This is where I find myself. Five years of experience working as an ML Engineer at a non-tech fortune 500. I’m barely working. Maybe 20 hours a week. My whole team barely works. Nobody seems to really care. The company is in good financial health but our work isn’t really core to the business.
I go back and forth. On one hand, being remote with a low workload and low stress is great. I enjoy being able to spend time with my dog, cook up lunches, go to the gym, etc. But it also feels incredibly precarious. I’m not learning anything and I feel that on any given day I’ll wake up to that vague calendar invite with HR.
Just wondering if anyone else is in this position, or has been for a while? Trying to make sense of how grateful I feel to be in a role like this but also how shaky it feels at the same time.
Edit: interesting 50⁄50 split of responses lol
For a long time, standard advice to mid career people who were burned out , wanted to downshift or create more time for their family was go to a big, boring non tech enterprise and take a pay cut if necessary.
Now it seems like those jobs barely exist and are just as competitive as anything else. I’ve bern desperately trying to get into a lower stress, conventional industry like regional banking, insurance, health. But it just doesn’t seem like a viable path anymore
Feels like AI has been especially taxing on the mental states of developers and the outlook of this industry in general (understandably so). Would anyone else be interested in a weekly thread to share your “wins” or other good things as a brief reprieve?
Just as the title says, I am dying to know if anyone is still even doing this? And if yes, what does that look like now?
I’ve not heard of anyone in my network mention it for a tonne while
I think I’m going crazy, I’m the only person in engineering at this company who has a problem with deploying code where nobody on the team understands how it works?
People are pushing 5000+ line pull requests to the system I initially scaffolded which go to me as the reviewer - but if I take any reasonable amount of time to review I get told I’m slowing the team down and we have to go faster. So then we ship it and nobody understands how it works, not me, not the person who wrote it. I guess we can “ask claude” how the system works but surely that will at some level of complexity stop giving us useful results?
Installed it on a new PC and was met with this screen.
Upon some investigation figured out that they now basically push users into purchasing a paid driver to use gamepads (do you really believe they will continue to support free fallback forever?) and suggest purchasing it for keyboard and mouse too, which suggests that eventually free mouse/keyboard support will also be dropped/degraded to less useable state.
Issues are already being marked as resolved by redirecting “fixes” into paid version (example) even though FREE fix for it is possible and already exists in other fork. Expecting that eventually any issues will be redirected there while free version will keep getting shittier and shittier.
Upon further investigation, of course, I figured out that they employ typical predatory model “buying isn’t owning”. Even though you …
Been using the 4800+ for two months and I absolutely love it. The reason I got into self-hosting is mainly the streaming services and unavailability of TV series on many of them. Particularly with a VPN (ProtonVPN), since they identify and block your connection, it’s a cat and mouse game. The solution was to get a NAS. I was torn between Ugreen and Terramaster, and ended up with Ugreen.
My specs:
These are the apps I’m currently self-hosting and enjoying so far. Just wanted to share the love here.
> Mullenweg is the founder of Automattic, the company that owns WordPress, Tumblr, Pocket Casts, and a host of other popular internet brands and pieces of software. Mullenweg has faced several controversies over his management of the company in recent years.
> On a company-wide Slack this morning, Automattic CEO Matt Mullenweg announced he has been put on a paid leave of absence. […] He continued, writing that Mark Davies, current Automattic Chief Financial Officer, has “conspired” with Automattic Board of Directors members Ann Dunwoody, Toni Schneider, and Sue Decker “behind my back and they voted to put me on a paid leave of absence. I voted against that.”
Just a quick reminder since I imagine tons of people are still using the service
File Browser is archived on 2026-09-01. The last planned release has already shipped. There will be no further releases, bug fixes, or security fixes.
SABnzbd 5.1.1, 5.1.2 and 5.1.3 resolve a number of security vulnerabilities.
Over the past releases, several security researchers have put a lot of time and effort examining SABnzbd, responsibly reporting their findings, and helping us verify the fixes. We are grateful for their hard work, it has made SABnzbd meaningfully safer for everyone.
For most users the risk is limited: you are only affected if your setup is exposed to
untrusted parties. The web interface issues only apply if it can be reached by someone
you do not trust. By default, SABnzbd is only accessible from your own device and
External internet access is set to No access. If either of those is still at its
default, or if you use a proxy service for authentication, you are not affected.
The download-processing issues only apply if SABnzbd handles NZBs from a source you
do not fully trust, such as a public indexer.
If none of that describes your setup, you were never at …
If you’re still running an older version of NZBGet, it’s probably worth updating. Some indexers, like Treasure Maps, are starting to drop support for older versions of certain apps, including older NZBGet builds. Updating can help avoid compatibility issues down the line. Recent NZBGet releases include:
If you’re still using NZBGet 21.1 and aren’t sure how to update, this guide is for you Migration from NZBGet 21.1
Each new release includes work to make NZBGet faster, more reliable and more stable, while still adding new features. If you’ve been putting off an update, now is a great time to do it! Happy downloading 🚀
I spent the last year gathering as much Usenet text data as possible from a large variety of resources and including from about 7000 live active servers as well to fill in gaps.
The end result is a searchable/filterable dataset acessible via web+api (free and paid options)
API : https://www.usenet-rewind.com/api-docs
Web: https://www.usenet-rewind.com
Binaries have been filtered out and range is from posts from 1981-Current and constantly populating. the site includes a histogram of distribution of message counts per year.
I welcome feedback or possible use cases. Built on Apache Solr 10, Mariadb 12 (rocksdb) and NVME disk hardware for fastest operation.

Encase anyone was confused over just how heavily dependent nzbfast development/“developer” is on AI.
While clear they are using AI in Issue responses.
This makes it pretty clear, the “dev” doesn’t even review the comments on issue before copy pasting AI responses.
Or even if they did, how little they care to do ANY basic legwork, that literally anyone can do.
From https://github.com/nzbfast/nzbfast/issues/79
See the last paragraph.
Bet none of the AI coding is checked or reviewed either.
I don’t want to break any rules. I just want to understand why Rule 11 causes harm? I’m fairly new to usenet and have recently gotten all of my providers/indexers in a spot where I’m extremely happy with everything. I’m just curious about the harm or potential harm that the items listed in Rule 11 cause?
If not here, is there a place I can learn more about why Rule 11 exists?
Sorry for my if ignorance.
This new interface is the worst. There are so many bugs, specifically with selecting subtitles. Also it’s extremely unclear how the recommend and browse works. I often feel like I get locked into a specific view and it takes me WAY too long to figure out how to get to the place I want to be. Do better.

just tried if my xbox series x can play AV1 videos, of course the native apps like plex and official media players work at all with AV1.
but after trying it with kodi and a plex addon I was able to play 4K AV1 video with dolby vision too! and it runs flawlessly, no lag, stutter or buffering!
I am not waiting for permission. I will allow myself to say it.
There is nothing I like anymore about the new Plex FireTV interface. It now takes more clicks to do the same things as previous versions. In fact, I hate it so much I am now using Plezy.
