My three-year-old fell down today while we were walking around De Pijp. She cried a lot and had a wound on her hand from the fall. I tried to clean it and comfort her, even though I was feeling quite distressed myself, because I was worried people might be annoyed by her crying (busy street with lots of cafes).
After a while, a waitress came by with a wet towel and some kind words for my daughter. A few moments later, she returned with a small plaster and ice cream. I was completely taken by surprise and truly touched by her kindness. Thank you! Thanks to all the friendly and empathetic Dutch people!
Coming from a place that would never ever not in a million years close down a highway for a festival, because Cars and Capital rule all, it was just so damn neat to stroll along the Ring today with my neighbors. I got to see the skyscrapers in Zuid from angles that usually whizz by way too fast; take a closer look at the graffiti adding color to the barriers; strike silly poses under the giant directional signs; practice my Dutch over tapas with strangers at a half-kilometer-long picnic table; dance to house music during normal daylight hours (I’m too old and tired for clubs and raves!); and hang out with big fat bumblebees who looked stoked at the fresh pollen along the makeshift bos. This was like nothing I’d ever experienced before and I feel really lucky and grateful to have scored tickets.
I’m definitely glad I checked the weather and wore comfy shoes, little clothes, and lots of sunscreen. I hope others around me had fun. It really looked like they did, and that’s the best you …
Hello!
“Tourist” here and Visiting Amsterdam for the first time for a 4 day music festival in Zandvort. I had 1 day in Amsterdam to walk around and see the beautiful city and canals. I woke up at 5am due to jetlag and thought I’d go tour around the city and was shocked at what I saw. I’ve since read alot about the condition of trash in and around the city. What I found surprising is there is actually alot of bins for people to dispose of their trash.
I noticed walking around central at 6am was multiple people 6+ scavenging through bins, and then multiple birds tearing rubbish bags open that have been left behind. The amount of cigarettes butts that are also left flicked laying on the ground.
Honestly it was a shock since I’ve seen some nice things about Amsterdam online.
Id love to know if there’s any links you can provide where I can write to an organisation about the situation and share my concerns that many of you also seem to have.
Hello all, I was wondering if someone could please help me shed some light on a situation that’s been eating away at me.
My partner visited a sex worker whilst on a stag do weekend. He only admitted after I found out about it and saw the payments. Just wondered, do you have to pay an entrance fee into a sex workers room, and how much is it on average? He said there was no sex involved, it was just a handjob but I feel that what he paid was a lot and it’s just making me question it.
Thank you x
I particularly wanna know about the supposed Communist area, but I’m pretty much curious about everything on there.
So I can either be “Mrs”, or “the lord”??🤣. Are men and mortals banned from Bol.com?
I lived in the Netherlands from birth till I was 16 and then moved to the uk with the family. The 1st day in the uk I drank a glass of tap water in London I almost threw up it was horrible, tasted so weird with a super strong smell of chlorine. I was watching some Dutch video on YouTube and got me thinking about the tap water it is really the best in the world ,no bottled water I have drank compared to the taste of Dutch tap water.
Enjoy it for me!
Studies show babies develop better with a parent at home for at least 6 months, yet here it’s normal to send them to daycare at 10–12 weeks. This seems less about choice and more about economic and political pressure on families.
Why isn’t this questioned more in Dutch society?
LE- I’ll avoid saying ‘studies show’ since many people get stuck on that, and it’s true that there are multiple studies supporting both sides. However, many European countries—especially the wealthier ones—offer longer maternity leave based on the argument that it’s beneficial for children. So I’m curious why that’s not the case in the Netherlands.
