Hello all, I’ve listened to podcasts for around 7 years now. I’ve been keeping a long list in excel of ones I’ve listened to so there’s over 200+ here. To preface I only really listen to long form investigation and documentary and occasional series. I don’t like sensationalised gore or violence, or missing persons or just general murder ones for murders sake and I’m also British so I have no interest in US centric/politics stuff. So this is a mix of different stuff that isn’t the above. I am an avid podcast listener and over the years have listened to a lot of true crime podcasts. I have always had mixed feelings about the genre, particularly from creators without any expertise in the field.

Lately I have found them too disturbing. I tried thinking about what engages me with them and I think it is the mystery and storytelling. I have always felt more intrigued by the murderless stories about white collar crimes, scammers, deception etc and this type of true crime I can still stomach.

My 9 year old has just recently started willingly reading at night on his own. He picks up a graphic novel every night and reads it for an hour. His teacher will not allow them to read graphic novels in class due to the fact they lack literally sentence structures. He is dyslexic and has adhd so this has been a huge hurdle and I now feel like he feels shame for liking these books. can you help me find a good transition for him? He enjoys creepy stuff, history, Greek mythology (Percy Jackson is too hard for him), fun facts, outdoors, legos, art. I don’t know where to start. It seems like everything jumps from graphic novel to chapter books and I need a middle ground as a stepping stone that can hold his interest.

Hi all,

Last weekend my family and I suffered a devastating house fire. We humans all barely made it out, but we lost all our possessions and also our precious three kitties passed away due to smoke inhalation.

I’m suffering major trauma and anxiety especially at night, and I need a comforting book that will help me heal and relax me at night. I don’t like high fantasy or anything that will be too cerebral.

I think it would be comforting to read books with kitties in them too, so that’s not a dealbreaker.

I like slice of life, cozy fiction… I want to escape to a heartwarming, lovely place where nothing bad happens.

Just please nothing involving trauma, death, fires, etc.

I want a book which accurately depicts someone being driven to insanity. I’m aware that many such stories books have been written like this (the first that comes to mind is The Yellow Wallpaper, which I plan on reading soon) but I want to ask for any lesser known or exceptionally well written books which depict a character’s distraught mental state.

Also, if there are non fiction or real life examples of things written by people who are ‘going insane’, I’d be interested to know about them.

This is mostly because I want to try and write in a style similar to this without coming off as completely insensitive.

Okay, don’t call me homophobic for this, but I want some books with gay subtext rather than explicit gayness. I’m a gay teenager, and live with my parents in the DEEP south of Louisiana. They can not find out or I deadass know they will disown me, and I’m a broke bit so I can’t really do that rn 😭 hg moved away and she was my supplier of books like that. Obviously if I could I would read LGBTQ books, but my parents are very involved in my life and it’s hard to hide things from them. As long as it doesn’t say anything about gayness on the back or if you look it up it’s good with me! I like coming of age books a lot, any recs will be great though ❤️❤️❤️ and any advice on how to hide gay books from my parents accepted too

The story of Robert Mose is one of the most popular history books of the 20th century. In part, this is because the skill of the author and the delicacy which they handle your attention. I’m in the mood for a shooter of some sort, but want one where the bullets hit the enemies hard. What I mean by that is that I’m not shooting to plink down an HP bar, but 2, 3, or 4 shots pretty much stops an enemy. Not necessarily looking for a MilSim, even though Ready or Not is a good example of this.

Games like RDR2 also fit this mold, since few enemies can take more than a few chest shots, and each hit you land really feels heavy, disrupting the target for a moment.

Hard Limit - a better way to stop doomscrolling at home

iOS already has screen time activity limits, but it is WAY too easy to just ignore it for another 15 minutes repeatedly or the ENTIRE DAY. So I created an automation that closes the app if you try to open it when you’ve been on that app too long.

It works well with iOS native app activity limits by giving you some leeway. Let’s say that you’re scrolling reddit watching a video and the activity limit kicks in before you can finish the video. You can ignore the activity limit once to finish your meme and once the shortcut limit is exceeded, the next time you open the app you’re sent to the homepage. For example, if your app limit is set to 30 minutes, you can set the shortcut limit to 35, to give you just that little bit of leeway.

The neat part is that it works when you’re home BUT if you wanna kill time when you’re NOT home or traveling, you can …

Trying to use Proton Mail contacts in place of Apple’s contacts app

Hi, I’m pretty new to using shortcuts and have only done pretty basic things so far, such as creating shortcuts to open an app, so I can use custom icons.

I have been transferring a lot of stuff from Apple to Proton, including my contacts, and as of right now, Proton does not have a separate contacts app, nor can it be set as default contacts app. (Attached screenshot from Proton’s website.)

So, until that changes, I was wondering if it would be possible to create a shortcut that opens Proton Mail and automatically brings up the contacts, rather than inbox, and if so, how to set it up.

