Since 2011 was 10 years ago (2021 – 2011 = 10), I thought it’d be a good idea to reflect on what is considered one of the best years in gaming – I’d personally consider 2011 to be the peak of AAA gaming. Since AAA development cycles 10 years ago were half of what they are today (see this interview with Uncharted 1-3 director Amy Hennig), and live service games were a lot less common, we also got a greater quantity of AAA games than we do now. And while the indie scene was still blooming – 283 games released on Steam in 2011 versus 8290 games in 2019 – there were still a lot of high quality indie games that released in 2011, and the average quality of an indie game on Steam and the three consoles at the time was higher than it is now.

One thing that should be noted is when it mentions 3D it means stereoscopic 3D like Avatar and the 3DS.
How well do you think the predictions hold up? Obviously some are completely off, like how 2D gaming will become “retro”, but are there any that you think did come true?

Today i wanted to share stories about one-of-a-kind online pvp games (at least for pc gaming) you may not heared about, something that were so unique that you will not find any analogues for them today. All of them had a potential for greatness, but the desisions of developers, as well as some other factors sealed their fate forever. Here we will have a mmorpg, a co-op figthing, a turn-based arena fighter, battle royale (actually, even two of them!) and a dungeon master simulator, so stay tuned!
Let’s start with a most ambitious one - a post-apocalyptic mmorpg TimeZero. It was a game made in flash, yet it had massive amout of players and in many aspects were deeper than most of the modern games in the same genre.

I’ve spent tens of thousands of hours playing Dawn of War 1, I remember being like 10 years old when it came out, I was obsessed. Eventually when I was like 12 or whatever I actually managed to get an automatch score of 1650 and was like the top 100 Space Marines player. That game honestly changed my life.
Then Dawn of War 2 came out and while I think its gameplay design and design philosophy overall were not as good, it had a lot of awesome things going for it; the campaign had A LOT of depth and in terms of an isolated single player experience I think it might have been THE best RTS ever made, even more so than Warcraft 3/Starcraft 2. Fair amount of players play these games focusing solely on the narrative and for those players, I feel like the game delivered on every level.
The 2nd Dawn of War was just different and I don’t mind them expermenting with the genre instead of playing it 100% safe. I think I’ve spent like 1000-2000 hours playing the 2nd game and all …

We are a small company in Brazil that has begun our Visual Novel project for our Omnium Universe. And it’s available in Patreon, here.
We have been writing and developing another game based in this universe, around 5 years ago, but we saw that we needed more money to develop the original FPS project we envisioned. So we started the company as software house, while aiming to grow so we could make what we love. Games. And we love deep, involving stories.
Since them, we have established our company, and have begun saving resources for this project - and as we love compelling stories and strong narrative, we want to make the first introduction into this universe as a Visual Novel.
