I’m walking by the Albert Heijn near the Javaplein with my trombone on my back and my gig bag on my shoulder and my rain jacket hood up, so I don’t have a lot of visibility.
Some kid (maybe 18 ish) bikes up slowly behind me and runs into me, almost knocking me over, then slowly bikes away muttering “kanker homo met je blauwe haar.” I don’t think he was expecting to get cussed out in a deep, loud, English voice, because he said “wat?” then quickly cycled away.
Just weird, and I’m not sure what to think about it (not totally relevant but I’m straight).
So there’s something I noticed. I go on a date, we have fun, there’s good vibes, but then when she sees that I ride a fatbike, she instantly seems to be put off, like she got “the ick”. Then the chatting usually fizzles out and there’s no second date. This happened multiple times now, so it seems like a pattern to me. Once a Dutchie even told me that she “doesn’t feel a connection” when I was saying goodbye by my bike and asked what she’d be up for as a second date. I know this is not much context, but is it the bike?
I’m a mid twenties guy, have a good job, make decent money, dress stylishly, like concerts and can even tolerate like a museum. I moved here 6 months ago and bought a fatbike to commute. Only managed to find a place like 30 minutes cycling from my work, so it seemed like a good option and I think they are pretty cool. But now I think I might have made a mistake. Should I switch to like a Cowboy or something? …
I was waiting for someone to go for a walk in the dunes in The Hague on the Duivelandsestraat. I saw twelve kids riding past on fatbikes, but I didn’t think much of it at first. Because it was raining outside they sat right in front of me in the entryway of a house.
Suddenly, one kid walked behind us, and I heard and felt a loud splash. He had thrown a water balloon at us. It was so strange, so I asked him why he would do that. That’s when he started cursing, calling me gay and using the K word, shouting that I should stay out of duindorp. The other boys began filming as they walked toward me, kicking me, and throwing sticks and stones.
Fortunately, I had a bike to protect myself with. I wanted to fight back so badly, but reading recent articles about these kids and how some have even used chains I’m glad I kept my composure. Unfortunately, I couldn’t just cycle away because the person I was with didn’t have a bike, so I had to stay to protect her.
