Ik fietste gisteravond in Amsterdam op mijn normale fiets. Ik rij dus op een fietspad met een voetpad aan de rechterkant en een autoweg aan de linkerkant. Ik wil op een gegeven moment links afslaan bij een kruising. Ik ga dus iets naar rechts om mijn fiets te keren en zo zicht te krijgen op eventuele fietser en automobilisten. Op dat moment komt er een man op een elektrische tenway fietst mij rechts over het voetpad in halen. Hij kan nog maar net afremmen en om mij heen fietsen. Hij racet door en roept nog “Absolutely mad”. Waarop ik boos wordt en hem uitscheld omdat hij het blijkbaar normaal vindt om rechts in te halen over notabene een voetpad.

Ik ben het helemaal zat hoe mensen tegenwoordig fietsen, zeker met de opkomst van elektrische fietsen. Niemand gebruikt meer de bel, denken dat ze voorrang moeten krijgen omdat ze elektrisch fietsen, fietsen in het midden van het fietspad en halen dus zelfs rechts over voetpaden in. Ze moeten maar een rijbewijs gaan invoeren voor …

So, i’m going to do some volunteering in Netherland (ESC) and i’m really hyped it’s my first time going to another country of EU and my second time going to another country at all!

So i’m a bit curious as to what should i know before getting there or just what should i get ! Which food i should try first for exemple (yeah i love eating).

And bonus question: what are like the cheap thing to eat in netherland since my food allowance won’t be really high (something around 200 euro)

Genuine question, as I just had the pleasure of meeting a lovely Brit, that had been living here for 12 years, who basically expected everyone to speak English with him.

I’m not talking about people who are currently learning Dutch. If you’ve moved here recently and are taking Dutch lessons, even if you’re still struggling with it, good for you. I’m talking about people who have been here for 5, 10+ years and still rely almost entirely on English because they know Dutch people will switch.

I’m Dutch and English is my second language. I speak it well, but I didn’t grow up with it. Like most Dutch people, I had years of English lessons at school and countless hours of exposure before I could actually use it comfortably. And even now, English is probably the foreign language I enjoy speaking the least.

So I wonder if English-speaking expats and immigrants actually realise that we are the ones adapting to them, rather than English being some neutral …

I am mostly addressing Dutch parents. My house overlooks a 30km/h street. It is not a busy street and many families live on it. What I see everyday from my living room is absurd. Tenths of children with average age around 12 on fatbikes, no helmets of course,driving erratically both on pavement and on street. Without exaggeration there is minimum a near miss incident every day with a car. And again I emphasize that my street is not a busy street on a big city. Ten days ago I almost hit two girls that thought would be normal to cross an avenue vertically from a side road without even slightly braking just 200m away from my place. It took me 2 days to recover from shock of what it could have been.Thank God my car is equipped with good brakes and has active brake assist with cross-traffic function. What are these parents exactly thinking giving their children such means of transportation? Can a Dutch parent explain me where all this madness derives from? And please don’t tell me …

Has this country never heard of a slash through sign?

If you don’t live in NL- a round sign with a red border means the thing inside the circle is prohibited. In most parts of the world this would seem to emphasize yes do this action!

Insult to injury- the sign of the walking person with an arrow was recently added to encourage people to cross the street but arguably emphasis even more that the path is a walking path given the arrow placement.

For those following this mystery the last few days, police in both Amsterdam and Vancouver are looking into the whether an Amsterdam man who lost the ability to communicate three years ago is the same person as a man who went missing in Vancouver over 30 years ago.

Dutch police said earlier this week that an unknown man was hospitalized in Amsterdam in 2023 and has lost almost all ability to communicate since suffering a brain injury. His nicknames include “Lucky,” “John,” and “Chris the Canadian.” His resemblance to John Russel Kenny, missing since 1993, was brought to the attention of police in both countries.

Kipgehaktballetjes with some sort of chutney.

Not a complaint at all. Despite the looks and the funny little amount of food, it tasted quite good.

The staff is friendlier and more attentive than most of high end hotels I’ve been at. I’m pretty sure if I ask for more they’d gladly bring.

Also, it seems that I have access to broodjie kaas fruits and kwark ²⁴⁄₇.

I was on a direct train from Rotterdam Central to Schiphol, everything going perfectly… until someone decided to light up. It triggered a full lockdown, and our train ended up stuck on the tracks for almost an hour. Railway technicians had to come out to inspect and reset the system before anything could move again. Eventually the train was sent all the way back to Rotterdam.

I grabbed a taxi but still missed the flight.

