I was on the escalator when two men right behind me started asking me to pick up a bottle for them. I turned around to see if they had something in their hands (because if they did, I don’t mind helping someone pick something up), but they didn’t, so I just kept walking, because that’s how I react when I feel uncomfortable. I just started going down the stairs without saying anything to them. While I was walking, I heard one of them say louder, “You pick up my s*!t, b!*ch.” I again ignored them. I stopped behind a man about 15 steps ahead of them, and suddenly something hit me extremely hard in the head. They threw the bottle directly at my head.
I am a woman, I was alone, and I didn’t react before (which was probably what pissed them off), so they probably thought I was an easy target. I was shocked and mad, so I started shouting at them, asking them what their problem was, loud enough for everyone to hear. I’m not into making scenes or anything, but I was so shocked and mad… They …
Yesterday evening I was sharing a beer with my girlfriend at Bret next to station Sloterdijk. A bum-looking eastern European guy wearing a clear blue hoodie and a yellow backpack approached us asking me for a cigarette quite politely.
I rarely refuse if it is asked nicely. While I was rolling it for him, he was having some random talks, claimed to be russian etc etc. He got closer while talking and discretely grabbed my phone that was on the table, luckily my girlfriend who was seating on the other side of the table noticed that and exposed him. We noticed that he had a whole group of shady friends around the bar, checking surroundings being most likely there to collect stolen items and make them vanish quick.
I told him to get away from us, he started to be threatening to both of us, and after a heated exchange he eventually left, only few meters away to another table, trying to pull the same trick. We kept an eye on him to make sure he was not stealing from them, called 112, …
People (including the knob cursing at me, while there was enough space to pass anyway) think the asphalt is for cyclists, but this is not true. The paved paths are not exclusively for cyclists. Pedestrians are allowed to walk anywhere in the park, including on the asphalt paths. Cyclists need to be aware of and respectful toward pedestrians.
Unfortunately, many cyclists don’t seem to know this and get extremely annoyed when they encounter people walking on “their” path. I hope this post gives some more awareness as I’m guessing 90% of the people don’t know this.
While Amsterdam is loosing more and more independent shops (to online shopping and real estate prices), there are some absolute gems - and I’d love to learn about a few more. Unique shops that are (also internationally) outstanding for their field, with a personal vision and commited owners and staffs. Love to collect some here, as these tend to be fantastic place to learn more! Think places which people living abroad will talk about for their uniqueness/personal selection. Are there any local producers of physical goods still around? Please leave a short description too. I’ll start:
- Architecture en Natura
Top-notch architecture, urbanity, environment and craft bookshop
- Kookboekwinkel
Oldest cookbook shop in the world, recently renewed with fresh energy. Great selection for both popular and niche audiences
- San Seriffe
Small-scale publishing art and culture bookshop
- BoekieWoekie

Now you can play this while waiting 2 hours for your tosti!
Was in the line for passport control at Schiphol.
Line was huge and this guy and his son(?) just try to skip it. Told him the line was at the end of the hall and he just shushed me. I asked him if he didn’t want to wait and he just kept telling me to move forward.
People, when you see this behavior, call it out. Don’t let assholes get this comfortable. Don’t let them ruin it for the rest of us

The teen was on his way to a delivery when he crossed a tram rail from the grass (illegal cross) and the scooter slipped, sending him to his instant death. Thoughts to his friends and family. Please if you’re a scooter driver out there - and I say this because I work in the restaurant business with scooter delivery riders - please please ride carefully. Getting an order delivered 5 minutes early is not worth the potential sacrifice of your life, please follow the rules and regulations on the road.
