Earlier this year, Eurogamer published an article, “In praise of the 7⁄10”. It was a sentiment I didn’t fully understand until the credits rolled on RoboCop: Rogue City. Now I get it. Sometimes you don’t want filet mignon, sometimes you just want a cheeseburger. In a year filled to the brim with widely celebrated 10⁄10 masterpieces, I’d like to take some time to remember the 7’s.
For me, that game was Rogue City, a mid-budget AA that knows exactly what it is and never extends beyond that. It has all the quirks of a quintessential 7⁄10: janky animations, dated character models, buggy cutscenes, hilariously underbaked RPG elements, and gameplay that remains the same from its first hour to its last. Essentially what you’re getting is a game ripped straight out of the sixth generation and run through Unreal Engine 5. I’m curious if anyone’s in the same boat as me who has started to detest a majority of grinds and progressions. As a CoD player of course I’m worn on the battle pass cycle and the leveling as the years go on, but I’m also strongly turned off by several of the grind mechanics in other games.
Both Risk of Rain 2 and Deep Rock Galactic have a lot of gameplay mechanics locked behind achievement oriented unlocks and leveling on an individual character and class basis. It’s often praised or just not brought up how these grinds tend to be to the player, which means they’re probably quite good, yet I find myself feeling very demotivated to want to play a game as I’m stuck on such low levels with low performing gear or the undesired loadout on a character I have an interest to play in.
I wonder if anyone is in the same boat, and if you aren’t, I want to hear why.
