My company started tracking AI usage per engineer. Probably to figure out which ones are the most popular and most frequently used. But with all this “adopt AI or get fired” talk in the industry I’m not taking any chances. So I just started asking my bots to do random things I don’t even care about.
The other day I told Claude to examine random directories to “find bugs” or answer questions I already knew the answer to. This morning I told it to make a diagram outlining the exact flow of one of our APIs, at which point it just drew a box around each function and helper method and connected them with arrows.
I’m fine with AI and I do use it randomly to help me with certain things. But I have no reason to use a lot of these tools on a daily or even weekly basis. But hey, if they want me to spend their money that bad, why argue.
I hope they put together a dollars spent on AI per person tracker later. At least that’d be more fun
Hi all,
I work at a search engine giant as a software engineer in privacy. We worked on our privacy product over the past 4 years, launched it in beta and it was ready for production. Suddenly our head of cyber security comes out and says that “People used to care about privacy in 2019 but now they want AI” so they decide to kill our product and repurposed the org on adding LLM malware to the product instead.
I get that it’s a job that pays the bills but I enjoyed every role I had before this one. This one too, I loved the people I worked with and the product. But I can’t deal with constant top level buffoonery.
The job market is absolutely brutal, even more so in Canada. I remember being approached 10 times a day on LinkedIn at some point and now everywhere I interview, apparently I’m competing with someone with more experience than me while simultaneously accepting significantly lower pay.

Whenever I read a tech journalist’s article about AI and programming, it almost always mentions that AI is amazing at writing code and its being used to write the majority of code these days.
Example from Casey Newton of Platformer: “AI is better at coding tasks than basically anything else…. I talk to a lot of software engineers and what they will say is that it used to be that we would write code, and then it moved to we write half the code and it gets autocompleted, and now we just supervise the code and we type in the box what kind of code we want the machine to write” (video)
This seems insane to me. I use AI as a tool to help me, but in no way do I trust it or use it to this level. Not even remotely close.
I feel like tech journalists are listening to what the founders and heads of the AI companies are saying, but no one is actually asking us what it’s like. The companies want to justify the obscene amount they’re spending on developing …
Our CTO convinced us to move our .NET applications to Node/nestJS a few years ago. While it’s not all bad, the benefits have simply down to better architecture choices and they could have easily been done in .NET. The number of headaches that NestJS has caused though is huge. I respected the CTO a lot but to this day I think he just had a huge anti-Microsoft bias he couldn’t get over.
I’m curious how common this is across the industry, especially if there are any real disaster migration stories.
To me, it’s feeling like a hype cycle. But, I’m not sure of this, because my view may be too narrow. So, I’d like to hear from you what you are seeing and experiencing at your own companies.
Details, to explain my perspective.
I’m an IC, 10 years in dev with a publicly traded software company, 25 years in the software industry. I mention this as during my time, I’ve experienced the dot com bubble, and several other cycles. Investment trends aside, there are always 3 core cost-reduction strategies, that get applied at opportune points: layoffs/reduced hiring, offshoring and automation.
AI seems to me to be this moment’s attempt at cost savings through rapid automation (and sometimes offshoring, in the cases where it’s been companies using cheaper labor under the guise of using AI). I also am thinking that this can provide a convenient explanation to investors in regards to RIFs. A way to remedy the common situation that a lot of companies don’t need the growth workforce that …
As the title states this is my situation.
I’m writing here not to complain about anything but I wanna ask your opinion about how this could happen. I wanna highlight that I judge myself enough informed about digital security(really big joke ahaha). I use 1password to manage all my passwords and I never save passwords inside browser’s cache.
This happened to my raspberry pi 5, which I was using as Navidrome server for my music collection. Yesterday morning (considering the modification date of files) all files have been encrypted by a supposed wannacry twin: want_to_cry (edit: no link with it, it’s just a small ransomware which aims vulnerable SAMBA configurations) and I HAVE NO IDEA how this could happen, mostly, on a Linux server.
I need to specify that I’ve opened my ssh port for external access but I’ve changed the password ofc. All passwords I’ve used with the server were not that strong (short word + numbers) just for practical reason since …
Ive been using my RBPI 4 as a nas for several years and it absolutely sucks. Ive used open media vault, casa os, and just plain Debian. Open media vault kinda worked alright on the hardware, except its clunky ui and design just made me hate it. Casa os was really simple to use, and what ive been running on for awhile. But the pi just cant keep up with it. There’s a lot i want to do with my nas, but right now all my pi can sort of handle is a basic next cloud setup for photos and storage. Just want to post this to let others know who are interested in going this route, because its a common gateway into the self hosted world for beginners. I know if i saw a post like this i would reconsider.
