Version 2 demonstration with bold text and images
This is the first time I had the idea to make a text box with HTML (which I don’t know how to use), so this is what I made. The first time you run this shortcut, you will need to choose a photo to use as a wallpaper. I’d suggest cropping it to your screen size beforehand.
SURROUND TEXT WITH ASTERISKS TO MAKE IT *BOLD*
Note: I’ve found the simplest way to remove a note is to just make a new one with an opacity of 0%.
Enjoy :)
edit: I am on IOS 15b, so the Shortcut may not load for you. u/icecubed13 did leave their own version in the comments, which should work for IOS 14.
edit 2: I updated the link to version 2, which works on IOS 14. :)
I liked it for a while but just got tired of Joe interupting with the same boring stories. He has good guests but is not a good interviewer.
Not an entire series, a specific episode of a specific podcast that stuck with you. For me, it’s “The Cathedral” from Radio Lab.
Edit: “The Cathedral” was reported/written by the Reply All team & re-aired by Radio Lab.
I’ve been looking for new things to listen to and I usually look this exact question up on reddit but all the ones I find are from more than a year ago so I’m curious if anything really interesting has come out.
I just don’t like JRE or Joe Rogan as a person. Never really have. I won’t get into the why’s, but I just can’t stand listening to him longer than I have to.
But, I do like the idea of JRE and being able to have intimate conversations and interviews with either big name celebrities or just people famous in some aspect of some industry, from film-making, to science, to politics, to etc. I want a podcast where big name people are interviewed and talked to regularly.
The show used to be great, but nowadays it’s either old reruns, something really dreary, or something really frivolous. Has anyone else noticed this?
I listen to a lot of podcasts and have a bit of a weakness for investigative journalism and true crime, but have struggled in the years since Serial season one after every idiot with a microphone decided they should go out and try to solve a crime, particularly when you listen to them for twelve hours and they end the final episode with a big…
¯_(ツ)_/¯
Any recommendations for podcasts where they (with moral and investigative standards still intact) actually work out who did it?
I really enjoyed: To Live And Die in LA (Season One), Chameleon (Season One), Your Own Backyard, Small Town Dicks (All Seasons).
*Edit: Added grammar.
I grew in a traditionally masculine/patriarchal household where I was discouraged from traditionally feminine interests. I played sports, but was discouraged from things like theater. I never watched the Princess Bride because it had the word “princess” in it, I never watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer because the main character was a girl, etc, etc.
I’ve been reclaiming these things as an adult, and now I am a huge fan of both Buffy and The Princess Bride.
I’ve recently started reading feminine literature, and one of my friends recommended “Little Women”. I absolutely fell in love with the book. The characters, the setting, the prose, the drama, everything was amazing. So now I need more book recommendations. I’ve been looking at “Pride & Prejudice” and “Interview With a Vampire”, but I’m not sure about starting them yet.
I feel like every book I read is about the great adventures of one’s youth, or someone growing up, and every book I have heard of involving an older person is about them coming to terms with their death or has darker themes. r/suggestmeabook, do you have any recommendations that break this mold?
I was called this all the time in my younger years, all the way up to high school. Just because of the way I talked, what my interests were etc. It wasn’t until recently talking to a therapist this summer that I realized that this probably played a role in my own insecurities and feelings of being an outsider.
I had a revelation of sorts this summer. I love reading books by and about musicians, and it wasn’t until I read Slash’s memoir where he talked about being biracial where I finally felt seen: a black guy really into rock and guitar music who didn’t fit into one box. I totally connected with that.
Are there any similar books where black people wrestle with their identity and “blackness”? Or even if that’s mot necessarily the main subject, but an element that’s there for the character.
Though I mentioned Slash’s book, I’m not really looking for any other memoirs.
Edit: YA isn’t really my bag either. Not that I’m a snob! Just not really my thing.
Also just want to say, I …
I recently played the game Layers of Fear and love the idea of a first-person story where you witness the narrator descend into madness. Does anyone have any suggestions for a similar horror story where the narrator starts off (relatively) normal but becomes more of an unreliable narrator as time goes on? The closer to Layers of Fear the better!
I’ve looked at other posts looking for similar concepts (narrator descending into madness) and would like to say I read The Bell Jar in junior year of high school already!
