I feel like when I was a kid, there were way more games where comedy was front and center, something that really defined the experience. These days, it feels like humor has taken a backseat. Sure, it’s still there but more as a side dish than the main course throughout. The focus is more on the dramatic, sometimes overly so. You might stumble across a few funny moments, but they’re rarely the focus anymore. And this isn’t just limited to games, it’s happening in movies to though to a much lesser extent. In the gaming world, we do still get some comedy focused titles. On the AAA side, there’s High on Life, and in the indie scene, you’ve got games like Ctrl Alt Deal that are still keeping the genre alive, somewhat. But it still feels like we’re barely scratching the surface of what comedy in games could actually be, especially in as sad a time we’re living in in all honesty.

For me, it’s Far Cry 3. The soundtrack is perfect.

One of the most atmospheric, suspenseful, and cinematic soundtracks ever made. The gritty undertones and sudden drums/bass and heavily built-up crescendos perfectly capture the increasing chaos and stakes. It’s a chaotic-yet-orderly kinda shtick. It also gets more eerie as the game goes on, letting you immerse yourself into Jason’s oncoming descent into insanity. Idk man. Words can only do so much. Just try and play the game on mute (or turn off the music slider). You’ll get what I mean.

The music and world really sell half the game. Ubisoft’s peak in terms of art direction imo. Everything was perfectly dialled in and in sync. The soundtrack, the menu, the character models, the tatau concept for the skill tree, the fluid and gory takedowns, the brutal heal animations, the punchy and heavy feel of sliding on your knees, the camera shake on explosions, the tower design. Several months ago, I was recommended this guy’s video and posted it to this sub. People pointed out how bro took all this time and effort to make the video, only for Valve to go and change the game substantially just a few weeks later (the big map rework).

I don’t know or follow this channel, but his videos are pretty unique and insightful, and also quite funny.

A small update just dropped (4.5 MB). They added a new line of code, updated the panorama version, and made slight changes to the game’s localization.

Most likely preparation for something.
