You mention living in Amsterdam and suddenly someone who neither lives here nor visits much needs to tell you it’s the biggest shithole on earth. Too crowded, too expensive, no “real Dutch people” left, everyone is arrogant. Okay, enjoy your town then?

I get that city life isn’t for everyone. But the sheer hostility is bizarre. I don’t hear people in Amsterdam getting this worked up about someone enjoying life in a village.

Is it a Calimero complex? Resentment about how much attention Amsterdam gets? Some weird provincial pride? Half the time it feels like they’re arguing with an imaginary Amsterdammer who thinks everything outside the A10 is farmland.

Where does this come from? And do you get these reactions too?

I know complaining about tourists is practically a local pastime, but I honestly find most of them quite nice.

There’s something genuinely cute about someone stopping you to ask for directions, a restaurant recommendation or just some random information about the city. They’re usually friendly, curious and excited to be here, and I actually enjoy helping them out.

I also try to treat tourists the way I’d like to be treated when I’m visiting a city in another country. It’s always nice when a local takes a minute to help you out, especially somewhere unfamiliar.

Sure, mass tourism has its downsides, but that doesn’t mean we have to be grumpy towards individual visitors. Most are just people trying to enjoy our beautiful city.

Nietsvermoedend nog even door de Kalverstraat lopen op Koningsdag en vervolgens in elkaar geslagen worden door meerdere personen. Het overkomt een 28-jarige man als hij daar samen met zijn vriendin loopt. Ken jij deze verdachten? Neem dan nu contact op met de politie.
Het is maandagavond 27 april omstreeks 23.00 uur, Koningsdag is dan bijna voorbij. Het stel loopt over de Kalverstraat in de richting van het Rembrandtplein. Het is dan erg druk op straat als iemand plots hard tegen de schouder van de man aan stoot.
Als het slachtoffer zich omdraait krijgt hij direct
een harde klap in zijn gezicht. Het blijkt dat deze verdachte (NN 1) onderdeel uitmaakt van een grotere groep geweldplegers. De andere verdachte (NN 2) uit deze groep pakt de man van achter beet bij zijn keel en trekt het slachtoffer naar de grond. Eenmaal op de grond wordt hij door meerdere personen (waaronder NN 3) uit dezelfde groep geschopt en geslagen.

This must be one of the most depressing signs in the Netherlands.
