So it is obvious that generally the development of game graphics has always been about mimicking how a camera would see the world (as opposed to human eyes). This is evident in many effects (notoriously the sun flare which is simply a reflection of light in a lens).
That leads me to my question. Thanks to the Steam Deck I’ve started playing again a bit, and I’ve noticed that game cutscenes are often very… boring. It’s either just spectacle (not graciously choreographed either) of explosions and similar sort of things, or when it’s drama, it’s just people standing and talking. I’ve been wondering, have any games used cinema tricks (interesting camera angles and compositions, subtle framing etc.) to make them more engaging to watch?
P.S. I’m playing through Mirror’s Edge Catalyst now, and a cutscene might as well be audio-only as nothing interesting is happening on the screen, which inspired this question.

In the past year or two, I’ve gotten back in touch with my love of old-school first person shooter games. In particular, I’ve gotten pretty obsessed with Doom and Doom 2, largely due to the incredibly vast selection of fan-made levels, modifications, and all sorts of other custom content. There are easily dozens of game length conversions that I would put head and shoulders above either of the original campaigns.
This got me wondering what other games and fan bases have similarly vast bodies of work I’m simply unaware of. I’m relatively new to PC gaming, being a lifelong console gamer primarily, so most of my experience with mods has been old Super Nintendo rom hacks and the like. I’ve dabbled a bit in custom campaigns for age of empires back in the day. Otherwise it’s all pretty much new to me.

Traditional language learning is really hard and not much fun. I set out to make a way to learn languages that’s more effective and more fun!
In Noun Town you walk around a dull, grey, boring island. You pick things up, listen, read, and speak your chosen language and as you do that the world regains its color and comes back to life, unlocking more mini-games and more local villagers to talk to.

Recently I was in “argument” with a friend on why I think DLSS is a godsend and a curse. I am curious where majority of you stand on the subject.
My thoughts on the matter:
DLSS is a FANTASTIC tool for “lower end” systems to get high framerate - it’s also a fantastic tool to use groundbreaking technology with higher framerates like RTX, LUMEN, etc…
However, I also think it’s been a curse in the gaming industry over the course of the past four/five years. I personally feel like a lot of developers are skimping out on optimization and relying too heavily on the use of DLSS.
Prior to DLSS, if a game was launched with an average performance of about 45 FPS on the most recent hardware, everyone would claim that the game was “poorly optimized” or a “terrible port”. What I am seeing now among friends, is if anyone’s game is running poorly they just suggest to put on DLSS…