How can I create a shortcut that turns on my multiple daily alarms for the morning? I have multiple alarms set in case I sleep through and I turn them off once I wake up. I then have to turn them all back on manually, just looking to see if there’s a shortcut I could create that turns them all on at midnight for example, I wake up the next day turn them off and they’ll just turn themselves back on?

Mornin’ Throwers! I just wanted to express some appreciation for the sub and all the joy it’s brought me these last several months. Heck I even made this new account specifically for throwing shenanigans 🤣 Chatting with you all about tricks and throws and life and everything in between has been so fun.

In the early months of my returned obsession I’ve amassed several throws that just don’t get used enough and I thought it’d be fun to give one away 😁

Radio Lab is one of the all-time great podcasts in my opinion. Really engaging, well-researched and produced. The classic duo of Jad and Robert as hosts was ao great with their chemistry, their presentation of the topics and interviews that it hardly ever missed the mark. I realize nothing can laat forever and they needed to move on. The new team for the last few years has been doing a good job keeping it going, but the tone of the show has become really grating on my nerves with the new hosts. Their overly-chipper, cutesy presentation of almost every subject dosed with infantalizing banter really turns me off at times. Like the show is just more and more made for kids. And it’s always been a staple of the show to anthropomorphize cells, animals, bacteria, etc to try and help explain heady, complicated scientific content, but I feel the new hosts use this approach so much as to make it annoying. I will continue to listen, but just wish I didn’t have the feeling I was always …
Betrayal S5 Is Why I’m struggling with the Clancy murder trial.

I’ll probably get eviscerated for this, but if I hadn’t listened to Season 5 of Betrayal — Saskia’s story — I don’t think I’d ever doubt this murder case. Listening to Saskia’s story of not just being betrayed by someone she deeply trusted, but severely taken advantage of while her mental and physical health were deteriorating, has left a permanent level of doubt in me when it comes to male romantic partners reporting crimes committed against them by their partners.

Lindsay Clancy’s admission of guilt was reported by her husband, after she’d just suffered extreme injuries, following her months-long battle with PPD. It’s clear the father, Patrick Clancy, was checked out of the marriage and was never fully investigated, because the case seemed open and shut. Every time people argue about how stupid others are for doubting Lindsay’s guilt, Saskia comes to mind as a reminder.

Need a book for a preschool boy about why girls are just as cool as him

So I got sent here from the /Parenting group - my 5yo son has started talking about “girls” not being as strong/fun/cool as boys are, and I’m a little worried it has come through from some of the books we’re reading him (he has recently discovered Roald Dahl, which we are selectively reading to him (BFG, George’s Marvellous Medicine, The Twits) - he loves the stories, it really fires up his imagination but also has quite OTT and inflammatory language)

Can you recommend me a book/series of books suitable for age 5-6 that have strong/brave/interesting girl characters with exciting main character roles, ideally with a fantasy or adventure element? My husband (37) used to be a huge reader but burned out a few years back, said he’d read so much that nothing felt unique anymore. He’s recently mentioned wanting to get back into it though, specifically sci-fi and I want to surprise him with a new book or series to get into.

A few things that might help. I know that loves Dune and Pillars of the Earth, so big sweeping stories with a lot going on are his thing. He’s also into physics and space stuff as a hobby, so he notices when the science in a book is just made up or there for vibes, and it takes him out of the story. He read The Martian and Project Hail Mary already and liked both, but said the writing itself didn’t really stick with him. He’s also into D&D and warhammer if that helps paint the picture. I thought about suggesting Red Rising but I have a feeling the science in it would bug him more than anything else.

Mostly, I just want something where the science doesn’t pull him out of the story but the writing has some …

I feel like I see so many books where the premise is “so there’s this magical university where all the interesting people go, I went there and studied readings of the soul and learnt forbidden arts and it changed my life- anyways this is all about my life three years after I graduated. 😁😁😁”

I want to read about their time at the college or university or whathaveyou. It doesn’t necessarily need magic involved, but I would like an academia/dark academia/fantasy ect ect that actually has plenty of the study and the life of the characters learning there. Little bit of context… I’ve (45F) never played video games but I have spent time watching my husband and kids play over the years. Stuff like fortnight and call of duty.

Well kids are now off to college, and husband travels for work a lot still. So now there’s all this gaming equipment and it’s mom’s turn lol.

But I need some recommendations. I can’t do the shooting games very well. I’m looking for something that’s maybe got a social aspect to it? I think it’s pretty cool you can interact with real people from around the world in some games.

I also don’t mind challenging myself too. Like using a mouse and a keyboard at the same time. But maybe a game that’s not all about violence would be preferable.