I got into self hosting some media for personal use a few months ago and I have been very happy. My current setup has been very basic, making use of an old laptop and some old disks for a temporary testing ground. Now I feel confident about the setup I want but I am a complete noob so I wanted to get some second opinions before I took the jump and pressed “Order”.
Most of my concern revolves around the hardware. The software stack below is more or less working perfectly right now and is subject to change, but I still included it so it gives some idea about the usecase. (Missing: home automation stuff, homarr, nextcloud, frigate etc.)
Green box is for the future and the red box contains the parts I am ordering now. I have no experience with HBAs and also with these janky looking m.2 to PCIe cards I’m getting from China. Still, seemed like the best option for what I need.
For the NAS part I’m set on using OMV (although I’m very happy with TrueNAS rn) …
YTPTube is a web-based GUI for yt-dlp, designed to make downloading videos from video platforms easier and user-friendly. It supports downloading playlists, channels, live streams and includes features like scheduling downloads, sending notifications, and built-in video player.
I shared this project back in old post and the reasons why i made it. Basically YTPTube has the following features and more:
yt-dlp
options. with a pre-made preset for media …Hello i finally got around to do this
It’s a simple docker compose of registry v2 with caddy reverse proxying http basic auth and I use tailscale funnel as a sort of dyndns
Dell wyse 5010 thin Client cost me 8 euros (refurbished). I put arch btw on it. The box is very silent and now sits on my desk. The hdd was about 5 euros, scrapped from an old laptop. I wouldn’t be surprised if the priciest component is the Sata adapter, but i had that lying around.
Annual electricity cost should be negligible, since it sits mostly in idle
It has 2 GB ram and 2tb storage. It’s not particularly fast, but it’s enough to host my hobby images for remote cluster deployment
I’m astonished they charge so much for managed docker registries when it’s both simple and extremely cheap to bring your own.
Just thought to share it here for people searching for cheap alternatives as well
I decided to see if I could have the ultimate Usenet downloader setup. I’ve added 4 indexers and almost every main backbone based on the Wiki (complete overkill, I know!) and I still get, some, missing articles on some downloads.
I have:
Newsgroup direct
Newshosting
Frugal
Easynews
Eweka
Hitnews
Newgroup Ninja
Farm
Supernews
Viper
(see, overkill!)
Is it now impossible to have every download complete? I assumed 1 provider would always have some of the required parts but it seems not to be the case!
Waddap y’all!
Yes, we admit it: National Toilet Paper Day is completely made up. But does that mean we can’t roll with it? Absolutely not. In fact, we’re unrolling a 35% discount that’s softer on your wallet than a triple-ply sheet. Just like a good roll, this deal is essential, reliable, and always there when you need it. It’s our cheeky way of keeping you covered while you surf.
So don’t get wiped out by full prices. Grab this 10-day deal before it gets flushed away. After all, no one likes being left high and dry without a roll or a discount. Think of it as the emergency stash you keep under the sink, always ready when you need it most. With StingyUsenet, you’ll never face that awkward moment of reaching for something that isn’t there. We’ve got you covered from start to finish, and we’ll keep rolling along as long as you do.
That’s why: as …
I was considering switching internet companies (to Quantum Fiber or Google fiber) and was wondering if anybody had any complaints/issues?

Soo, I had been daily driving Jellyfin, Navidrome and Feishin for while and it had always been inconvenient and not that great.
Yesterday, I finally gave in, hosted plex on docker and got the plex pass. In the last 24 hours or so, I’ve come to realise why so many people gladly pay for Plex.
Plex music could use some more features, but on the whole, it’s been great.
I’m glad to be a Plex subscriber now.
I have to temporarily close the beta for Coax.
I want to send a huge, massive shout-out and thank you to people who test-drove the app and sent in such helpful and valuable feedback! I’m honored and humbled by y’all, and once there’s any more news to share, this is where I’ll share it.
All the best,
- The Developer of Coax
I’ve been a casual plex users since 2015. Never really built or maintained libraries. Just used it occasionally. Over the past year I’ve set up a large library, shared it with family and friends. Thanks to the community for all the helpful guides and resources. I’ve been able to automate nearly everything and it’s a game changer!
From threadfin for IPTV plugins, to overseerr to automate requests to add shows, sonarr, radarr, etc. Thank you all for the helpful guides and everything you post here!