KLM rebooked us for free, which was genuinely lovely of them. ❤️

I really hope nobody decides to smoke on the plane tomorrow 😂

It was last week Wednesday about 6 pm, one hour before the eclips . I was trying to get the train to Amsterdam ( Sloterdijk ), transfer from the train Zandvoort aan zee at station Haarlem.

The train rolled too far in front and all travelers needed to run, there was just one minute left to take that train and I needed to take that train. I was just in time, still don’t know what happened but suddenly I came down between the train and the platform.

I was stuck between the train and the platform, I was deep in it and in shock. A couple of seconds looked like an hour.
Didn’t know how much time left in that minute and I was really panicking.

I couldn’t haul myself onto the platform anymore. And then suddenly arms were there to haul me upwards from that scary situation thinking this was my very last minute in life.

I want to thank so so so very much that gentleman and other people who did resqued me.
It was a traumatic experience but thank God I am alive and I know my body will be …

I was attacked and badly beaten last Thursday evening - the 6th August around 22:51. I was walking home after a lovely evening and was near the bottom of Kalverstraat near the Munt Toren when it happened. I blacked out (perhaps luckily) and came to in an ambulance.

I have a fractured nose, severely sprained knee and am covered in lumps and bruises all over my face. Nothing was stolen, I still had my phone on my wrist strap, so it sadly seems like some form of hate crime. I am a 53 year old Caucasian woman with short hair. The short hair has often led to people calling me a lesbian. So much wrong with that in itself, but makes me wonder if it was anti Pride hate.

Hoping there are some witnesses that may be able to help and I would also like to thank whoever called the emergency services at 23:06.

This was reported to the police on Friday 7th August, but I have not heard from them yet and am concerned that witnesses may forget and CCTV may be deleted. Therefore posting this. Fingers …

But the extra 3 seconds it took for the red lights to dim were too much for pretty much everyone as they hurriedly stepped on the gass as soon as the barriers lifted.

There was a guy that found my wallet in Utrecht Centraal, tried to give it to me while I’m on the train and the train started leaving🥲I was panicking so much and was contacting the NS klantenservice the whole time.

This sweet guy held on to it and didn’t leave the station for over an hour. I had zero hours of sleep that day and I couldn’t even react properly because I really wasn’t expecting to see him still waiting in the station😭😭

It’s been 2 months already but it keeps bothering me that I just took my wallet and left without getting a number :(( I’m so so grateful to this day, you really made me believe the world is still a good place 🥹🥹🥹 I really hope this post can get to him!! Please dm me if you know him/if you’re the guy!!!

I live in Limburg, and every time I do my groceries at Albert Heijn or Jumbo I’m struck by how poor the overall experience feels compared with supermarkets just across the border in Belgium.

The assortment is relatively limited, prices are high, and self-service checkouts seem to come with extremely frequent “random” checks. You scan and bag everything yourself, yet somehow the whole experience still feels less convenient and more distrustful.

Then I drive to a Carrefour hypermarket in Belgium and it feels like entering a completely different retail culture: huge assortment, much more choice between brands and price levels, larger quantities, more non-food products, and generally the feeling that I can decide what I want to buy rather than choosing between a handful of options selected for me.

And it’s not just Carrefour. Even Lidl and Aldi across the border often feel like they have a considerably broader assortment than their Dutch equivalents. That is what surprises me most: even …

Just noticed that Trustpilot has hidden bunq’s public rating and placed a Consumer Warning on its profile.

The warning says:

“Breach of guidelines”

“We’ve removed a number of fake reviews for this company.”

Clicking through, Trustpilot explains that Consumer Warnings are issued when a business breaches its guidelines and remain in place until the misbehaviour has stopped and a reasonable amount of time has passed.

What I can’t find anywhere is what bunq actually did.

Does anyone know what this relates to?

Could it be fake positive reviews, biased review invitations, misuse of the review-flagging process, or something else entirely?

Has anyone had a Trustpilot review of bunq challenged or removed?

I’m genuinely curious because Trustpilot doesn’t seem to specify which of its business guidelines bunq breached. If anyone has any insight into what happened here, it’d be interesting to hear. I have never seen Trustpilot do …

I realized recently I’m not going to restaurants in Amsterdam anymore. Not because of the off putting prices, but because I can’t remember a single time where the hospitality experience contributed to lifting the evening. We come and try to have a good time in spite of the cold, rude or awkward service.

Where I’m from, the interaction with the staff, how welcoming and lighthearted they are, the attentive service, often contribute to lighten the mood and create a memorable evening.

I love Amsterdam, I just wanted to share why I stopped going to restaurants and cafés.

If they can’t make garbage containers that every junkie can open, I’d rather they stopped paying statiegeld. Surely this is worse for the environment than the uptick in recycling.

