So last week I was tinkering with how to change up our technical interview round. For the last few years we’ve been doing a small take home followed by a live coding session where we add a new requirement, minimal AI assistance allowed. However, in our company pretty much everyone is writing 100% of code using Claude now, so although we did used to get good signal from that test, it no longer feels representative of the day to day job developers are doing.
I designed a new assessment which I casually showed to my manager and then suddenly got asked to run it with 3 candidates this week. The scenario is they have to review an agent generated PR that has been flagged as high risk due to it changing critical business logic, and there are bugs in there for them to catch at various levels of severity. We then look at how they drive the fixes and what their workflow is like.
These particular roles we’re currently hiring for are billed as “AI Engineer”. There is something weird going on in …
“Hey look Claude/Codex can now generate my entire feature in 30 mins which could have taken me 2 weeks to refactor” or “The new Opus 5.5 model is amazing, it solved the bug which GPT astra was stuck at for weeks and couldn’t solve it”. Like seriously?
How can software engineers who are supposed to be “smart” and “logical” be this stupid to not connect the dots and see writing on the wall for the future. Or do they think they are invincible and layoffs won’t affect them?
The stability of software engineering jobs in the next 2-5 years looks very shaky, let alone long term and many devs are already looking to get dual income streams. This doesn’t seem like a viable career path with how things are going and I am not even sure whether this career would stick by me till my retirement and I already have 15+ years of experience.
I already am seeing significant shift/reduction in hiring. Even in my current role, despite no …
I see a lot of common negative themes in our daily AI circle jerks here on this subreddit: Huge unreviewable PRs, code quality declining, technical debt spiking, unwarranted contributors, lazy developers putting in no effort, etc… etc…
As someone who has hung out on this subreddit the last 5 years and been in the industry for 10, a lot of these problems are the same old problems that have always been prevalent in our industry, just at a smaller scale; but with AI so many of these problems are exacerbated by the fact that anyone can just rip on code nowadays, even the non-technical folks and the bad engineers.
To be clear I think there are very valid complaints around AI, like coming to terms with the loss of our craft, or the fact that our jobs are now agent managers, but there are an equal number of complaints that aren’t hitting the root cause of why those problems exist at their company.
Huge unreviewable PRs, Technical debt, Lazy engineering: You have an …
Not sure if this is the right sub, but I started a company with a friend. He previously worked at a Mag 7 company and pitched me an unrefined business idea. I liked the concept, helped refine it, and came up with most of the actual product flow.
His background is in data analytics, so he’s been pushing for a data-collection feature that I personally disagreed with, but he believes will be valuable long term. I trusted him, he’s worked at mag7. I work as a senior dev at a start up company and I’ve designed and built the MVP of this product.
We had our first conversation about compensation/equity, and he proposed 5% equity for me. He said he’s open to negotiating, but his reasoning was that he’s taking a big risk if I deploy the app and then go MIA.
The 5% caught me completely off guard. So far, his contributions have mainly been coming up with the original unrefined idea, setting up meetings, forming the LLC, coming up with the name/logo, and helping shape the business direction. He’s …
SWE for 20 years. I’ve seen plenty of posts about the soul-sucking prompt engineering some companies mandate now. Mine isn’t one of those - AIs are a tool you are encouraged to use, but the output has to be understandable, human-reviewable, and you (as a dev) are still responsible for it and the consequences.
I think the difference is whether you give your codebase completely to the AI. If you treat the code the same way we treat assembler now, then that’s what you do - you specify the what, and the AI completely handles the how, which leads to 5000-line pull requests, only reviewed by other AIs, and all that jazz. The problem comes when the AI can’t do something, or you encounter a problem that a human needs to solve. Then you’re faced with working out WTF a 1-million line codebase is actually doing from scratch, that wasn’t even written by a human, probably with CxOs breathing down your neck. Good luck with that.
This decision assumes that AIs …
If the price of memory doesn’t get you, these surely will (the conversion is roughly $3 a pop). Believe it or not, nobody with me understood my excitement, so I’m sharing here. (Not offering to buy or sell)
UPDATE: Went back by while passing through MRT. There is a really good location with three completely different server options (Cisco, Furukawa, Lenovo, Seiko etc.)
Location: 107 in Taipei City Mall
Adding storefront photo to comments.
Api first and now also rss.
It’s only getting worse.
Reddit recommends “Discord Relay”.
Maybe we can use it to at least mirror the posts away from reddit?
I got this e-mail from my self-hosted Nextcloud server. This happened because I had a local device that was sending an expired App password repeatedly, which made Nextcloud suspect the localhost itself. Just sharing it for giggles!
I’m very big into local control and being able to host things myself. I’ve been one of the co-maintainers of python-roborock for a few years and I have had this goal for years to get my robot vacuums off of the cloud and running completely locally as I am not a fan of a device with a camera, microphone, and detailed map of my house storing data on a company’s cloud.
I won’t bore everyone with the details of how I got it working (if you want to see you can read the full technical write up), but essentially I use a few exploits during onboardings to route the vacuum to a custom URL. Then I recreated Roborock’s backend stack (MQTT and REST) so that the vacuum could communicate completely with the server. I’ve since blocked my vacuum from accessing the internet and everything has been working great for me.
The server runs in docker or as a Home Assistant addon or can be built from source.
