New actions - Get Bluetooth Devices - Get Bluetooth Device - Authenticate (New) - In contrast to the old authenticate action, this one returns the result directly instead of copying it to the clipboard. - Get Device Motion Data (iOS-only) - Is Device Moving (iOS-only) - Is Call Active (iOS-only) - Get Compass Heading (iOS-only)
Some useful actions in recent releases

For example, make the iPhone 15 Pro action button perform a different function whether the device is locked or not.
- Get Modifier State (macOS):

The most useful new action is probably “Get Bluetooth Device”. With it, you can detect where you are based on what Bluetooth devices are close by. For example, …

I got tired of someone texting me and then deleting texts before i could read them. So i created an automation to log texts as they came in and before they get deleted, especially helpful when I’m not near my devices to try and see the text before it’s deleted.
Step 1. Create a note to act as your log and save it in whatever folder you want. If you rename it or move it later, you’ll have to fit the automation to look for the new note/location. I called it Test Message Log for the image above.
Step 2. Create an automation based on receiving a text from someone. Select the person (i used ‘Test’ in the image above) and any keywords you may want to use as filters. I left it blank so any message from them will be captured. Select ‘Run immediately’. Hit next.
Step 3. Select ‘New blank automation’.
Step 4. Search for and add the ‘Get text from input’ action. Select shortcut input as the variable.
Step 5. Search for and …
Currently trying to program more shortcuts into my shortcuts folder mapped to my action button. Anyone have any suggestions on any cool shortcuts I could map to it?
In the picture above I’ve got all the shortcuts I currently have
Toggle vibrate Turn my phone from 5G to LTE open the camera app Set my morning alarms And call my girlfriend
Sometimes, I need to hear what people say more clearly, so I want to increase the ambient sound. However, I don’t want to go through the hassle of going into the control center to adjust the settings. Instead, I’d like to create a Siri shortcut called “Super Listening” to quickly and easily toggle this feature on and off.
I’m looking for the best solution to auto-close after I exit the garage!
Time delay is unreliable as I might be slow to exit and trip the safety sensor, or it could be far too long and not close until I am in the road - much like what the HomeKit automation would do - being that I have to be SUPER far from my house to trigger close automatically.
What’s the best way to do this?
Note: I have motion sensors and cameras I can use outside as a trigger possibly though I haven’t found a way to do it yet. I also have Pushover and IFTTT if there’s any chance that can be of use here - I haven’t found a way yet to do it with my sensors but let me know if you have an idea.
Note - I use a meross garage door opener with dummy switches to avoid certifying open/close with HomeKit app. This is to replicate the process that a MyQ opener might be able to do with a Tesla, but instead do this with any vehicle - my Tesla or my wife’s Subaru, for example.
My podcast world has become so much better since I joined this community. Thanks for all the recs! So what’s the podcast you found here that you’re the most grateful for?
Mine is The Blindboy Podcast. I have never connected with a podcast so deeply. I’m learning a ton and it has heart, soul, and humor. I can’t believe I might have missed out on this podcast if it weren’t for some member of this community recommending it to someone.
Outlaw ocean was some of the best journalism I’ve ever listened too… is there anything out there that beats outlaw ocean?
As someone who has criticized the direction Radiolab has taken since Robert and Jad retired, it’s only fair to praise them when they do something good. The December 1 episode, “Boy Man”, about a boy with a condition that causes (very) early puberty, is fascinating.
If you are a fan of the classic Radiolab format and science-related story, this will please you.
I (29F) am looking for pods to binge during my travels for the holidays. I’m not very into fictional podcasts but am open to suggestions of anything you think I may enjoy.
Some of my recent listens have been -heavyweight -the daily -the kids of Rutherford county -search engine -you’re wrong about -scamanda -the retrievals -blind plea
