Often we see Remasters and Ground up remakes take artistic liberties with the original games.
I’m talking like Gears of War Ultimate Edition, Demons Souls Remake, Shadow of the Colossus and even the GTA Definitive Edition. Rather than full on Remakes and Reboots (like say the Ratchet and Clank Remake)
It seems to come down to - we now have newer more advanced technology so let’s make these games look modern. But it feels as if they’re less interested in maintaining the colour, atmosphere and tone of the original work.
It may technically “look better” or look nicer but does it change the feel of the game and artstyle too much?
Like the Original Gears of War was an early Unreal Engine 3 show off game and they went crazy with various visual filters. But the remake instead uses a lot of dynamic lighting systems and goes for a more colourful look. But this fundamentally changes how certain levels feel.
Last week my friend Discrete Infinity and I released a game we’ve been working on since the summer.
You play as Max, a washed-up writer looking for closure and communion. Wander the block, and share fleeting connections over cigarettes with other lonely souls living on the fringe.
He did all of the writing, 3D models and programming, and I did the OST. When he came to me with a noir/vaporwave world without music, I was thrilled to give it the fullness of life with a lo-fi mix of jazz, chillout, synthwave, and hiphop. The result is an experience that resonates long after the game is finished.
If you like vaporwave aesthetic, noir elements, introspection and psychology, this may be your new favorite game! We are hoping to build off of the ideas implemented here, so any feedback is extremely appreciated.

My second game, Downslope, is finally out! :DDDD
Downslope is a straightforward snowboarding adventure where you have to make your way down a mysterious Mountain. You meet spooky ghosts - people who’ve died on its slopes before you - and you slowly learn more about them as you make your way to the End.
It’s kinda like a more full-featured Ski Free if you’ve ever played that! :D
Downslope was a lot of fun to make, especially as a change of pace after my previous game, Blast Brawl 2. If anybody wants to give a try or has any questions let me know!
As someone has mentioned in the comments, Game Bar must be enabled for this shortcut to work.
I gues most of you already know about this shortcut but since I learned it recently I expected many poeple to be unaware of it also.
It is super annoying having to go to display properties every single time you need to enable or disable HDR, this makes the shitty Windows HDR implementation much more beareble.