AI Disclosure: AI was used to assist me in the reverse …
Hi all,
Developer of Apprise here.
After quite a bit of work, Apprise v2.0 and Apprise API v2.0 are finally out.
For anyone unfamiliar with Apprise, it acts as a notification hub. Or a glorified switchboard. Your applications, scripts, containers, cron jobs, monitoring tools, Home Assistant instance, etc. send a notification to Apprise, and it handles delivering it to Discord, Telegram, Slack, Matrix, Gotify, email, SMS providers and more. The graphic i created in this post can illustrate the flow better.
There are now 160 supported notification services, all using the same general configuration approach.
You can use Apprise directly from the CLI, embed the Python library into an application, or run Apprise API and centralize your notification configuration on a self-hosted server. Over the years, I got to watch a lot of systems adapt this and it’s been cool to see!
The API approach is particularly useful if you have a bunch of applications sending notifications. Instead of …
Hi all, I’ve published a comparison of real-world Usenet binary article availability, rather than relying only on advertised retention claims.
As u/swintec already spoiled in this thread, I’ve been working on these tests for a while. Huge thanks to him and everyone else who helped and supported me along the way - I’ve been trying to make this happen for years, and it’s finally a reality.
TL;DR
I tested about 78,000 real NZBs across 10 providers, sampling up to 100 …
I know, everyone is exhausted right now by the glut of new apps (myself included). I fully expect the hate wave, however i’m very proud of Weaver and want to share it with the community. I hope some of you find it interesting at least. I’ve been actively developing Weaver for 6 months, but this project really started for me nearly 6 years ago (more later on).
Weaver is an open-source, transparent, self-hosted Usenet downloader that runs on any x86 or arm 64-bit system. It has all the standard features you’d expect from a tool like Sabnzbd, with some interesting additions.
Weaver is incredibly fast at downloading, fully leveraging the native code capabilities of Rust. Beyond raw speed, Weaver uses far less CPU than the other tools (benchmarks), so even if you’re Sab is already maxing your WAN, why waste all that CPU time?
How is Weaver so fast and efficient?
According to my profile, apparently I’ve been a paid subscriber to nzb.life (and previously .su) since mid 2012, so for 14 years!
I’ve just received a warning from them (my first ever from any indexer, or any service actually), claiming api sharing, even though I am the only person using it. I have to say I’m pretty disappointed.
I’ve had a Raspberry Pi4 with the *arr stack connected to usenet for a few years. About 6 months ago, I subscribed to a seedbox to add torrent capabilities and the seedbox also has 6TB of storage and Plex streaming capabilities. It is on a very fast backbone and was so good that I started running some usenet downloads on it too (via prowlarr, sonarr, radarr). It’s great.
So, I now have the option to use my home Pi4 (which is running low on storage) or my hosted Seedbox and the *arr suite is set up on both.
Accoring to Prowlarr, I’ve only had a handful of grabs from NZB Life across both instances over the past 6 months (I …
Deciding on on picking up three of the following indexers based on the BF pricing.
Currently, leaning towards: life > slug = finder > hub > geek
Life only due to availability and no BF pricing.
Curious on your thoughts!
I used the search but couldn’t find current answers to these questions:
- do new accounts really get disabled after 14 days? can we purchase a sub after 14 days?
- if I have 1y sub can I stack it with a BF deal (eg. lifetime or something else)?
thanks.
Since the latest update, the quality of my direct play content looks horrible. Like absolute garbage. No issues what so ever with the old app.
I’ve attached photos of my experience. One is the Apple TV 4K and the other one is my phone. Both show as direct play in the Plex interface.
How do I solve this?
I’m finally watching a movie on the new Apple TV update, and am surprised at how much they changed the player interface. It used to be that we could swipe down to see tech specs, audio, and subtitle options; quickly accessible and easy to see.
Now, it’s in the gear settings on the side and the navigation seems a little stickier/more sluggish than it used to.
But what I really miss is being able to tap one on the remote to bring up the progress bar to see how far I was into a movie and tapping it a second time would show the current time and also the time at which the movie would end. It was such an ingenious idea that I was always surprised that it’s not universal on all Apple TV apps.
It’s gone now and I have no idea why. I’m hoping it will come back after we—the users—are finished “beta testing.”
On a positive note, Dolby Vision seems to be working better than it used to.
Used the new ui tonight for the first time. Stunned by all the intentionally lost functionality.
I see lots of posts about the new bugs. I see the stuttering and some other issues. But what really disturbs me is all the features that seem to be removed.
You can no longer unpin the Plex content such as live TV, Recommended, Plex TV etc. They saw people online explaining how to remove these options from the main menu. Instead of asking why people dont want their content upfront they permapinned them.
i could’ve been ok with the UI changes but the lost library features are too much. There was all kinds of filtering and browsing features that are just gone. No more filters by director, actor, year, none of that. Thats usually where we start looking for a nights entertainment.
They deleted the button for previews. Super lame. Whats that movie? My wife likes to ask. And I could show her a preview. I often forget myself.
Combining the the filters and the previews …
I never, ever want to watch anything anywhere but from my own server. Yet all the time I go to watch something and have to pick “Where to watch” and pick my server, even though there’s no other options to chose from.
Is there a way to make this go away once & for all?
If my server is the only place that has the thing I want to watch, that is the point of “Where to watch”?