Hey!
Just got back home and noticed that front of my apartment got sprayed with water(windows and front door along with front door(a little bit of water got into the house) with this note slipped through mail slot.
I’m 100% sure I have not requested that, so I’m quite concerned about it. The note says that costs will be collected soon. Anyone faced that kind of sit? (I checked the number and can’t find any company associated with that number)

I (45F), moved to the Netherlands almost 3 years ago, leaving my amazing job back home, for love. My partner had moved here for work and then I followed along with my teenage son. Both my partner and son have taken to this place like fish to water. But I have struggled, especially wrt my career. I have almost two decades HR transformation experience, even serving as Chief of Staff in a consulting firm as my last role before I moved here. I’ve found the job market very narrow for non Dutch speakers. I did manage to find something though not at the same level as I was in my career. Unfortunately, early this year my entire department got laid off and since then I’ve been in the job trenches again. It’s been especially harrowing this time around. I’ve only had 4 interview calls in 6 months, with each of them proceeding until the final round and leading to rejections, despite preparing for days, mock interviews, and anticipating all the questions that might be asked. …

Me and my partner just got back from Amsterdam, went over on the eurostar from London Euston. Wanted to share my experience as a powerchair user incase it helps anyone else planning a trip.

Travel

The London to Brussels legs were great both ways. But Brussels to Amsterdam they put us on an older train with another wheelchair user, no way to turn round or get to a toilet. Felt like a total afterthought.

Getting around the city

Amsterdam is a genuinely beautiful city but its rough going in an electric chair. Cobbles everywhere, bikes dumped on every path, and people will just walk straight into your path or push infront of you without a second thought.

The metro claims to be accessible but I had to rush to be able to get out due to gaps and uneven platforms, and at one point my front castors got stuck and my partner had to lift me out, this was in the disabled carriage. It ended up damaging my chair.

Trams were basically unusable for me. Buses were actually really good though, …

I was outside the Toren hotel on the canal, which is a nice hotel in a decently nice part of town. It was 6:30am and it was bright out. I saw a guy hanging around us and figured he was a local enjoying the morning and thought nothing of it. He walked away and we kept waiting for our Uber.

Then we hear a blood curdling scream where he walked, and I think he was trying to rape a girl who was just walking with her bag down the street.

She was struggling, screaming, and I ran at the scene screaming for him to get off of her. He did and started running. She was screaming for 30 seconds before I could get to her and she was right by houses, nobody came out to help her in a reasonable amount of time with her screaming at the top of her lungs.

He didn’t try to take her bag at all, it looked like a sexual assault. Careful if travelling alone here.

Otherwise it was the time of my life, but that’s how the trip ended and then I got in an Uber and went home. Bad vibes, j might be …

It is genuinely getting tiring to see posts from people who want to move to the Netherlands mainly because Dutch salaries look high compared with those in their home country.

Yes, the salaries are higher. But so are the costs. Housing is extremely expensive, childcare is expensive, groceries are not cheap, and taxes take a considerable share of your income. A Dutch salary does not automatically give you a luxurious Dutch life.

I understand wanting a better future. The Netherlands is still a country with plenty of opportunities. But some things look much better from abroad than they actually are. Without secure housing and a realistic budget, moving here can become a financial disaster very quickly.

What also annoys me is the number of low-effort posts asking whether someone can live comfortably in Amsterdam on a random salary without mentioning rent, savings, family situation or lifestyle. Do people not research anything before planning an international move?

So today I was heading to my train, and when I was downstairs, I heard such a loud bang like the train crashed or something. As I went upstairs, I saw an intercity parked at a station where normally only sprinters stop. There weren’t really any people on the platform, and I thought it was just nothing, so I decided to take a closer look, and as I kept walking, I saw blood and something which I first thought was a heart but probably just skin, and then I saw a person under the train.

The corpse was dismembered to an extent; it was such a weird, overwhelming feeling when I saw the person lying there.

I have never in my life seen a dead person, and there I am staring at one. The people were looking at me, not knowing what was going on inside the train, and I was just staring in horror. The more I looked, the more things I noticed, like shoes off on the platform and the phone on the other track and some blood on the platform I was on. All those things are just making me think more …

I left my apartment in Amsterdam at 4:55 pm, cycled to Sloterdijk station in 10 minutes, took a train to Schipol for another 10 minutes and by 5:30 pm I already passed through security. Just wanted to vent a positive experience of living in this beautiful country. Cheers :)

Need help finding the location of mine and my wifes first kiss

As the title shows, me and my wife had our first kiss in amsterdam while I was travelling for work and she was visiting family around 4 years ago, We had gone on what was supposed to be a 2 hour date that ended up as a 12 hour date and culminated in our first kiss sat in this random mini park while eating a mcdonalds.

