With WWDC roughly 1 month away a little discussion posts about new features you want to see in the next Shortcuts version like it has been done in the past (1 ,2)
And yes, I’m aware that Apple doesn’t read this. It’s just for fun (and disappointment afterwards).
I start with the more obvious ones (aside from bugfixes):
- better automation: every automation trigger should have an “ask before running” toggle and there should be additional ones like trigger based on notification( which would e.g. allow to interact with other messenger apps) or an option to assign it to calendar events.
- better system integration in general: more system features should be exposed e.g. full control over alarms (edit & alarms) or more actions for Mail
- variables in Siri commands: A way to run a shortcut as single command with a variable input instead of asking for it as a second step.

Through Shortery, I automate my shortcuts.
Turning on Focus modes based on the current Mac app I am using.
I’ve also created a shortcut in which when I quit safari, it kills any leftover cache processes. I also have one that auto cleans my downloads folder every week.
To make my mac less distracting at late night, I have reduced motion and transparency turn on when I use it late, and turned off when it’s morning.
Also created App menu that appears when I connect my AirPods to show either Audio apps/Video/Communication (Amazon Music, Podcasts, TV, Netflix, FaceTime, Zoom)
Just curious to see what others use Shortery and macOS Shortcuts for, and I thought that this would be a great discussion for advanced use cases.
Here’s my shortcut to set contact picture as Instagram profile picture. To use it, you just have to set Instagram username in “Notes” section of the contact, and it should work!
I know someone already did that in that subreddit, but it wasn’t working anymore for me, so I’m just posting my version, which should be lighter because I made my own backend.
Is there a way to set up an automation that will auto reply to text messages that come in when my “Migraine” Focus is running: “AngryBecauseMornings has a migraine right now. They will respond when they feel better.”
how enamored so many people were with Elizabeth because of her voice? I think it’s George Schultz, her biggest backer, who is quoted saying that as soon as he heard her voice, he did a double take. I would have too because she sounds like a clown. And her personality seems so weird and offputting. I guess whatever drew people to her just doesn’t come across in a podcast. Anyway, I’m pretty late to the game but had to share.
Pretty much every ad for a podcast with comedy hosts I’ve heard is so unfunny and filled with cringe that it feels like an immediate “remember to never listen to whatever this podcast was called”.
Is this just a wide net thing or are there any that you’ve found actually compelling?
Edit: i don’t mean the reads by the hosts of the show you’re listening to haha. I mean when the podcast you’re listening to goes to break and you hear the hosts of some show try to sell you on it.
I normally only recommend this podcast when someone asks about history podcasts and I’ve never started a thread for one but this week’s episode was about the battle of Hastings in 1066 was something else. It’s a long one but so well researched and the author puts so much enthusiasm into it. It was one of the best podcasts I’ve ever listened to.
I have absolutely no connection with the podcast and I don’t donate (even though I’ve donated to others) but I had to let people know about this.
BTW I’ve been listening for many years and we’re only at 1066. This is one of my core podcasts I’ll never drop, my only problem is that I don’t always take it all in and I can’t remember even a 10th of the stories. It was already a good podcast but this episode is one of the top podcasts I’ve ever heard.
ln a world brimming with misinformation, Wendy has been doing an incredible job of fighting against it. Her podcasts are always incredibly well-sited, she is always very open when she needs to make any corrections, and I just wanted to give her credit for that.
Listening to her is a breath of fresh air because I know I can trust her. These days, that’s much needed.
I know the last season was a bit underwhelming but the show always still seems popular in this sub. I’ll probably still listen but last year left a lot to be desired. The editing on some of those episodes was rooooough.
They released a teaser this past Wednesday and the first episode is live in Apple Podcasts if you’re a member of Tenderfoot+. But if you’re like me and don’t subscribe, you’ll have to wait a week.
I couldn’t find a valid rss feed on podcast addict so I ended up searching out the first episode, downloading it and subsequently searching for episode 2, 3, 4, etc since I also couldn’t find a list of all 147 (as of April 2022) episodes.
