Planet of Lana is a vibrant and vivid dreamscape. From luscious greens to bright blues, it’s very clear how important art is in a game like this. Some issues hold the title back, such as a lack of checkpoints leading to frustration in puzzles. Though the environmental storytelling is strong, the puzzle elements largely work with the use of “companion-based gameplay”, and the stealth sections, while basic, make for a fun time. All in all, Planet of Lana is an engaging and unique game, and a world worth experiencing.
I was thinking of how awesome it was to play A Link to the Past in 1995, back when the Internet wasn’t really big (for reference, 9.2% of the US population had it at the time).
The combination of being a kid and guides and tips being much harder to access made an already amazing game seem much more epic, magical and daunting. It really felt like I could spend my entire life exploring those two worlds and the possibilities and secrets seemed endless.
Now even people who want to play spoiler free, say Zelda TOTK, usually resort regularly to guides and videos to get unstuck or to find the most efficient way to deal with challenges. Part of it of course is the fact that, as an adult, your gaming time is usually more limited, so sometimes you just want to progress in the story faster. As an adult, you also have much more experience and a better understanding of how games usually work, so it’s easier to estimate how big the game really is and to find patterns in how and where …
