I recently transitioned to an EM role so am observing a lot more peer-to-peer conversations rather than being directly part of them. I’m also getting the one-sided vent from my reports after certain meetings.
I really thought this was more of a Reddit thing but no it’s 100% all over the place in my industry and it’s really holding some of you back. If a person doesn’t understand X concept or hasn’t used Y tech or doesn’t know about Z feature, just fucking explain it. Don’t get exasperated. Don’t act frustrated. Just take the 15 seconds to explain it, it really really isn’t that hard.
I know of at least 2 IC’s at my company that are decent engineers and were only held back from promo because there was someone in the review board that discussed them being rude / disrespectful to people that asked questions / didn’t understand something.
Just be nice. Most of us are idiots so that probably includes you too.
I’m 46 years old with a background in mostly infra, could and event driven systems. So I’m good with Kafka, cloud computing, and infra stuff. I’ve also done control plane work at cloud providers. My career has usually been telecom and banking. I’ve worked with a few startups in the past.
I’ve had a rough past 3 years in my career. Lots of short term contracts that get randomly cancelled or not renewed. I’ve relocated 4 times in the past 5 years. Some relocations weren’t really necessarily mind you
I recently took a contract in NY at a bank.
Due to AI I pretty much have decided that a job can’t be my primary intellectual outlet. In the past I tried to take in challenging projects to learn and grow. That really helped me grows experience and knowledge. I decided to start working on a game project in my spare time. And it has given me a fantastic intellectual outlet. Now I can see the job as a job
With that said should I start trying to make the pivot into management? A lot of …
Hey all,
I have about 8YOE. I’ve been with 4 different start ups, I’ve more or less passed the first recruiter phase 95%+ more of the time since they were more of a vibe check and I’m a decent interviewee. This was about 4-6 years ago when I was on the market for my 2nd + 3rd job, so this was also when I had about 2-4 YOE.
I’ve been on the job market for past month or so as someone with 8YOE and I have a hard time passing even the first recruiter round, which is more or less a vibe check and non-technical. I’ve probably talked to 25 recruiters at this point and ~90% of them don’t go past the first round. Is this the new norm? It feels so weird that I’m now failing something that I used to excel at.
EDIT: bit more info about myself
8 YOE full-stack exp
Last job was a 4 year stint, tech stack was Python, React, Docker, AWS, OpenAI integration (very standard start-up tech stack in the bay area)
I was more or less a “vibe hire” …
Every job interview process I’ve been part of has 5-8 rounds, with each round ranging between half an hour to 2 hours. On average, every job interview process I get (well what few I get), takes on average 5 hours before I get rejected.
Most of the time, I fail the final round (or maybe I’m being led on even though I’ve failed an earlier round 😢 ).
I’ve run into a problem. I work at a place with unlimited PTO on paper, but every manager has been given the guidance that employees should be “put under heavy scrutiny” if they take PTO exceeding 20 work days a year (with it being heavily implied as putting you on PIP). I’ve already used 10 workdays for a family vacation (before I started decided I needed to leave), and have used 5 PTO days just on interviews. Note, my company makes you log PTO by the hour, so I don’t have to use an entire days worth of PTO on an interview. I’ve also used 3.5 PTO days worth of time on being sick. So …
Over the last 6 months, I spent between 30 and 70% of my time just doing AI cleanup. By which I mean refactoring and redesigning code that other people have generated using AI in the past. This includes a mix of new pull requests and existing code from previous months.
This is not voluntary work. I was specifically assigned to do code remediation because it was reaching the point where no one could understand what the code was doing without AI assistance.
I am not including the time I spend cleaning up new code that I personally created using AI. The reason for the range is that my role varies from week to week.
The reason I ask is that Brent Ozar, someone I generally respect, is claiming that AI code remediation is not going to be a long-term career path. My personal experience tells me he’s wrong, but I’m looking for a broader opinion.
My homelab has two disks. One with the OS and files, and the other as a backup. Every night, I run dd to copy everything to the second disk. The idea was simple: if one disk fails, I can just switch to the other one. I’ve managed to rescue my data several times this way.
But not today. If one disk gets corrupted and then dd copies that corrupted data to the other disk, well… now both disks are corrupted.
What I lost:
That’s pretty sad. Luckily, I have another backup for my holidays memories, and I have my homelab Git repo checked out on another device.
Still, I guess this is a good reminder that a copy isn’t necessarily a backup. If the backup gets overwritten every night, one bad night can overwrite the backup too.
I’ve recently moved all my devices to it, and added some friends/family to my network so they can play with some of my self hosted tools
Any horror stories I’ve missed? Am i blindly opening myself up to exploits? Are there better alternatives?
