I finally had a breakthrough today. I think. I (20 YoE) have been struggling in my role at a startup as someone who wears many hats from SA to ML eng to product eng to data eng, etc etc as I watch the amount of tech debt and security concerns (or lack of concern) accelerate in my young org. The drivers are mainly vibe-coding non-engineers and actual engineers that have kind of thrown in the towel on any logical design or planning of the system/software.
It kind of all culminated around a more mid-level engineer telling me “I gave up with everyone sending me AI summaries in Slack and tickets. I just feed it right back into Claude Code and let it do the thing.” I find those giant text walls unreadable myself and his mentality of “slop in, slop out” isn’t exactly unreasonable. We’ve hired a lot of people over the last 8 years. Our interview process works okay, but it’s far from perfect, one of our best hire we’ve ever had didn’t do amazing on our interviews but has really shined through later on.
Looking back at the people who turned out to be genuinely great hires, I’ve started noticing a couple of recurring traits:
* Low ego, but confident, they are happy to flag problems or suggest improvements on their own, and didn’t get defensive when challenged.
* Fast self-learners, could pick up new things without much hand holding.
Curious what others have found. What have you been able to correlate with your best hires, and just as interesting, did any of it surprise you / contradict what your interview process actually screens for? Or do you have any questions that you ask for now after making a few regretful hires?
I’m a principal engineer and I’ve worked a long time in IT.
I’ve seen a lot of posts lately about the impacts and use of certain tooling, career anxiety, and whether or not they still matter.
I just wanted to say: you do!
Whether you’re new to IT or have been here a long time, use certain tools or don’t, at the end of the day you’re the person solving the complex tasks.
Your work still matters and so do you.
Don’t lose sight of that.

I’ve been in software engineering for 15 years, and one thing I’ve noticed is that earlier we’d build a system, take it to production, and it would run for years with small enhancements and maintenance.
Now it feels like every few years there’s a push to rewrite everything with a new tech stack, often because the existing system is considered “outdated” or “not sustainable.”
Have you noticed a similar shift in software, or is this just my perception? Are frequent rewrites driven by real business needs, or are we too quick to replace systems instead of evolving them?
I’m not american, so I can’t test them. In the age of LLMs, every week we hear that we’re all gonna be out of jobs by next week. Vibecoders get, of course, more insufferable, claiming that software engineering is gone.
Are the models really that good? Do you guys see an actual “replacement” coming? More job losses? Are they actually a good tool or is it all just smoke and mirrors to raise more money? Are they economically sustainable?
For me personally, they have been useful, but my company pays a shitload in tokens, I made some rough calculations and economically, they’re still too expensive to be more than a really expensive tool.

Found this news interesting, confirming what most of us here already realized: creating a self-hosted server out of used phones is an incredibly cost-efficient solution, especially with today’s storage and memory costs.
They’re essentially stripping out the motherboard from the phones, installing a Linux distro that doesn’t contain all the consumer device protections like a low-memory killer daemon, and finally organized together in 25-50 device clusters

I finally decided to get a home server a while ago. I’ve built my own PCs since I was a kid, my first was an AMD K6-2 at 400 MHz with an NVIDIA Riva TNT2 Pro. So I did what I always do: hand-picked the components for a box to host and back up our photos and videos. In November that build was €800. By December the same parts were €1,200. (The same setup is now €1800) for 16GB of RAM and no GPU. I hesitated. And the part that really bugged me: I’m a software engineer, and I wanted to be able to run local LLMs. And that build couldn’t do it.
I used to laugh at Apple fanboys back when they soldered Intel chips.
Fast forward to March ‘26: I bought a used Mac Studio M1 Max (64GB, 4TB) for €1,700 and made it the home server instead.
Then I plugged in a wattmeter and left it running for 16 days. Literally could not believe the numbers first and had to double check. It showed 8 watts during “idle” (No inference running)!

My network diagram used to go stale the second I changed anything, so I made it a build artifact instead of a drawing.
It’s a .d2 text file (D2, diagram-as-code) in my repo. A GitHub Actions workflow watches that file, renders it with the ELK layout engine to SVG, rasterizes that to PNG, and commits the result back. The image in my README can’t drift from the source anymore. I add a node or a service, edit a few lines of text, and the diagram redraws itself on the next push.
The icons are the bit I like most. Proxmox, Talos, ArgoCD, Cilium, Falco and the rest aren’t stored in the repo at all. They get pulled from public icon repos at render time and inlined into the SVG, so the output is self-contained and I never touch an image file. For a long time, I have been using the awesome-selfhosted Github repo to browse/shop for stuff I could selfhost on my stuff. But with the influx of one-shot slopware, I am looking for a place where I can find a good list of selfhosted things. :)

Idk if other platforms have had this update already but I have all FireTVs in my home. I just turned on my TV this evening, like I always do, and BAM. My TV app looks completely identical to the ugly mobile app. AND ITS SUPER BUGGY AND SLOW and unresponsive. Like such a mess it belongs still in Beta. Why was this rolled out???? I actually liked the old Plex UI. This is terribly not functional. It looks like they just wanna copy Netflix with this UI. Anyone else been having issues with this new update?
Jeez, they even removed all the player controls. What a mess. I tolerated it on mobile but TV too???
UPDATE: I just side loaded the older version of Plex. I feel so much better now, it’s great to be home.
To all the people saying “You’ll get used to it”, sure I would if it actually worked. The update is cool looking but completely unusable to me right now. I’m not dealing with that. I built my server for a better streaming experience, not bs.

I’m doing some deep cleaning at home and I found one old box of VHS tapes from the mid to late 90’s. As a teenager I used to record shows. I’m sure that a lot of these are even commercial free. I used to stop recording at commercial breaks and start back up again when it came back on. I would like to see some of those old commercials though. I am sure I have more boxes too. I just need to find them.

So I’m wondering when did your obsession with saving media start? How many of you also used to do this, if you’re my age or older. I was there for the start of Napster which changed everything. I was also one of the first Netflix customers with the 8 DVD at a time subscription. I also have books filled with DVD’s ripped from that Netflix subscription. I’m at my folks visiting and they have a new cable modem and router from their provider. So I see the Plex app in the UI and get logged in. I connect as my mom and start to get her home screen set with favorites and everything, and my server isn’t showing. Ok, I switch users and it’s the same for me. Hmm, maybe my server is down or something, but everything is working fine on my phone.
It turns out that Spectrum Xumo has basically nerfed the Plex app and does not allow personal streaming servers. I guess they think that their services should be enough, why would anyone ever want anything else. #%$#@@%\^
And my folks are old enough to not want to switch back and forth, they’re OK ditching my stream because the cable company has stuff…
So question, is there a way to get the Plex app unlocked?
I’m trying to decide whether it still makes sense in 2026 to build a Plex-based library by ripping discs, or whether I should shift toward buying digital movies through Apple instead. My main draw to Plex is local ownership and potentially higher quality from UHD Blu-ray sources, but I’m increasingly concerned about the long-term practicality of the ripping ecosystem itself. UHD Blu-ray drives seem to be getting harder to find and more expensive, and it feels like the hardware/software stack for ripping is becoming more niche over time.
At the same time, my actual use case is mostly convenience-driven—rewatching TV shows and movies in bed or on different devices, not necessarily building a massive archive. So I’m trying to understand whether Plex still makes sense as a system to invest in today if the initial ripping phase is increasingly constrained by hardware availability.
