Shot these around Amsterdam over the past few years, chasing the evenings that actually looked promising. Most were taken in the 20 to 40 minutes around sunset/sunrise.

Ik fietste gisteravond in Amsterdam op mijn normale fiets. Ik rij dus op een fietspad met een voetpad aan de rechterkant en een autoweg aan de linkerkant. Ik wil op een gegeven moment links afslaan bij een kruising. Ik ga dus iets naar rechts om mijn fiets te keren en zo zicht te krijgen op eventuele fietser en automobilisten. Op dat moment komt er een man op een elektrische tenway fietst mij rechts over het voetpad in halen. Hij kan nog maar net afremmen en om mij heen fietsen. Hij racet door en roept nog “Absolutely mad”. Waarop ik boos wordt en hem uitscheld omdat hij het blijkbaar normaal vindt om rechts in te halen over notabene een voetpad.

Ik ben het helemaal zat hoe mensen tegenwoordig fietsen, zeker met de opkomst van elektrische fietsen. Niemand gebruikt meer de bel, denken dat ze voorrang moeten krijgen omdat ze elektrisch fietsen, fietsen in het midden van het fietspad en halen dus zelfs rechts over voetpaden in. Ze moeten maar een rijbewijs gaan invoeren voor …

Well it’s not exactly tourism as i’m going to live there for 2 to 8 month but the topic is related.

So, i’m going to do some volunteering in Netherland (ESC) and i’m really hyped it’s my first time going to another country of EU and my second time going to another country at all!

So i’m a bit curious as to what should i know before getting there or just what should i get ! Which food i should try first for exemple (yeah i love eating).

And bonus question: what are like the cheap thing to eat in netherland since my food allowance won’t be really high (something around 200 euro)

Genuine question, as I just had the pleasure of meeting a lovely Brit, that had been living here for 12 years, who basically expected everyone to speak English with him.

I’m not talking about people who are currently learning Dutch. If you’ve moved here recently and are taking Dutch lessons, even if you’re still struggling with it, good for you. I’m talking about people who have been here for 5, 10+ years and still rely almost entirely on English because they know Dutch people will switch.

I’m Dutch and English is my second language. I speak it well, but I didn’t grow up with it. Like most Dutch people, I had years of English lessons at school and countless hours of exposure before I could actually use it comfortably. And even now, English is probably the foreign language I enjoy speaking the least.

So I wonder if English-speaking expats and immigrants actually realise that we are the ones adapting to them, rather than English being some neutral …

I am mostly addressing Dutch parents. My house overlooks a 30km/h street. It is not a busy street and many families live on it. What I see everyday from my living room is absurd. Tenths of children with average age around 12 on fatbikes, no helmets of course,driving erratically both on pavement and on street. Without exaggeration there is minimum a near miss incident every day with a car. And again I emphasize that my street is not a busy street on a big city. Ten days ago I almost hit two girls that thought would be normal to cross an avenue vertically from a side road without even slightly braking just 200m away from my place. It took me 2 days to recover from shock of what it could have been.Thank God my car is equipped with good brakes and has active brake assist with cross-traffic function. What are these parents exactly thinking giving their children such means of transportation? Can a Dutch parent explain me where all this madness derives from? And please don’t tell me …
