I’ve never posted on here, however I thought I’d try it for a change. Recently, me and my partner went to Amsterdam for a weekend and had an amazing time. It’s such a beautiful place and the people are very friendly, there’s tons of things to do and there’s a nice buzz to the place.
During our trip, I lost my ID (driving licence), I think it slipped out of my jeans I was wearing. I stored my ID in the small pocket inside the main pocket of the jeans (not sure what it’s called) and the ID was protruding out the whole time. Hence why it most likely fell as we were walking around.
Anyway, 2 weeks later, I received a letter in the post. To my surprise, someone had found my ID and sent it back to me off of their own back! Although to some, it may seem insignificant, this made my day completely! The only down side to this, is that they didn’t leave any contact details for me to show my appreciation :(
If you’re reading this and you went out of your way to perform this act of kindness, …
So far, it prevents the mess in the neighborhood. But mainly because I assumed that people just don’t know where the next container is, or are they just too lazy to look for it? But by default, nobody wants to make a mess. That’s a good realization!
Disclaimer: I checked the container every day, but I was away for 2 weeks in October, and don’t know if people followed the sticker instructions :)
Edit: “This is not London!” Many people in the comments are angry that the sticker is in English. There are 3 reasons:
1. I was checking the names on the boxes left near containers, and they were mainly foreigners
2. So making it only in Dutch didn’t make sense
3. It’s hard to make a functional sticker/instruction design in multiple languages - it’s visually not so straightforward in a world where people have 1 second attention span
Booked a timeslot for 11am as I had a 2pm departure. Arrived much earlier than I expected. Reached the security line at 10am and found a fairly long queue - would have taken about 30 - 45 minutes to get through. There was absolutely no one trying to get through the prebooked timeslot lane which was empty. I thought maybe you couldn’t change the time once you booked it, but I opened the Schipol app and realised it could be changed. Switched it to 10am and walked ahead of everyone else. Please book this and avoid standing in line - even if you don’t anticipate long lines. I can’t imagine so many people standing in that line and not realising they could just open the website and book a slot and skip the line.
Hopefully another nail in the coffin for these horrible things: https://nltimes.nl/2025/12/05/utrecht-city-council-backs-plan-ban-fatbikes-city
I was alredy getting used to the siren outside, I was sleeping through it, but then, ON MY PHONE TOO ? I genuinely thought the siren wasn’t a test anymore, I EVEN GOT OUT OF THE HOUSE IN MY PAJAMAS to see what was happening. That was embarassing. Now let me sleep.
EDIT
For everyone mad : -I work night shifts -I don’t speak dutch -I don’t listen to the radio/TV on a daily basis -I got here recently -I got the survival instincts of a potato
In AH online and two Albert Heijn stores I visited this week, the AH own brand dishwasher tablets were out of stock. What is crazy is that the alternatives are like STUPIDLY pricier. Not 2x or 3x but event next cheapest alternatives are over 5x the price per tablet. How is it possible?
Didn’t check other stores yet though..
