Came across the subreddit /singularity the other days and many commented that they had 20+ years of experience and hadn’t written one single line of code since 2025.
I feel living in a parallel universe, because at my work, no matter how we incorporate AI into our workflow (we literally tried every way people recommended), AI rarely produces the exact or the same quality of codes without decent amount of human developers’ intervention. And at the end of the day, the amount of time we spend reviewing the AI generated MR pretty much makes the velocity if not the same but slower.
That was why I felt utterly surprised to see so many people in the /singularity sub claiming they didn’t need to write codes no more. I wonder if they are just maintaining some existing systems. Ya, for sure AI can handle small changes especially in an existing system. In my opinion which is contrary to the general public believes, AI sucks at building a production grade brand new system, sure, it can build …
In my career I’ve noticed this from time to time and it’s become a pet peeve. Say you schedule an hour meeting with 6 people and the title of the meeting is “Onboarding project X on platform Y”. The meeting starts and one guy says “So how do we onboard project X on platform Y?” and the other people say “yes, that is what we are going to try to figure out in this meeting…”. And sometimes these people only ask questions in meetings and often they are very obvious questions that everyone already knows are important. Then that leaves the other people in the meeting to try to actually figure out the answers while the person who asked the question thinks they have contributed simply by asking the question.
Don’t get me wrong, it is sometimes very helpful to raise a question that perhaps the rest of the group has overlooked. But raising a question everyone is already aware of then acting as if you have made a valid contribution …
I like AI and use it daily so AI by itself isn’t a problem. But I feel like some colleagues use it in a weird/wrong way.
I have this one colleague who uses AI to its maximum capability, he is a frontend dev who writes the frontend to an application my team is building. Its all done by AI, and I don’t really care. He can do it in whatever way he want’s.
My problem with his AI usage is that he often makes requests through slack to my team. Either a bug or a feature request. But instead of writing it himself he asks AI to tell us what he want’s. And I don’t mean that he asks the AI to cleanup the language its entirely written by AI and I assume the bug/feature he is requesting is made found by the AI. Sometimes they make sense, but fairly often they don’t and we have to push back. And he inputs our response in to AI and asks AI to respond. I feel like this is sometimes outsourcing his thinking to both AI but also to my team who has to respond to some …
For those who have been in software development for 10-15 years and beyond, what do you think about your career prospects in this field in the long run? Do you see yourself staying in the field long term, or do you see yourself pivoting to a different career?
If you plan to stay, what keeps you motivated and excited about continuing your job in the field? Do you strive for specific titles/seniority, is it a bigger paycheck, or something completely different that keeps you going and excited?
I’ve been in this field for 10 years now, and in my close circle of friends who are also software developers, I see the tendency that people feel burnt out to the point where they don’t seem to care about career growth and consider switching to something completely new. I am no stranger to those feelings due to what’s been happening in the tech field over the past few years.
Would be curious to hear some thoughts from people who have been doing this for a while now.
At face value, it seems to me that other careers such as business analysts, consultants, doctors, lawyers and pilots value experience, contacts made over the years and resume built far more than software development since one’s newly learned skills quickly get devalued over time.
Now, on top of this, their also seems to be a quite layer of ageism in the industry where companies have a preference for younger engineers who are more willing to give out their hours than older engineers.
Any thoughts on this point of view of the industry? What is the best way to handle these issues in the case that they are true?
Is it worth the career path in the long run despite the ageism and an experience that doesn’t quite appreciate or compound in value over time? In fact, that “experience” also gets people stuck in fixed modes of thinking, and this is why continuously revitalizing the company’s talent pool with new talent becomes ever more important as the company grows. Another reason why there …
I’ve been slowly building out my homelab for a while now, and somewhere along the way the homepage turned into a project of its own.
What started as “I just want some bookmarks for my services” has become the main control panel for basically everything I host at home.
Behind it is a Proxmox-based setup running things like:
I wanted the dashboard to give me useful information at a glance instead of just being a wall of service icons, so I’ve been adding status information, resource usage, network stats, media activity, camera information, weather, shortcuts, etc.
A lot of the work was done together with AI because I’m definitely not a frontend developer. I mostly knew what I wanted it to look and behave like and kept iterating until it stopped looking like a generic dashboard.
And …
Most self-hosting security advice is just about the basics - don’t expose ports directly to the internet and use containers for basic isolation
Beyond that what level of security do you actually enforce? Do you monitor what your apps are doing in the background, like tracking outbound network traffic or checking file access on the host? When updating, do you just let it auto-pull or read the release notes for breaking changes or inspect source code and dependencies before updating?
Got this 32GB VRAM card (basically 2x WX7100 in one card) for 100 USD. Gigasteal. I want to be running local LLMs for the most part but i was wondering what else can i do with it? Do you have any other uses

I’ve always ran three but then again I’ve been doing this about a decade. Seems like things have been catching up where maybe we don’t have a big variance now. But I have lifetime Geek and Lifetime Planet. Slug has been doing well but I’ve had it as my highest priority. Am I missing anything if I don’t renew? Is there a third I should be asking?
I’ve checked the versions of both the server and Windows app, they are up-to-date…
All those “phishing attempts” are also “Accessed by: plex media server.exe”.
I’m a bit worried, since it seems that plex media server itself tries to contact those ip addresses. So it’s an outgoing connection, not incoming, as I understand it…
The “phishing attempts” started about 24 hours ago. My server is not set to port :80. The antivirus is BitDefender free.
Should be worried?
Edit: some ip addresses from the these BitDefender logs, basically the same thing “Accessed by: plex media server.exe”: 102.220.160.39:80 , 102.220.160.124:80/ ,130.12.181.21:80
Edit2: I found this in the logs (not sure what it means, though):
Sep 03, 2026 22:22:31.000 [72196] DEBUG - Request: [130.12.182.225:34210 (WAN)] SSH-2.0-libssh_0.12.0 (3 live) #e0ba Signed-in

Anyone else having weird issue with their Plex?
My library says Not authorized.
or at some point the webpage was not even loading with a message unable to reach plex.tv?
A quick follow-up to today’s release, mostly to fix a background that wasn’t behaving.
Desktop is 4.50.4; mobile testers get these as 4.50.3, so the build reaches you without another review round.
