Context: I was just reading through this post written by a redditor who’s been working on a particular task at their job for over a month, a task which was “supposed” to take 1.5 weeks, and everyone in the top comment was dogpiling on her and downvoting her, saying she’s broken her manager’s trust, etc.
First of all, Jesus you people, I thought this sub was supposed to be on the workers’ side, or at least, helping to support one another. Secondly, I just left a job that had this exact kind of mentality and team dynamic and let me tell you, it is not fun, it is not sustainable, and I don’t think I was any more productive at that job than I was at previous jobs where they gave me:
THAT’S trust. Not this bullshit about …
Company I work at is looking to manage costs, presumably for a sale. Hey, that makes sense.. but don’t be penny wise\pound foolish.
One of the ways they’re attempting to do this is by having everyone log time. It all started innocently enough: “Have everyone log time to compare estimates to reality”. I manage a dev team and can get behind that.. so away we went. A few months go by and sure enough, not a single conversation is had about estimation, but upper management sure is concerned at how people aren’t logging 40 hours a week. I inform them that things like “meetings”, “bathroom breaks” and “switching costs” all add up.. but that’s nonsense of course.
Over the next several weeks we’re encouraged to ensure our team is logging admin time as well.. fine.. I mean it’s not how any of the top organizations manage their teams.. but lets go. Oh, what’s that? You didn’t receive any …
I’m in the middle of hiring 9 full-time senior React devs (no contractors) for a greenfield project, and wow… it’s been rough.
Everyone online says the job market is dead, nobody’s hiring, interviews are brutal with leetcode/live coding/homework assignments.
But our process is actually super straightforward: Process: HR chat 1 technical interview Offer if it’s a fit
No leetcode, no whiteboarding, no “reverse a linked list.”
How my technical interview goes
I don’t quiz people on the virtual DOM or ask them to re-implement useState. Instead, I try to talk through their experience: Biggest challenges they’ve faced How they solved them What they’d do differently What they’d improve in hindsight
Then I pivot to topics we actually care about in the project: Accessibility → most people stop at “add an alt tag.” Performance → 90% only know useCallback, useMemo, maybe Suspense. CSS variables → some act like they don’t even exist. Architecture/microfrontends → apparently putting files in a …
I feel like as of 2021 ish it’s no longer about the cafeteria or gym etc on a campus. Now the top perks are remote work, 4 day work week, and “F-U pay me”. Maybe throw maternity & paternity leave / general healthcare plans in there too. Stuff that used to be more table stakes but are now magnified. We all know “unlimited” PTO rarely actually is.
But all the former office perks - massage chairs, food, dry cleaning services, etc - are done compared to wfh.
I dunno what do you guys think / look for these days?
I don’t quite know how to respond to this person.
So I have a guy on my team who I mention basic things in a code review and he responds positively with things like “good idea”. Or “yeah that cleans things up a lot”. Or “That should make this easier”. So you’re thinking “what the issue here” right?
Well things things aren’t just good ideas, it’s like the base level of code quality. For example: If you have a 1:1 relationship in the database it’s _incorrect_ to leave off the unique constraint on the foreign key. If you have a function that’s 350 lines long and deeply indented, it’s _incorrect_ and needs to be broken up. If you’ve named your variables in a way that is inconsistent with our conventions, then it’s _incorrect_. (Disclaimer: none of these are absolutes, there can be a good reason to break any rule, but in these code reviews at least, there was not a good reason)

Hey everyone,
Just sharing my first ever take at a home server. I got a Dell Optiplex 7040 with an Intel i5-7400T 4 Cores and 16GB RAM, with 256 GB NVMe for boot and 1 TB HDD for storage, for cheap. Running all of this on there, with Cloudflare SSL Certificates for Local and Cloud Exposed services, via Nginx Proxy Manager.
Ubuntu Server as the OS. Ad blocked my entire network with AdBlock. Media Setup with the ARR stack and Jellyfin. CouchDB for Obsidian self hosted LiveSync. Have some RSS Feeds for things I usually look out for. Grafana for monitoring, and embeds in the dashboard. Homarr for the dashboard. Docker, for all services.
Surprisingly the media consumption experience is not bad, especially for a Intel iGPU with QuickSync.
I’m a developer, so I have a few databases hosted as well (DBGate as the viewer) for personal projects and quick testing
Local services that need to be accessed remotely can be done so with Tailscale.