EDIT: For anyone who’s interested in the answers but doesn’t want to go through the whole comment section, the most often recurring answers were these:
The Haunting of Hill House
House of Leaves
The Shining
Most works by H.P. Lovecraft (At The Mountains of Madness seems to be a popular pick)
Yellow Wallpaper
Heart of Darkness
Hi! I love fantasy worlds, be they high fantasy, alternate reality, whatever. I prefer for my own reasons female authors though, and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions of books or authors.
I love Diana Wynne Jones- I recently read Howl’s Moving Castle which has become a favorite. I am currently enjoying A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness, though some of the twilightesque romance is a little sappy for my taste.
Looking forward to recs!
Or even like a TV show or a film with a similar style or plot
Examples of prompts I found interesting:
YOU LIVE IN A WORLD WHERE YOUR SOULMATE IS UNABLE TO HURT YOU, INTENTIONALLY OR OTHERWISE. YOU ARE FIGHTING IN A WAR, WHEN ONE OF THE ENEMY’S KNIVES HARMLESSLY GLANCES OFF YOU.
YOU’VE BEEN SENT INTO AN ALTERNATE DIMENSION WHERE MUSIC IS MAGIC: CHOIRS CAN CHANGE THE WEATHER AND ORCHESTRAS CAN TOPPLE CASTLE WALLS. WITH YOUR DIGITAL MUSIC DEVICE (PHONE, MP3 PLAYER, WHICHEVER), YOUVE JUST BECOME THE MOST POWERFUL WIZARD IN THE WORLD.
EVERY BABY IS TAKEN AWAY BY THE GOVERNMENT AND RETURNED WHENTHEY ARE TEN YEARS OLD. THEY NEVER REMEMBER WHAT HAPPENED IN THOSE YEARS, BUT THEY ALWAYS RECOGNIZE THEIR PARENTS. YOU, HOWEVER, REMEMBER EVERYTHING. AND THOSE ARENT YOUR PARENTS.
YOU FINALLY BUILD ENOUGH COURAGE TO TALK TO THAT CUTE SOMEONE YOU SEE EVERYDAY ON THE BUS. THEIR FACE TURNS DARK AS THEY RESPOND “YOU SHOULDNT BE ABLE TO SEE ME.”
SIX PEOPLE WERE CHOSEN TO GO …
What I mean is games like RDR2 and Uncharted 4 where it actually feels like your character has weight. Not just a feather of a character.
is there such a game where there is a giant contrast between endings?
Examples:
Oxenfree: small island with several locations.
NITW: small town with a few main locations that are revisited daily and changes a bit as the story progresses.
Stardew Valley: Small town with several maps and people, and as you progress through the game, you unlock more dialogue, interactions, and locations, and learn more about the people. There are also many similar games that have this SDV + Animal Crossing-type feel, like Cozy Grove. I’m not looking for a game too similar to this in gameplay, but this is just an example of the sort of vibe I like.
A Short Hike: A small island (with tiny nearby islands) that has as a wealth of exploration as well as a central “plot” which is really just a goal to reach.
Lakeview Cabin: Even though it’s a horror/strategy game, I still like the feel of it.
Heavy Rain: Even though there isn’t a sense of “revisiting” areas, you revisit different people as they individually progress, and …
To explain: I’m looking for a difficult game, but where I can (or have to) do a lot of little things before I’m strong enough to face what lies ahead. I realise this may sound bizarre, so here’s a few examples:
In Skyrim, I could start on legendary difficulty and improve my level and equip just by robbing towns, while avoiding enemies completely.
In Outward, I could collect ingredients or kill a wolf, return to town, sell it’s furs and meat and the ingredients, rest at home, repeat
In Dark Souls, I can keep beating low level enemies that don’t pose a challenge at all.

I’d prefer if it wasn’t just killing low level enemies, but that’s okay too. Thank you in advance!
Please NO MMOs and no games from before 2010. I don’t mind the graphics or clunkiness, I just don’t want to spend a lot of time on getting it to run on a modern system.
This one is a bit of a weird request.

I’m looking for a game that is engaging to play that I can listen to podcasts or music in the background to. Recently it’s been the Binding of Isaac but I’ve found that I get distracted by the music or podcast and end up making mistakes I otherwise wouldn’t. I’ve also tried this in low-pressure strategy games, like Rimworld, Planet Coaster and Cities: Skylines but I have the opposite problem where I get too focused on the game and don’t pick up on any of the podcast. Maybe it’s just me and I can’t focus on more than one thing at a time, but if anyone has a game that is engaging to play while not really needing my full attention I would appreciate any suggestions! Thanks.