All I remember about the park was that it was very small, Had a set of swings, was around central amsterdam, benches to sit on and was tucked inbetween rows of houses, one of the walls next to the park had graffiti of animals also

Hello there!

Earlier today someone placed this notice on the corridor inside my apartment complex’s entry hall. It is not known if it was placed by someone who actually lives there or someone that was able to get in.

There were cases of a couple of delivery pakketjes being stolen previously, but not sure how this qualifies.

Complex has 70% Dutch owners, 30% foreign immigrants like myself.

And what the hell is that about the salt? I sent a message to the company asking if this is just a troll mixed with hate, or if it’s actual corporate policy from them. Any one ever seen anything like this?

Reminded me of EDIT weird racial/us-vs-them stuff. At least I got a good laugh out of it by calling my GF a volksverrader and a bloedverrader by being with me, a terrifying non-European that just buys the cheapest possible salt available and does not drink oatmilk or matcha.

We found this suspiciously tame duck in front of a chinese restaurant, that ate out of my hand. I wouldn’t have wondered except earlier in the day we saw a “lost duck” poster (with like, a black and white outline of a duck, no actual photo, I took to be a joke or publicity stunt). Plus, wild ducks don’t usually have white patches.

It’s probably a coincidence, and it’s just the restaurant’s somewhat morbid mascot, but… at worst I posted a cute duck pic.

Edit: she’s been identified by locals as a regular of that dock, and the poster is guerrilla marketing for a restaurant. Thanks to the redditors who identified them, and to the mods who fast tracked approval of this thread in case there really had been a lost pet 💜

Good afternoon everyone, I just want to start off by saying that the idea of this post is to share my PERSONAL experience.
I have lived in the Netherlands since 2018 and came originally for my studies (EU citizen, female). For everyone who will ask: I speak fluent Dutch, have a Dutch job with a salary a little bit higher than average, and I have both Dutch and international friends.

My quality of life decreased the moment I finished my studies and started working. My salary is high enough that I don’t qualify for most subsidies, but at the same time, my net salary is just enough to survive with the increasing cost of living. I cannot imagine living with roommates until I marry, as finding a studio in the Randstad area below 1500 euros per month is almost impossible. I am aware of the housing crisis, and unfortunately, I know a lot of people still living with their parents, or being married and unable to move out with their spouse.

I was taking a somewhat late night walk in the neighborhood last week - maybe around 12:30 on Tuesday or Wednesday night. Turned the corner and just about ran into a couple leaned up on that small utility box, having loud and admirably enthusiastic sex.

I wasn’t quite sure how to react - I mean, I was less than a meter away when I realized what was going on. In the end, I just walked away down a different street. I do feel sorry for my neighbors, though. But in the future, what do you do?

A) Ignore them, give them a wide berth, and leave them to it

B) Acknowledge them, walk on by

C) Cheer them on and give the guy a hearty, encouraging slap on the ass

Hi all! As a fun side-project I built a small web map of my own city, Groningen, where you can watch the buses glide around in real time, a cute little isometric toy-city. I enjoy looking at it on a second monitor :) Today I decided to try adding a few more cities, and Utrecht was one of them, so I figured I’d share it here too:

You can click buses, trams and stops for live departure times, follow a vehicle around, and switch cities from the panel in the corner.

Amsterdam (after Utrecht) got a bonus the other cities didnt: trams! They look a little janky, but I think they still look kinda cute :)

- The settings (cogwheel) menu contains options to render buildings in greyscale (for visibility), a performance mode (for slower/mobile devices - it makes things look a little worse but still faithful to the idea), some chill music and a few other toggles.

A chain smoker has moved into an apartment on the ground floor directly below me. Needless to say, the smoke is creating an uncomfortable living situation for me. I cannot keep the windows open without stinking up my place. This is doubly annoying in this heatwave. He seems to be smoking from early in the morning until after midnight. I have set an alarm to open windows at 01:00 and close at 07:00, but that interrupts my sleep.
What can I do without coming across as an annoying Karen neighbour? How can I raise the subject that his smoking is lessening the quality of life for his neighbours. I do feel sorry for people who have reached the point in life that they just sit and smoke all day long.

I do the same but for places that flat out refuse to serve you tap water. We went to a pizza restaurant recently and ordered a few pizzas and beers and wine. Like having water with my meal for digestion and to keep hydrated whilst drinking alcohol. Refused to serve tap water and came up with some feeble excuse. The food was good, but wouldn’t return because of this. I left a review on Google maps and the owner went off on a big rant.

