I have realised that I don’t really connect them on a personal level and I don’t like working with them much.
Not because of toxicity (Never had a truly toxic coworker or employer yet) but because of the following personality and cultural characteristics

There is a lot of bro culture about programming and insecurities that manifest by trying to look smart all the time.
Also a lot of technical talk ²⁴⁄₇ which usually is in the form of bike shedding.

They are usually very skilled on the details and bureaucracy but not as much on the big picture and they do have huge problems in communication.

I started this careers dreaming of working for “builders” of the late 2000s - early 2010s eras.

Started a new job this week and I learned developers have no local admin access. Every single thing has to be requested, and it’s slowing me down considerably. Onboarding is already a huge PITA and the cherry on top is needing to create a ticket for every little thing I need.

It took 2 days to get Homebrew installed on my Macbook, but come to find out I have to raise a ticket to install any package. Every ticket goes to India and they remote in and install with admin access. And I have not even scratched the surface for things I need installed. Every standup update this week was “waiting for IT ticket to be resolved” and at first I was thinking it was just me until a few people on my team told me they were not up and running for nearly 3 weeks when they started. What the hell!

In my 8 YOE I’ve never worked for a company like this. It’s insanely frustrating. How is this a reasonable process for developers? Is this what bigger companies are like now?

Present-day models tend to produce code that is too defensive, too complex, too local in its reasoning. They avoid strong invariants. They add fallbacks instead of making bad states impossible. What I mean by the title is that I feel like the teams in my company are in a huge anti-pattern where the majority of the building is done (badly) by AI, then everyone scrabbles around manually reviewing and fixing the shit it’s spewed out. It’s like putting bread in a toaster that always burns it, and sitting with your knife ready to scrape it.

Is this just my company? Is this really the best way to work and I’ve just lost the plot?

I’ve been thinking about it a lot, how would we get out of this scenario?

I’m wondering if the token price hikes are actually a good thing, if limited tokens will force people to think about what to use them for. If we had a strict budget, would we realise we’d prefer the AI writing tests and doing code reviews to it writing the code?

LinkedIn seems to believe that burnt toast is all we need and we should stop bothering to scrape (aka loop engineering).

I’m seeing a pattern in my organisation.

Junior developers are becoming Mid-level developers, and Mid-level developers are becoming Seniors. But once you reach Senior Engineer, career progression seems to slow down dramatically.

There are plenty of Junior and Mid-level positions, fewer Senior roles, and only a small number of Principal, Staff, or Distinguished Engineer positions. Companies seem comfortable promoting Juniors to Mid and Mid to Senior, but promotions beyond Senior are much rarer.

Is anyone else seeing the same thing in their organisation? Has the Senior level become a bottleneck?

I host a public qBittorrent instance for my small group of friends. This has been fine for at least a year.
For some reasons, I noticed my server has becoming slow.
After checking, I found a program named `tcrond` running a cryptomining.

Apparently qBittorent could execute command, which I only learned about it today.

If you have unprotected apps, this is a reminder for you.
protect you apps, unless you are 100% they can’t do anything dangerous.

Lucky me I am running it inside docker. This could be worst.

I have been building out a self hosted stack for each media type in my homelab to escape subscriptions and cut costs down to $0. Movies and shows, covered by Jellyfin + arr stack. Books/audiobooks covered by calibre + arr, and even adult content covered by Stash + my own automated built system.

What I haven’t been able to figure out yet is replacing YouTube Premium, which keeps increasing in cost for little to no value. I use both YouTube Music and YouTube daily for watching YouTube and listening to music, and I have been doing this for years upon years. I used to be able to say the price was worth it , but now that I have managed to cut all other subscriptions out, this is pretty much the last one left.

What am I asking is, do you any of you know a good way to replace Youtube premium with a YouTube/YTM with no ads and similar features to premium at no cost? From what I understand self hosting music can be difficult and I by no means listen to mainstream music, but Im not sure …

Going to rant. Over a year without an update. I don’t care about the new ui as anything is better than infuse. Old UI/new UI, don’t care just want a working app. Can’t watch half my 4k rips because they just stutter constantly. And before the ten people come in here saying oh it’s you mInE wOrKs, check your transcoding, or your server sucks. It’s not that. It’s 100% an app issue, hundreds of posts about it. It’s inexcusable to have a platform as big as Apple TV not have a working app and especially for over a year. My shield works flawlessly, infuse on Apple TV flawlessly. It’s the plex app, how it processes, and how it throttles. I’ve seen the stories that they had one developer for tvOS and he left. Ok but it’s been over a year??? We get people every other week building their own clients from scratch that work better than the native app. I don’t know why we’re acting like there was only one guy in the world who can code for tvOS.
