I saw this picture doing rounds on social media and wanted to know some locals’ perspective on it (I’m not from here). More so, if true, how was this achieved. If not, how exaggerated is this. Thanks

Before you read, note this is not a happy post and it might be very triggering. I feel like I need to share this because it feels like a fever dream. These events happened today Tuesday 3rd of June.
It was around 5am in the city center. I was still sleeping when I heard a scream. Being a fucked up guy growing up in an abusive household, I woke up right away. When I hear a woman cry or shout, I automatically enter emergency mode and become alert and focused. As it is the city center, loud voices or shouts are not uncommon so kept an ear out to confirm my traumatic reflexes.
The second scream was unmistakable: “HELP, I AM BEING RAPED” followed by cries. I jumped on my phone called 112. I directly thought about the psychology research demonstrating that when someone shouts for help in public, most individuals around assume that someone else will help or call for help and the person in need is not helped in time. It is probably even less so if the individuals are sleeping or …
I simply can’t take this trash situation in Amsterdam anymore. It’s bizarre and disgusting how dirty the entire city has become. Every single public trash bin seems to be wide open, directly because of scavengers looking for cans for the Statiegeld system.
I know there have been posts about this already this year, but with the summer season here, it feels like it’s getting even worse. This needs urgent attention from the municipality.
Not sure what can be done, but either:
- End with the Satiegeld system
- Redesign the bins so they can’t be opened by scavengers
- A separate bin (although I don’t think it is effective, scavengers would still look at the normal bins)
- Something else
We pay so much tax for waste collection (and so much tax in general), and I don’t see the municipality doing anything about this problem.
I’ve already submitted a report here https://meldingen.amsterdam.nl/incident/beschrijf with photos of some of the bins I …
I’ve spent a lot of time in the Netherlands. I’m a Brit, across the sea, but have learnt to speak your language, your culture, had multiple long term relationships with Dutch woman and live in your country as a guest. Here’s just some of my thoughts.
Firstly, before we go on, I have to come out and self identify as a Nederphile, I love the Netherlands. When I get off the flight at Schiphol and the smell hit’s my nose at the station in Schiphol, it’s like a dust smell, I know I’m home.
Here’s just my rambling thoughts
The people
The only way to describe the Dutch is “reasonable”. They are just reasonable about anything. If you are dealing with them then they will see reason and generally act in a pragmatic way about any situation. Situations that the Brits would find crazy and amazing they deal with pragmatically. I observed a couple, in an open relationship, had the guy going out for a date and before he went his partner ironed …
I moved to the Netherlands in early 2023 with high hopes. I had a solid engineering background, a Thai partner I love, and a job lined up that helped with visa sponsorship, relocation costs, and even finding housing in Delft. For a while, it felt like everything was going to click.
Then the luck started running out.
What I Loved:
Delft is beautiful, and I genuinely loved living there. Quiet, charming, bike-friendly. Great for my lifestyle.
Cycling culture is incredible. I gave it a 10⁄10 even in the rain. I miss that freedom every day.
Work-life balance was unreal. I had 40 days off, and nearly everyone took long summer holidays. I used that time to travel—especially in winter when the weather wore me down.
I made friends more easily than expected. Despite what I’d read, my workplace had lots of expats, coffee culture, and Dutch folks who were open and easy to connect with.
Where Luck Turned:
I got laid off unexpectedly just 6 months after my partner joined me. She …