It is well known nowadays for the detrimental effects of bottled water and tap water is perfectly fine and drinkable in Amsterdam, it is about time it became mandatory to serve it like is the case in other countries. Is this a pet peeve of anyone else.

Pretty much the same view every day for the last 5 years or so: municipality cannot fix the bin, people cannot put their rubbish into bin (making birds happy), residents have parties and in the public yard but dont bother to clean, dumping the rubbish onto kids playground…

Anyone else experienced male teens, guessing around ¹⁴⁄₁₅ throwing sizable rocks at people from their bikes? it happened to us walking back from the cinema Friday.

We’ve also experienced them spitting on us and others the last couple years.

there seems to be a bit of a pattern of male violence in the park perpetrated by this age range.

Seriously, this American nonsense will only continue unless we make it loudly clear we don’t want this.

Bonus points if you take a photo of the tipping screen on the payment terminal and upload it to Google Maps when making a review; it’s harder for the owner to deny.

edit: obviously nothing against horeca staff and I love the idea of tipping the Dutch way, voluntarily. but I like the idea of 1-star reviews because it sends a clear message to the business owner, and it gives other users a way to quickly see before their visit if this surprise is waiting for them

It’s hot, we’re all sweating more, so please take extra care of your hygiene. A daily shower especially in the morning goes a long way.

And please don’t try to cover body odor with just perfume or body spray. Sweat + perfume isn’t a substitute for a shower.

Holland2Stay Eindhoven: Elevators broken for months. Today, a lady fell on the stairs at the 7th floor and the fire brigade had to evacuate her.

As a resident at one of the Holland2Stay buildings in Eindhoven I am posting this to raise urgent awareness about the downright dangerous living conditions here.

For months, the elevators in our building have been broken. Countless residents have submitted complaints, opened tickets, and warned management that making everyone take the stairs up to high floors was a major accident waiting to happen. Our complaints were completely ignored.

Today, the worst-case scenario happened. A lady fell down the stairs at the 7th floor. Because the elevators are non-functional, paramedics couldn’t safely bring her down, and the fire brigade had to be called in with an aerial platform truck to evacuate her through the exterior.

A big shout out to the people who stopped to help me when I was hit by a moped when I was out on my race bike in Amsterdam West.

I really can’t thank you enough - whoever you are - thanks so much for stopping!

I was unconscious and sprawled on the ground, and ended up in the back of an ambulance so didn’t get a chance to say thanks at the time. I vaguely remember 2 guys who stopped, wrapped me in a jacket, called the police and ambulance, and waited until they arrived. I don’t know who you are, but whoever you are, you made a big difference to me that day.

To the motorbike rider who was breathalysed and arrested for causing an accident whilst drunk… Thanks at least for stopping. I guess you’re a youngster given your mum turned up. I am sure having a criminal record, losing your licence, and struggling to get insurance again will make your life more difficult. I hope this incident will cause you to reflect …

My colleague just divorced. She’s now sharing a two-bedroom flat with her two kids and a friend, because her salary alone can’t cover rent, alimony is nonexistent, and child support is minimal. Wait time for social housing in her region: 15-19 years.

Two new grads on my team still live with their parents because they can’t afford to rent or buy in Amsterdam. Wait time there: almost 20 years.

Meanwhile:
• My neighbor has had his social flat for 20+ years (since he was a student), pays ~€500/month, and owns a summer house in Spain, two BMW, and takes 2-3 international trips a year.
• My manager earns over €6,000 net/month and still pays just €800/month for a social housing unit he locked in years ago.

The people the system was built for wait their entire working lives for a spot. The people who clearly don’t need it anymore just… stay, indefinitely, because nothing pushes them out once their income changes.

How the fuck is this fair?

Hey I know this is unnecessary but I just keep seeing so much hatred about the Netherlands online and specifically people complaining about the Netherlands on Reddit.

All I wanted to say is that I visited the Netherlands for a week last year and I absolutely fucking loved it. It was one the of the most peaceful and calm I have ever felt in my life.

Yes it was incredibly expensive but everything within the Netherlands was perfect. I love riding bikes and it was a dream come true that the entire country is connected by bike paths I rode north east south and west even riding from Amsterdam to Utrecht amongst visiting so many quaint little villages.

I loved the beautiful rolling fields and cool castles/ old buildings. The designs and serenity of the suburbs alongside the canals were incredible. I wish to live there, just passing by it almost felt like a utopia.

People were very friendly to me but I think it’s because they thought I was Dutch. I see lots of people saying Dutch people …
