I listen to a few true crime podcasts regularly, including Crime Junkie. Lately before each episode there’s been an ad for Ashley Flowers’ upcoming tour which she’ll be discussing a “wildly underreport case”. I appreciate that podcasts and true crime media bring attention to cases that may have gone forgotten; especially when they are released in a way that makes them widely accessible. With that said, using someone’s murder as content for a tour feels different. Unless I’m mistaken, I don’t think she’s planning on releasing the story in a wider format. I just can’t imagine being a victim’s loved one and finding out someone is touring the country, profiting off telling the story of their murder.
I’d like some podcast reccommendations and I am specifically interested in ones I may never have thought of listening too. So I’d like to hear people’s top 10 (or 5 if you can’t think of 10). It can be fiction, or non fiction any genre but please add a brief explanation, a sentence will do.
Mine are below, some I know to be very popular, others are a bit more niche. I look forward to hearing about everyone else’s.
Here is mine:
I always skip reruns. Luckily most podcasts mark them, but some (Radio lab) hide that deep in the description.
I pretty much always skip mailbag/voicemail/speaking with fans episodes. For the most part, random people are interesting, don’t care about the format
And now intend to skip live episodes, since I hate when the hosts really ham it up for the audience, especially if they do a lot of visual jokes
I’m interested in any podcasts that do deep dives on obscure and ancient religions like gnosticism, cathars etc. But not ones that are actively pushing one religion or political ideal (I listened to one podcast about gnostics earlier but it somehow quickly devolved into an anti abortion argument for some reason).
How important is it to you that a podcast you’re listening to have good sound quality?
I have my own sound quality related pet peeves, and I’m curious to know how much other people care. In some cases, I can excuse a noisy recording (for example) if the content is really interesting, but other times I just have to stop listening.
Hello podcast people, I’m searching for podcasts that discuss real life events in a comedic atmosphere - jokes, roasts and intelligent humor. So far what I found interesting are some Joe Rogan episodes, Dollop and Cumtown I would say.
Yeah so basically I’m 35 and honestly probably dealing with some loneliness. But also I’m thinking about how people who have been there my whole life won’t be there forever and I don’t like the feeling, but I think a book that could help me understand these things better.run towards the emotion might be helpful.
Thanks
Edit: I’m very grateful for all the responses. Thanks all. Seeing all of these responses helps me to realize this is a very common and human issue and that makes me feel a lot more connected to humanity and more “held”/secure in my predicament.
I drive a lot for work, and just getting into listening to books. At the end of the year when reviewing your “read” list, do you count these?
Can anyone suggest a great book to listen to? Not all narrators are equal!
Thanks!
Not a 4.5, not a 5, but a novel you truly believe is a 6⁄5! Your absolute favorite of favorites, the one novel you believe is actually perfect. The one novel you wish you could erase from your memory just to experience again for the first time Please feel free to gush as much as you can over your favorite read ever, no matter how well known, over-discussed or obscure.
Suggest me a book which is hard to read fast. Because it’s deep and not easy to understand. It’s not measly conversations and descriptions all the way but something that gets readers to think every now and then. Any suggestions of any genres appreciated.
(I will attach the list of Novel suggestions later)
Popular Suggestions: (Under work) Brothers Karmazova, Anna Karenina, Gravity’s rainbow, Name of the rose, Blood Meridian, Mrs Dollaway, The Waves, Finnegans wake, Ulysses, Moby dick, Magic mountain, Picture of Dorian gray, This is how you lose time war, Gentleman in Moscow, Three body Problem, The house of leaves, The silmarillion, East of Eden, Infinite jest. Annihilation, Lolita, Withering Heights, Overstory, Baroque Cycle, Hyperion, 100 Days of solitude, Dune, Count of Monte Cristo, All the light we cannot see
You’ve read many, but what is THE book that permanently changed your perspective and led to tangible changes in your life?
My friend is recovering from a major medical event and I’d like to send him a book, but we definitely don’t read the same stuff. What’s a good book for a lit expert and one that he’s not likely to have already?
Wow….thanks for all of the great suggestions! We don’t live in the same state and aren’t extremely close. Our kids are long time friends, so we stay in touch but I don’t know too much about him personally. I’ll go through these suggestions and find a couple of good ones to send. After hearing a bit more about his recovery, it seems like something light may be best. Thanks, Readers!
I love building stuff and then just watch how the game deals with it. Prime example of what I mean is Planet Zoo. Everything you build there is actually considered by the simulation - the guests will look at the animals from the places you build, the animals will interact with the environment and things you place etc.
It can be anything tho, building a zoo and watch people use it, building a race track and watch people race on it, whatever. My only wishes are that the graphics are decent and that the simulation behind it is not too shallow. It should also not be too micro-management heavy.
To use the first example that comes to mind, like the Resident Evil 2 remake. Whether you pick Leon or Claire, both are still important characters.
Or something like a game where you pick between a male and female option and the one you didn’t pick is your sibling. I feel like I should have an example of this, but I can’t think of one.
Ever played watch dogs? the first game had meh hacking but the gunplay made you feel like a hitman. I need something to scratch that itch. Something like Fear or max payne.
Preferebly modern guns but im cool with cowboy setting too.
EDIT: To clarify again, after some of the responses. I am after “Hopelessness, Dread, feeling of insignificance, being unable to affect the universe on a grand scale”. Things like “Universe will eventually end, and we cant stop it” or “ANything i do or will ever have done is, on cosmic scale, nothing”. I am NOT after “i read forbidden book and became mad” or “There are monsters hidden in the water that we cant see”.
To clarify, looking for games (though also movies/tv series) with stories that deal with cosmic insignificance of humanity, the sheer scale and inevitability of the universe. Note that i am NOT after “lovecraftian monsters and The Thing”. I am ok with them being present, but im mainly interested in the cosmic horror aspect.
Good examples of what im after:
Final Fantasy XIV - Endwalker
Outer Wilds
Soma
Death Stranding
The Secret World
Nier Automata (it hides it well, but at its core its a …
