Hey all, I wanted to share a story from the last few days that perhaps you will find interesting. And I want to share what I did to resolve it and the legal trouble any of us can get in if they are not careful.

The short backstory is that I’m always looking for interesting themes as a game dev to turn into games. Some time ago, I stumbled upon the Milgram experiment: basically, people were asked to inflict pain on another person (an actor) to see how far they would go if an authority figure was ordering them to do it. Now, the “victim” was an actor, but as far as the subjects knew, they were harming another person, and most went pretty far and even all the way.

When I read this (and watched two documentaries on the subject - the original 1960s one and a modern one), I could see this being a topic for a game as I’ve always wanted to explore morally complex themes in a game. This isn’t ironic.

I used to think Speeed was a little meh, but then he uploaded Dota videos on his personal channel around 2022, and I was delighted to learn he can be really insightful. It taught me that it isn’t necessarily Speeed as a player, but it’s more that GameLeap just isn’t a product geared towards me!

This is the most I’ve been excited for NA Dota in a long while. Wildcard has FOUR NA players on their roster. That’s more NA players than Soniqs/Quincy Crew or TSM had in 2022, than Shopify, TSM, or Nouns in 2023, or Nouns in 2024.

They’re 1-1 vs Tundra for elimination at PGL Wallachia now, but even if they lose, it’s still exciting to see signs of life from NA Dota. Think about it this way: a fresh and proper NA Dota team took games off of Spirit and Tundra, when the old guard of NA Dota like Bulba floundered in astounding mediocrity for years, after taking so many foreign players to be an NA teams in name only.

We are guardians and he is a mid player. If his enemy denies and last hits creeps it’s automatically a smurf, if someone’s playing better than not playing it’s a smurf. I’m so tired of it and he says that I’m blind if I don’t see them smurfing. How do I tell him not everyone is a smurf?

• Flex slot changes made getting slots 1, 3 and 4 difficult to get. Slot 2 is unchanged.
• The Boon changes made it so most games you won’t max out every ability.
• Trooper waves are worth less souls than before.
• Less early sustain puts a bigger emphasis on lane dominating heroes.
• Objectives are tankier to minion damage

These changes combined lead to much more one-sided stomps.

The winning team will have more flex slots, more urns = more abilities maxed, and the losing team will have a harder time farming to power spikes due to lack of slots and slower souls/min (waves crashing give less souls). Not to mention , when you’re behind you need to spend 1-2 slots on counter items. The losing team also has a lower chance of getting winion plays for flex slots by pushing minions to walkers to chip away at its health.

Solutions:

• Keep the soul changes for troopers.
• Adjust the flex slots to allow the losing team a chance to have a decent build: 2 guardians, 1 walker, 3 walkers, 1 pair of base …
