As I’ve teased yesterday, here is the shortcut to detect car models by image!
Before you install it please read this post though:
I didn’t expect it to gain that much interest. I thought it’d be of interest for some car guys and not such a broad amount of people.
Like I commented under the post, this shortcut uses the carnet.ai API. The API has limited use though. By default, this shortcut uses a free tier API key that I’ve created - that means it’s limited to 100 requests a day. Sooo.. I’ll expect these 100 requests to be used up within a short amount of time, even if everyone who showed interest only tests it with 1 picture today.
So please be aware that you probably have to wait a few days until this becomes usable (and even then it depends on everyone not being a dick and check 30 pictures a day)
See it as a testable template that still needs a personal API key to work reliably, rather than a 100% working shortcut out of the box. If you need/want to use it regularly, please …
While some of my shortcuts are basic convenience, I have a few that have a high wow factor. I’d love to hear yours!
I made a shortcut to set your iOS home screen wallpaper as the NASA Image of the Day. You can schedule so you get a fresh image every day.
https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/5759e63a6a7e4988ab15764360cb6a4d
Instructions for scheduling:http://edtechchris.com/2019/11/17/automate-tasks-on-a-schedule-in-ios-with-the-shortcuts-app/
You’ll want to diverge from the instructions at step 7, at which point you should search for “run shortcut” and then search/select the “NASA Image of the Day Home Screen Wallpaper” shortcut and uncheck “ask before running” and “notify when run.”
It gets the NASA IotD RSS feed and then grabs the image URL from the first item and sets it as your home screen. It could be easily modified to grab images from other RSS feeds. Someone probably already did this, and probably better, but my quick searches didn’t immediately turn up anything.
EDIT: Here’s a wifi only version modified by donthavenick to …
I’ve been trying for a bit to figure out how to create calendar events I could share with people as a form of invite.
Surprisingly I have found this feature to be absent from iOS and routinehub. Heck, while making the shortcut I couldn’t find a website to do this either.
(If there is a super easy way to do this that I’m missing please let me know because I find it wild I had to make this shortcut)
After some time I had made a shortcut that lets you fill out some mostly optional information, of which the shortcut then uses to create a .ics file before finally returning the iCal event to you—with the option to share it the share sheet.
Hopefully some other people find this useful as well :)
I just got the most wonderful note from a listener and it just made my day. If you’re a long-time listener to a podcast, take the time to reach out and let your favorite hosts know that you’re enjoying their show. Download stats are nice, but that one nice email was worth 10,000 downloads.
Just send them a quick email, tweet, or whatever to let them know you’re listening and you appreciate their work. Many of us do this for no money, so a little human kindness is about all we can expect.
That is all. Have a great day, folks!
Hi, idk if this is allowed, new to this sub. I’ve been trying to do a full clean of my house for months but can only do so when I’m super wrapped up in a gripping podcast series. Problem is, I can’t seem to find one to obsess over right now.
Podcasts i’ve previously been addicted to: - Welcome to Night Vale - Stuff you should know - Grownups read things they wrote as kids - My dad wrote a porno - Russell brand under the skin - The mysterious secrets of uncle berties botenarium - Off menu podcast - Mum says my memoir is a lie - Kermode and Mayo’s film review - Hamish and Andy podcast - Syd and Olivia talk shit - The guilty feminist - Those conspiracy guys (lollllll) - Casefile - Guys we fucked - Dan Carlin hardcore history
Looking for podcasts where they take a situation or person and do a deep dive into it. If possible I enjoy longer episodes if there’s any with those
This Bloomberg bombshell is worth a read, but might not surprise many of you.
From the article: “Since 2020, according to Chappell, Guestio has paid out more than $300,000 to podcasters and guests. In just the past six months, four podcasters on the platform have made more than $20,000 from appearance fees, including one who took in $50,000.”
One of my favorite podcasts was just two best friends chatting about random stuff depending on what was going on in their lives—childhood stories, their experiences having their first kids, their favorite holiday traditions, etc. It was literally just like hanging out with two of my friends. I loved that it was a little more mature, but lighthearted listening vs hearing about like…college girl life and tinder experiences. I’m a little old for that now haha I’m not sure where to even start looking for something like that.
Any good podcasts out there that focus on dealing with depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts etc?
Thanks
I’m looking to reading more literature outside english.
Want a book that I can be completely pulled into and taken to that world for a few days. Have some sh*t going on in my family, that I just need to escape for awhile… My favorite genres are magical Realism, horror, supernatural Thrillers, southern grit lit and some fantasy if it isn’t kings and queens trope. I love other realms, other worlds, creatures. Also love character based fiction based on characters who have family dysfunction or hard times. Any suggestions…..