Overall super happy with the result, and an …
I decided to upgrade my databases to Postgres 18 because why not. Since my databases were small, I just did a docker exec db pg_dump > ~/backup.sql
instead of using the dedicated upgrade tools. I changed the image from postgres:17-alpine
to postgres:18-alpine
, deleted the existing volume since it won’t be compatible, and then started a pull.
It succeeded and I restored the backup again. I noticed however after doing docker volume ls
that I have anonymous volumes linked to the Postgres container.
It turns out the mount has moved. Instead of /var/lib/postgresql/data
, you need to mount now to /var/lib/postgresql
.
Oh well. Sources:
My Portainer container has been running since the birth of Christ. Truly a long-term support release.
Forget 99.999% uptime — this thing survived:
At this point, I think I should start a new religion.
Behold: The Messiah of Containers. 🙏🐳
Hello Everyone! I’d like to announce Wizarr 2025.10.0. If you haven’t updated in a while, now is the time to do so! I’ve overhauled the Invite Screen and Wizard for new users.
Ok, but I haven’t heard of Wizarr?
Wizarr is a advanced User Management and Invitation Platform for Plex, Jellyfin, Emby, AudiobookShelf, Kavita, Romm, Komga…. It enables you to invite users in a seamless way by simply sending them an invitation link. It will then guide them through a customisable Wizard, explaining what Plex/Jellyfin/Etc is what it does, how it works etc! Wizarr supports multiple servers and invitations can sign people up to multiple servers at once!
Wizarr also allows you to manage permissions and users across servers.
I already have 16 Arrs, why do I need an app to invite one of my 3 users?
Overengineering solutions is in the essence of selfhosting and homelabbing! We like things to feel professional and integrated, and that’s exactly …
Discontinuation of the NetNews / Usenet service as of 30 September 2027
Access to the news server News.Individual.NET will not be possible beyond this date. Effective immediately, we will no longer accept new registrations for our service News.Individual.NET.
Sorry to see them go
Edit: It was an ISP issue, not Usenet!
I have a bit of a strange one..
I have Ninja and Viper setup via my download client, and a GB connection. Everything was working fine, getting up to around 100MB/s across the 2 providers combined.
Suddenly 2 nights ago, my speed seems to be limited to 10.8MB/s. This is either combined across both providers, or singularly if I disable one.
I have tried all available ports, and both SSL and not. Adjusted my number of connections, and tried with and without VPN. I get this same limiting speed all the time now.
Speed test shows around 100MBs
Any ideas why this might be? Is my ISP (Vodafone UK) causing me problems maybe? Would this still happen behind a VPN?
TIA
This is a redesign of the original Plex web ui inspired by Netflix and Disney+. The project is called Flixor.
Many thanks to https://github.com/Ipmake/PerPlexed for inspiring me to make my own.
The code is all written from the ground up.
Repo: https://github.com/Flixorui/flixor
This project is still a WIP and has bugs. When you find any, feel free to report them on the GitHub repo
Anyone else received a decrease message when logging in?
Hi all, so the email I used for Plex before the recent breach is under a year old and is only used on 2 other sites. After hearing of the breach, I logged everything out and then changed my Plex email to a new address. This afternoon I get an email to the email that was on the breach and someone has tried to create a new Plex account on it. For interest, I intercept setting a password and then log into the new account - it has my full name in the bio. I plan to delete the account and the email address which was exposed in the breach. Please be wary in the next few days of any attempts to hijack your Plex accounts - especially if you didn’t log off all of your devices - the data looks to be available to the usual rogues.
I’ve been tinkering with a side project that takes a media library folder and runs it through a really strict (i.e. Plex documented) naming/validation check.
https://github.com/mrsilver76/shelfscan
The original goal was to see what content I have that is badly named (turns out I’ve been naming multiple episodes in the same file wrongly 🙄) - but I thought it might help cut down on the 14,742 posts we get a month on r/plex that start with “my content isn’t showing up right and I know my naming convention is fine….”
A few disclaimers (because I know what I’m walking into by posting this here 😅):
This was part of that big announcement back in March:
https://www.plex.tv/blog/important-2025-plex-updates/
Has there been any update on this new app? When is it coming? What exactly will it be? Is it basically a successor to the current Plex Dash?