I feel like it’s been a while since I’ve gotten a big dose of pure delight from a podcast. Reply all, early 99pi and some of the funnier moth stories have hit that gold standard for me. The mystery show also top tier but of course only a handful of episodes. Also some of the more lighthearted TAL (like the fiasco one). What are yours? I’m tagging this comedy but I’m not looking exclusively for comedy.
Its been a while now since Nate (and his model) left 538. Since then I have noticed a pretty big shift in the show.
I listen to a bunch of politics podcasts, and 538’s niche previously was that it was data driven. Mathematics was what drove the discussions. I really enjoyed looking at somthing as emotional and crazy as American politics through an empirical and almost cold lens. I was very calming to me, as well as interesting. It definitely had its own thing going on. I haven’t heard anything like it before or since.
I am very suprised then that the show has abandoned its data driven sensibilities. And in my opinion, hasn’t really replaced it with a unique point of view, at least not one I can decern. It doesn’t have the legal angle of a Rational Security, or the sausage-making angle of a Hacks on Tap or a Politics War Room (Carville not Bannon), or the naked aggression from whatever The Daily Beast is putting out there. It just feels like a generic politics …
Of all the books you’ve read in your life, what’s the one that you think everyone needs to read before they die? The one that is more important than all of the rest? Not necessarily the best or your most favorite, just the one you think is the most important.
Doesn’t have to be the best one you read, or your most favourite. Doesn’t even have to be good by all accounts. Maybe it took you by surprise, maybe you expected it. I just want to know one you had fun with this year!
My favorite so far this year was
Fiction:
Blake Crouch: Dark Matter
Non Fiction:
Evanna Lynch: The Opposite of Butterfly Hunting
I’m setting a goal of reading a classic a month in 2024. I already have 8 on my list but need 4 more. Here are some of my other thoughts. Which one is NOT worth my time?
Les Miserables.
1984.
Anna Karenina
Middlemarch.
Brideshead Revisited
Far from the Madding Crowd.
Around the World in 80 Days.
The Call of the Wild.
The Old Man and the Sea.
Great Expectations.
Please suggest me some books which had a huge impact on how you view life in general and you were never the same person you used to be after reading it.
Put me on to some crispy page turners plz
I am in my 30s and looking to chill and play games with good people. Unfortunately my only current experience is overwatch and league which is full of angry sweats. Any suggestions?
What I mean by this, is, what is a game that you will just open to kind of relax and move around in. I mean like gta and spiderman, where I’ll turn it on just to drive around or websling. Or sometimes I’ll play this game called exo one where I just glide around.
Basically, does anyone else have any other games like this?
Looking for games where exploration is rewarded with items/tools/weapons but there’s a high risk of losing progress or loot.
Games that fit:
Soulsborne games: getting the Red Tearstone Ring or the Zweihander in Dark Souls 1 is a perfect example of what I’m looking for
Minecraft/Minecraft-like games: Exploring caves looking for rare materials while basically everything can kill you also fits.
I’m looking for an (open world) game where you have a base that you can customise and store stuff, and than you leave the hideout to do the stuff in the open world and than periodically go back to the base to like store stuff, maybe plan stuff. Some games that come to mind are apocalypse games and survival games, but I was looking for something different like an action/adventure game or an RPG
\^\^ Title

EDIT: Wow yall blew up my wishlist! Tried to give my insight to each suggestions but I actually gtg. Rest assured all comments were/will be read and googled. TYSM!
Obviously exaggerating on the title, but I do love crazy convoluted stories in the genre of ‘then this happened BUT THEN ACTUALLY the thing was THE OTHER THING and your MOM is actually the HOUSE PLANT…’ alright you get the point.
I recently played 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim which I loved, inspiring this post. Other games I’ve played that could somewhat fit are Zero Escape (especially Virtues Last Reward) and Danganronpa. Maybe some ace Attorney chapters too.
Almost any genre, age or console is fine, I’m not picky! I just HATE when there’s a timer, so none of that please. Also no difficult ennemies or platforming parts that you have to restart many different times, especially if there’s backtracking involved.