For those who don’t know, Doki Doki Literature Club is a PC game that initially portrays itself as a lighthearted dating sim visual novel, but over time devolves into a metafictional, fourth wall breaking, psychological horror game in which the characters become aware that they are video game characters interacting with the player. It’s a pretty brilliant piece of media and I’d love to find a book that gives off similar vibes.
Some specific things I’m hoping to find:
- A story that seems innocent on the surface before devolving into horror/depravity.
- Fourth wall breaking/metafiction/non-traditional perspective.
- Characters that know they’re fictional.
- The reader becoming a character in the story.
I think this is a pretty big reach. I know that House of Leaves has some adjacent metafictional narrative style and it’s on my list, but I’d love to find something that really captures the feel of DDLC.
I’ve gone from being a die hard fantasy reader to..a non-fiction fanatic.
There’s something fascinating about spending a weekend or X amount of time with a book, and leaving with genuine knowledge or growth.
A few examples:
Under the Banner of Heaven, Can’t Hurt Me, Braiding Sweetgrass, Meditations, Man’s Search for Meaning, A Short History of Nearly Everything, The Rise of Rome.
I’m hoping a few of these suggestions may lead you to what I’m looking for, because I’m not really after a specific book, be it historical or self help, but more so just a book that has knowledge worth taking in.
I just finished Jon Krakauer’s “Into the Wild” (a couple of years ago I also read “Into Thin Air”) and now I have an itch to read more stories about expeditions or adventurers whose plans went awry.
The outcome doesn’t have to be horrible!! I guess I’m looking for more “human vs. nature” nonfiction stories where characters are humbled by their surroundings, or where the challenge proved to be significantly greater than originally thought. (Even better if they involve Arctic expeditions!!)
niche request, i know. i just need books about black characters that aren’t traumatic for once- as a queer black person, it’s so hard to find representation in books that aren’t straight up depressing. as important as those heavy books are, reading is an escape for me, and it’s difficult to digest those types of stories constantly.
however, i do enjoy darker themes/contemplative writing (a la sally rooney, otessa moshfegh, donna tartt, etc). when i asked for this type of recommendation at the bookstore, they directed me to queenie by candice carty -williams, and i hate it; it feels like reading a novel-length buzzfeed article. so, TLDR: a book with a poc main character that’s moody and raw/emotional, but not traumatic and super political.
thanks!
I’m noticing an inability in myself to look past mixed reviews to find something that’s truly unique and well crafted.
I’m looking for games that might not have wide appeal, but you’d be comfortable putting together an essay on why it is a brilliant game.
Games that are reasonably “not for everyone”.
I mean hell… if Hot Rod has a 39% on Rotten Tomatoes then maybe I shouldn’t be looking for popular consensus to determine what media I will enjoy.
not just an “adventurer”, but an actual knight, in service of a lord.
With actual knight armor, and helmets that cover the entire face. Bonus points if you can ride a horse and attack enemies at the same time.
I’ve played “knights of the nine” dlc from oblivion, so something like that.
not looking for multiplayer games or soulslike games.
I love pirates and have always wanted to sail, fix up or buy ships, hire a crew, rob, pillage, fight the Royal Navy, etc.
I know there’s AC Black Flag but futuristic parts of the AC story don’t interest me. I also know of Sea of Thieves but I don’t have any friends to play it with.
(I was looking forward to Skull & Bones but the more they reveal on that the more of a letdown it looks to be).
Best example I can think of right now could be something like Megaton Rainfall minus the threat of enemies actually standing a chance against you if that makes sense😅.
hello. I’m 22f. I finally graduated college and I’m looking to waste some time and money.
I use Mac for my job/personal life, but I understand it’s not great for gaming.
Here are some types of games I have previously liked:
-Professor Layton (nintindo DS) -animal crossing -life is strange -lego harry potter -nancy drew (as a kid) -sims 4
I’d like to play games like -Stray -Any kind of cyberpunk/apocolypse game -adventure games
I’m not interested in -War games/multiplayer games (COD etc) -anything that requires me to speak to a real person lol
I know of Xbox, PC, Playstation and the Nintendo Switch, but I’m very in the dark about the gaming world (obviously)
So let me know if you have game suggestions/console suggestions.
Edit: thank you everyone!! Sounds like Switch is probably my best bet for right now, and maybe expanding after that.