These are long, detailed episodes which include short legal clips of almost every song Andrew Hickey mentions. He mentions many songs each episode not just the one in the title.
I’m up to episode 9 (and listened to 147 as well) and I haven’t heard any ad reads or self promotion. He asks for Patreon donations once each episode. He also includes transcriptions of each episode if you just want to read, but of course listening is the way because you get the clips. I never listen to podcasts a 1.0 speed but this one is much better at that because 9 of 10 the songs he references are unfamiliar to me and it is easier to appreciate the songs at normal speed.
I heard about this podcast on a shoestring organized crime history podcast …
Can be anything
Edit: not me screenshotting every comment knowing damn well i can only afford 2-3 books max 💀
I want something that focuses on surviving shortly after it happens(anywhere between a week to a couple years after). I don’t care if it’s zombies, disease or something else. I’d like it to focus on a group of people with little to no romance, if possible. Thank you in Advance!
Edit: Thank all of you for the cool suggestions! Now I just gotta get started…
I’ve never seen a book like this. Most sci-fi either focusses on far off different worlds and cultures and their interaction or involves invasions of earth.
Lets say we were to discover a planet with life in contemporary time and someone gets to travel there, imagine how mysterious it would be? I suppose an “abduction” story might also have the same effect but I’ve also never seen one of those?
So basically I would like to read a book where a person our group people from earth go to an alien planet for the first time and we get to experience their awe and “wonder” at the way this alien society lives, the animal life, the technology etc
The closest thing I can think of might be Rendezvous with Rama (although there the civilisation is gone - but the sense of “wonder” and “alienness” is awesome) or perhaps some Rick and Morty episodes, or even elements of Peter Pan?
Thanks :)
Yeah! I love Jane Austen, the Brontës, etc, but they always write about rich people or the middle class, and I am interested on how “poor” people courted each other yknow. Thank you!
Pretty much the title. Something that makes you go “wait a minute..”. I would prefer less characters if possible since I already have a hard time keeping up with normal stories lol. Edit: or a fantasy book about dreaming
I’m not worried about the exact length, I would just like a huge book that makes you feel very accomplished for finishing it. I want something that I can become completely engrossed in and not be able to put it down.
Factorio, Rimworld, Minecraft, Terraria were great too.
Edit: Thanks for all your suggestions!
I just discovered as I was browsing through your recommendations that there is a steam tag “villain protagonist” which has a lot of games in line with what I was looking for. I thought I’d throw that out there if you guys are also looking for similar games.
Also, I just found this funny but the top selling game in that category is Untitled Goose Game. Wp to the person that recommended that here lol.
like cute starting out games and not like horrorwise with lore and stuff no like turns into a fully horror game, similar to petscop where it suddenly turns from a cute game about collecting pets to a full on horror theme.
Hello everyone,
I am a souls veteran love Elden Ring’s exploration, meaningful loot, and combat. Sometimes though I just want to play something and feel like I am becoming increasingly stronger sort of like WoW.
I’ve already played all of the Souls games and most soulsborne clones. Again I am not looking for something difficult but more of a fun action RPG. Co-op is strongly preferred.
So basically whenever I search up a game that fits this category I get Skyrim, Witcher (fantasy rpg) or things like minecraft and terraria (open world, sandbox). I’ve yet to find a game that kinda combines all these elements together.
I am looking for something with the fantasy setting of Witcher, but without the main character being it’s own character (so like Skyrim where YOU create the character). The open world, do whatever you want from the go game play of minecraft (but unlike minecraft, this world is populated with characters and factions and cities etc. etc.)
A good way to think about it would be an MMORPG style, but centered around single player. Basically, load up, make a character (whatever you want). Spawn into the fantasy world and do whatever you want within the world that’s been given to you.
Thanks!
Game where you just explore biome and find animals. Photograph them. Like red dead redemption without the story. Just exploring wildlife. And interacting
Edit: I am so overwhelmed with all the responses. I will check out each and every one of them. I didn’t really know these. I play red dead every now and then in free roam. And take pictures of birds and animals. That is all I do for hours on end. And was wondering if there are more games that do this. Thank you all.