Seems too good to be true tbh
Here is my self-hosted setup; below is a list of the hardware and apps I use daily. Overall, my setup has been rock solid and runs like a well-oiled machine; it’s a very light touch, and I try to keep things simple.
Server, Proxmox VE:
VMs:
QNAP TS-435XeU, 1U, 4x 10TB Seagate, backup target only. Nothing runs on it. It presents a 20.7TB thin iSCSI LUN that PBS uses as its datastore, and PBS syncs from there out to B2.
Network:
Shodan, searched pve-api-daemon/3.0, got 170k matches, big chunks on:
- Hetzner
- OVH
- Linode
Many “just” the SPICE :3128 proxy,* but 30k just like that on :8006 too.
Is this normal? Expected? Why are people doing this?
* Thanks, u/firegore, for pointing out this is in fact Proxmox SPICE proxy:
Just remember that not every self hosted application has a team of experienced devs behind it ensuring security is adequate. It’s super cool to setup 15 different services/containers and configure them exactly how you want, until it comes time to maintain and update.
Every other day I see a new self hosted program that someone made in an afternoon. Usually, there’s absolutely zero security or failsafe built in if a bad actor were to target you. Also, you never know who’s an upcoming, eager developer, versus a seasoned red black-hat trying to sneak malware into your Docker stack.
There’s been countless CVEs that affect self hosted applications. And many more we haven’t discovered yet. Last week my buddy had to take his main machine offline because the application he was hosting was unknowingly working as a botnet.
You’d have to pay me a lot of money to get me to self host some shit Bob Smith vibe coded in his basement. Even if the author doesn’t have malicious intentions, you can’t …
This release brings a fundamental improvement to “Retry”: instead of re-downloading any files with missing data, only the articles that were actually missing are fetched again. RSS got an overhaul under the hood, the interface is refreshed, and we added quite a long list of of long-requested features and bugfixes.
Age rule to filter jobs based on their age.Cleanup List.Unwanted extensions will also be removed after unpacking.Extra queue columns..tar files during post-processing.Ninja Central is open for registration currently from August 11-16, if you have missed out on it before

I’ve been working on a homebrew payload that turns a jailbroken PS5 into a Usenet downloader. The idea is you skip the PC-download-then-transfer step entirely, the console grabs it directly.
This is a personal project and still rough around the edges, so I’d really appreciate testers to help find bugs. Obviously only relevant if you have a jailbroken PS5.

If you are based in the EU what’s the best second provider to get alongside Eweka? If I understand correctly there is no point in getting another omicron backbone provider?
Which second provider would you guys recommend?
Thanks a lot in advance
Sometimes I feel like I am in the minority of the Plex users in this group. I have been a lifetime Plex Pass holder for about 10 years, but I use Plex for myself and my immediate family members…. At home and when we travel. So many posts talk about people having large groups of users. I mean, I can read between the lines here, but I also have to read every post with a grain of salt to see if this is an average household plex user, or someone who regularly sees 10+ streams from their server.
UPDATE: I am not alone
Just posting in case someone else runs into this issue. TLDR: PlexMediaServer\AppData\tmp had over 22 TB of audio files generated by some Plex music-analysis-input that kept generating copies of 51GB folders that contained WAV files expanded from low res MP3s of a directory of podcasts.
I run a synology NAS with 51TB total volume size. It has been running for 5 years without any problems, and I have been running Plex server app on Synology without any problems. Pretty much always kept up to date with Plex Server app versions.
I recently started running short on space on the NAS, which I presumed was due to normal usage. I was literally about to buy new drives to increase available space but decided to see how prices change over the coming months when I noticed something odd about the folders. I wanted to see how much space I needed to backup my data before the rebuild, but total for all my media was only 23TB, but total array size was 51TB and Synology was telling me I only had 0.5% …
I dont even… man… they just absolutely butchered app for Firestick in the new update yesterday.
Shit is slow as hell. Shuffle Show only plays 1 episode then stops now. Transport controls fully just gone. I have no way to skip episodes (no that little down arrow under the timeline only brings up chapters and other episodes). Somehow I now have more things to click to get to where I want to go.
This is a absolutely busted.
Good job guys, going to find an alternative to plex now and never paying for plex pass again.
Basically title. I see it everywhere lately. What is wrong with the native Plex app and what does Plezy do that Plex native apps does not? I do not see it..? Perhaps I am blind.
I’ll admit just as I typed my title I realized I didn’t go on the server to check things but what update put plexs own stuff on the home screen and now I have to go dig to find my personal library?
I’m using firestick and onn. This happening to anyone else
