Whether it’s strictly turn based or mixed with real time, has there been any games that took turn based combat but then made it look cinematic when the attacks were played out?
I remember when KotoR first came out and it had the real time with pause combat and the fights actually looked sort of real. As opposed to just I hit, then you hit, that most turn based games did it actually had dodging, parrying, etc. Back then I thought that in the future, with better graphics and processing power, we’d have games with fights that looked choregraphed but were still under your control. Fast forward to today and I can’t think of any game that actually does this or does it really well.
The closest I’ve seen is a few smaller games, like Frozen Synapse, that have you and the enemy make your decisions and then both sides unfold at the same time. The upcoming game Phantom Brigade seems to be doing this on a larger scale.
Anything on the horizon or that I missed?
