And all that for free. They also brought a bunch of plants that my friend had to pay for herself. She also had to plant them. The total price of those was 7.5€
There are some rules:
- The garden can be a max. of 45 cm wide
- There needs to be a min. of 2 meters of the sidewalk left
- You need to take care of it

You see these “gardens” everywhere, and I always thought it was just locals who were building them in the DIY style.
I tried very hard to obtain a dataset of all these sidewalk gardens in Amsterdam from Gemeente, but no success yet :(
It would make an epic heatmap of the best neighborhoods in Amsterdam, where walking is enjoyable and where neighbours deeply care about public space.
Just got back to the U.S. after a 2 week trip that ended in Amsterdam and I just wanted to let you all know that I’ve visited a lot of cities in the EU over the years and Amsterdam is really so special! My husband and I did not want to leave.
We stayed in a small hotel in the Weesperbuurt neighborhood and it was so charming and quiet but we were able to do and see so much with a 5 day GVB pass. The weather was beautiful (I think maybe we got lucky but it was nice after gloomy weather in France and Belgium). We didn’t have a single bad meal (shout out to the cutest spot near us, Taste Like Chicken). Everyone was incredibly kind and easy to make friends with, but not loud or obnoxious like my fellow Americans can be. In such a tense time where we were a bit embarrassed about where we’re from, not a single person held it against us or treated us badly. We spent our last afternoon walking around Sarphatimonument Park, watching cute dogs and birds (you guys have parakeets?????) and baby …
Hey. I saw this ad on MP that seemed too good to be true. However, I wrote to the seller and went to see the bike. He gave me an address close to Oosterpark but when I got there, he told me that he was 30mins away. However the bike was parked right there so I checked it out. It was in pretty good condition and exactly what I was looking for. I got pretty excited.
After 20mins went by, I got a message from the seller saying that they couldn’t make it, but they offered to bring the bike to my address. A police officer was parked just around the corner so I got suspicious. Maybe that’s why they changed their mind about meeting with me. I turned the bike around and I checked the serial number. I entered it on the platform and found out that it was reported stolen just 2 days ago.
Of course I got upset because I wanted the bike but it wasn’t right. If anyone recognizes it, I can send you the address where it was last parked.
Amsterdam’s trash problem is out of control, and it just keeps getting worse-especially now that summer is almost here and the city is filling up with tourists. Overflowing bins and open containers are everywhere, garbage bags are piling up on the sidewalks, and bottles and cans are scattered all over the place because the statiegeld system is a total mess. There aren’t enough return points, and the machines are always broken or full, so people just dump their bottles wherever they can.
With the hefty waste collection charge (€469 a year for multi-person households), you’d expect the city to keep things clean and organized. But instead, the gemeente keeps talking about plans and campaigns while the trash just keeps piling up. It’s honestly sad for a city like Amsterdam, and residents deserve way better than this endless mess.
What else can we do as individuals to help tackle this growing problem?
Which are perfection to you, where you feel like you couldn’t get the same exact thing in an equally sized city?
I like :
Piccolo Storia Pizza: the pizza is perfect but the place is also such a vibe
The gozleme stand at Noordermarkt on Saturdays
Taco Lindo: I had completely given up on Mexican food in Amsterdam until I had a taco here
Dignita: love the creativity of the brunch options
Kras Haring: consistently smooth not to salty
Edit: If you suggest a place let me know why or what to what to eat there! Appreciate all the recommendations!!
Hello Dutch friends. I hope I am allowed to post this here as it is an english language sub.
I am aware that this week your country has been commemorating liberation in WW2. As a Canadian I wanted, from the bottom of my heart and with all sincerity, thank your country for remembering Canadian veterans.
Your rememberance makes national news every year here in Canada. And it brings tears to the eyes of Canadians watching those stories. I have even seen several posts on the r/Canada sub from the Netherlands today. Every one of them made me cry.
As a country we have not been invaded in a very long time and have lived a relatively peaceful safe life. In addition many Canadians are foreign born and so have not been taught Canadian history. But I have had the benefit of learning about the liberation of the Netherlands, the hunger winter, the German flooding, Princess Margreit being born in Ottawa but not Canada, and the tulips sent every year as a symbol of gratitude. These are taught by …
Another bike seat stolen in the Netherlands 😒 Will my neighbors think I’m helpful or annoying?
When are we gonna say enough is enough instead of silently suffering because collective action is apparently scarier than another 45-minute bus replacement. What does it take for an actual reform?
I’m new to the Dutch electrical outlet scene. Are these outlets blocked because they’re inactive or do they maybe have a protective cover but are active? If it’s a protective cover, how do you remove it? They look like they swivel somehow.
Hopefully this creates some understanding of what kinds of noise is worthy of complaints and why.
I think I got a little too ambitious lol No one else using the account, just me
