At least on work days haha.
These aren’t what you’d call hidden gems or anything, if you’re into podcasts enough to be on this subreddit you probably know about these but I just thought I’d do a quick recommendations post to share some of my all-time favourites.
Sorry about my botched formatting.
Dead Eyes
One man’s journey to find out whether Tom Hanks really said he had “Dead Eyes” when watching his audition tape for HBO’s Band of Brothers. There are so many great conversations in this show about Hollywood, acting, and especially success and failure and how rejection in professional settings can really mess you up, and how to deal with. Love it love it love it. A lot of great interview guests as well.

Listen chronologically, but if you’re not sure it’s jiving jump ahead to “Let the Mystery Be” and then go back to the start again if you’re into it.
You’re Wrong About …
I’ve given many a try. The ones that drive me nuts are those that are narrated in a monotone style, with the host sounding like he or she is reading from a script or a magazine article. Some don’t even have any actual investigation at all. No interviews, no nothing.
I am a fan of anything Payne Lindsay has done, The Village by Justin Ling(CBC), Bear Brook and The Doodler by SF Chronicle.
Let me start off with one of the most eye roll ways of starting a thread like this which is…I’ve been listening to podcasts for over a decade. When I started there wasn’t ads, nothing was exclusive, and most people used iTunes.
Podcasts got me through all my long commutes in college. I was listening to easily 20+ hours a week, now it’s closer to 3. The big reason is that I just don’t commute anymore. I graduated and now work from home. And while I do put one on while I’m cleaning or running errands, it’s rare.
Slowly a lot of the podcasts I’ve listened to have ended (ex. UBK Happy Funtime Hour, Harmontown), dropped in quality (ex. Reply All), or gone exclusive (ex. Heavyweight). And honestly nothing new has really interested me to replace them despite trying quite a few.
Here’s a few things that I hate about modern podcasts besides all the app exclusivity stuff:
Too many ads. I know they have to pay the bills, but honestly the …

Haven’t seen much on Reddit at all about it. Couple episodes out so far focused on Amazons treatment of their workforce. Curious what people think so far. Imo the subject matter is pretty interesting so far, the host is a bit colloquial for my tastes, the ads are just brutal. Way too many for the length of the episode and there was one for a mobile game where the same ad played 4 times in a single episode. Will keep listening but hoping he smoothes out the rough edges a bit.
A podcast about podcasts.
Reviews, recommendations, interviews and discussion…about podcasts. Amirite?
I thought it was one of my better ideas.
The only NPR podcast I listen to is Hidden Brain. I’ve been listening for a few years and I love it.
Are there any others that you like? Give me the good and the bad.
I need to cry. Any genre. Help a girl out.
Everything from the books themselves, to how old or where we were in life when we discovered her writing? How her writing affected us.
Her incredible career that ranged from the most romantic of Vampires, mesmerizing Witches, obsessed Spirits, turning a famous fairy tale into a BDSM centered erotic trilogy; to her effect on the city of New Orleans as the “Vampire Capital” of the world, her rise as an honorary monarch of the Gothic subculture. To her conversion and immersion into Catholicism, and her later books that were inspired by her Faith.
She was a remarkable artist, and definitively one of the most influential authors on Gen X.
Please share your recommendations, and your thoughts/feelings on your favorite Anne Rice books or series, as an honor to the legend herself, whom sadly departed this mortal coil just last night, may she Rest In Peace.
Edit: It’s Anne* Rice not Ann*. My apologies, one of my BFF’s is an Ann, so autocorrect automatically changed the name — as my Ann is …
I am just looking for some lighthearted fun reading to give me something to do besides stare at Reddit and get depressed. I don’t need characters to grow, or learn some kind of lesson. Just a few jokes, maybe some action/sexiness, maybe travel or sports related. Very open to suggestions
Edit: wow thank you guys for all the suggestions. Now I don’t know where to start…
I’m pretty fond of the idea of skill trees. However, they usually don’t give you enough points to get every skill, forcing you to specialize into certain branches. In theory, this means you can experiment with things, but there is typically a standard “best” combination of skills depending on the situation. That’s another thing I don’t like - situational power. I want something without pros and cons - only pros. A game where you gradually get more powerful - there can be a limit, but I don’t want to put all my eggs into one or two baskets. Bonus points if there’s steam achievements.
Whether it achieved it or not, what’s the most ambitious game you’ve ever played? A game that tried to, or did, achieve something no game before it had. Also are there any insanely ambitious games in development currently?
I read Novels often so reading is not an issue, but i want to experience something that makes the best use of the ‘Visual’ aspect as well.
I don’t find many games engaging any more, any suggestions for games (old or new) that may peak my interest?
Hi all,
I was inspired by another post I saw of a person who got their mother into Stardew Valley. Was thinking of gifting my mom something this holiday season to act as a new hobby for her outside of browsing Facebook and watching TV. She is in her late 50s, likes music and art. She doesn’t like violence/action. No gaming experience (yet, hopefully). She is not a native English speaker, so something not super dialogue- or text-heavy would be ideal.
Lately she has been enjoying learning languages on Duolingo, so I think something with a similar user-friendly interface would be good.
Mostly I’m looking for something she could use to relax and help with stress.
Thanks a lot!
Edit: Wow thank you everyone for your suggestions! I’m still looking through everything but I really appreciate it.
