I am sick and tired of all the posts (usually AI-generated by CEOs/CTOs/“thought leaders”) that start with “Code was never the {bottleneck, problem, hard part, …}.” I’m not sure whether this comes from a misunderstanding of what code is or a deliberate misrepresentation meant to promote AI usage.

For starters, two rhetorical questions. If code was never the hard part, why:

• do hundreds of different programming paradigms, languages, libraries, frameworks, design patterns, and system architectures exist? Granted, some of this is just programmers bikeshedding. Still, plenty of it reflects substantial differences and tradeoffs.
• didn’t you write it yourselves or hire a bunch of minimum-wage workers to do it for you instead of having to hire a ton of highly skilled (and highly paid) engineers?

A charitable explanation is that these people are genuinely clueless about what “coding” actually is. Perhaps in their mind coding is just …

I don’t think I’m unreasonable to believe that engineering judgment should demand reasoning and evidence. And yet, across five companies, including big tech, I have repeatedly watched engineers choose instinct, convention, and authority. Many barely skim the documentation, much less read books or papers. Yet they confidently repeat “facts” they cannot explain with anything more substantial than:

- “This is how we do it.”

I’ve noticed that I rarely come across women Principal Engineers or senior individual contributors (ICs) with 20+ years of experience.

Do many women developers tend to move into engineering management after 10–15 years, or is my observation just due to the companies I’ve worked at?

For those with long careers in tech, what has your experience been? What factors do you think contribute to this?

Maybe it’s just me, but it feels like it’s getting harder and harder to find sources of information that (a) don’t try to sell something, (b) have a high SNR, © are not entirely generated or rewritten by LLMs.

This subreddit used to be a fun place for me to get fresh ideas of cool projects to self-host and hear about people’s experiences, and seeing people build things, even sometimes with 32GB or 64GB of RAM.

If you use tailscale ssh, you rely on ACLs, and anyone else in your tailnet you should update as soon as possible. Even if you’re alone in your tailscale don’t write off the possibility of chained vulnerabilities.

Generally, when it comes to something as important as ssh, consider using openssh instead.

Hey there lads, just coming on here asking what the real difference is between Drunkenslug and other indexers like Nzbgeek and Althub.

For some context, yes, I am on Drunkenslug. My subscriptions for Nzbgeek and Althub are expiring and I’m on a tight budget, so I’m debating which one is worth paying for: lifetime nzbgeek, lifetime althub, or paying for drunkenslug each year.

It’s pretty expensive compared to the others being 25 euros a year for the Unlimited plan (which is the one I’ll need), is it really worth it over lifetime nzbgeek and althub?

Anyone have a support email for Digital Carange. I got a discord alert that I had been booted from the discord channel because i no longer had an account. I attempted to just visit the website to try to find one, but i can’t even load the site because it says I am IP banned from loading it.

I am paid up until June 2029. I just visited the site in the last two weeks, so it’s not like I would appear as dormant to them. I checked my other indexers and none of them have any crazy API hits happening to them, so I don’t think it would be an issue of me flooding their server inadvertently.

My name is u/CoppellCitizen and I have recently downgraded almost my entire library to 1080p and below.

To be honest, I was the only person in my house (also out of the house) who truly appreciated 4K. Since that was the case, I decided to just downgrade my movies and gain back much needed HDD space.

Have no fear, the movies I love the most on 4K stayed that way, but the vast majority of my library didn’t warrant the 4K appreciation if I was the only one who cared. My wife and kids have not said a thing about the quality change so in the long run it’s a win. To be completely frank, 1080p looks really good on our 4K TVs.

I’ve noticed that I can’t match any new content that I add to my server. Watchlist also appears to be down.

Plex.tv is even down. Not good.

*Edit: Keep checking https://status.plex.tv/ for updates and resolutions. As of 12:20pm CDT, some things may still be acting up. Some users report things working though. I can use my local server and match newly added items now.

I was surprised that Plex’s internal servers being down caused peoples’ servers to go down. I always thought that Plex servers ran locally on devices and didn’t rely on Plex’s own servers to run them…

Am I missing something?