An open-world realistic military shooter game where you start with minimal forces and equipment, and have to gradually take control of a large region while researching/capturing better equipment and vehicles, like the Antistasi or Liberation mods for ARMA 3. ARMA is very janky and hard to get into. I’m currently trying to start a solo playthrough of the Liberation mod and it’s a lot to figure out to get it working properly. I’d love a modern game purely dedicated to this kind of mode.

I’m trying to make the best anti theft and I need some help.

I analysed almost all the posts on anti-theft shortcuts, and this is the best system I came up with. But I have a few questions.
1. I set location to ‘best’ instead of ‘10 meters’, and that’s a good idea, right?
2. I can’t find a way to turn off auto brightness.
3. I can’t find a way to make my phone take the pictures quietly. Plus, when the pictures are sent, they make sounds. All of which are probably bad because that will alert the thief, right? Can I turn them off without affecting ringer volume, perhaps?
4. Is there anything else I should add to improve this?
5. Do I have to use Messages to send the pictures and location? Is there no way I can use WhatsApp? Cause my partner has an Android phone.

Last time I demoed QM was back in v2.7.0, when it still had all of those serif italic fonts and a couple of other things you guys simply weren’t a fan of.

I decided to make some changes, including switching the fonts to a more standard sans Unicode style, as you can see in the screenshots.

Apart from that, QM has had quite a few major changes since then, including the addition of Configs, which lets you customise your experience as much as you please and make QM your own.

What Changed

The old portrait-style QM also didn’t work particularly well in landscape. For example, when you want to play some games, you ended up having to scroll through the menu — and nobody wants to do that! Because of that, I made a dedicated Landscape mode, with only the essentials you may need while playing your favourite game.

I wanted a Shortcut way to clean up my Photos library (maybe neatly transfer my photos for offline backup) and organize every photo chronologically into dedicated monthly albums.

I put together an AppleScript inside the Shortcuts on Mac.

What it does:
- Fully Dynamic: Automatically starts from the earliest photo in your library and works up to your newest photos (no hardcoded years).
- No Duplicate Albums: Checks if an album already exists before creating a new one.
- No Empty Albums: Skips creating albums for months where no photos were taken.
- Handles Large Libraries: Uses a timeout block so macOS won’t abort halfway through large photo collections.

I just finished Love Trapped and am looking for something new to start. It doesn’t have to be a similar topic, just has to be a serialized story where I’m so excited to know what happens next that I’ll go to the gym just to listen to it. I drive a lot for work and I enjoy listening to deep dive type podcast. Over the past few months I’ve seem to run out of podcasts to listen to and every time I get on here to look I see the same ones being suggested. I’ll put a list of shows I’ve listened to and if you have a recommendation please comment. Seems like there are no more good podcast out there. I don’t really enjoy many BBC podcast just find them very dull and kind of boring. (Just my opinion), but if you have one that you think I may like then I’ll give it a shot. This is a slightly strange request, but I’m trying to figure out why I have such a hard time connecting with female protagonists in prose fiction even though I’m a woman and I love plenty of female characters in manga, webtoons and light novels.
I don’t think my problem is female protagonists themselves. I think I’m tired of stories where being a woman becomes the organizing principle of the character’s entire existence.
Even in bizarre/speculative/literary fiction, I keep running into stories where the surrealism eventually becomes a metaphor for patriarchy, female bodily autonomy, the male gaze, domestic oppression, etc. Or the heroine’s arc revolves around proving herself against men, escaping men, being underestimated by men, defeating men, showing that women can do X too.

It’s a trope across all storytelling media that I actually don’t hate at all when done well (Last of Us and Dungeon Crawler Carl for example!) but I feel like it’s everywhere. So I’m mostly curious, are there any books that flip the trope on its head?

Whatever your interpretation of “opposite” might be. Could be a simple gender swap, or maybe a young person guiding an older person, or the old guy is the quippy funny one and the little girl is the one who’s seen too much shit and has their walls up. The big dangerous journey and one character healing emotionally/spiritually one way or another seem like an essential part of the trope, sometimes with a smack of “chosen one” in there. Editing to add: please don’t take “opposite” too literally, it was just the simplest word I could fit in the post title to get to the point. I mostly want to see some more unique interpretations of the trope.

Open to any genre but I gravitate toward sci-fi/fantasy and apocalyptic stories.

I’ve been getting into Helldivers 2 recently, gathered about 65 hours in it over the span of about less than 20 days (holy chud I know) and I love how the game lets you know that you’re just another soldier, and that the Helldivers are “expendable” to super earth.

Another game that I feel captures this quite a bit is Battlefield 1 (also I think I should mention, I heavily prefer war games centred around the World Wars, or have WW-esque themes)

Hi all love the idea, dungeon diving, getting better gear and upgrading, upgrading your place or restoring town, I find sandbox progression loops to be addicting but I find farming and cleaning very boring. I tried fields of mistria which I liked more but just do not really click with farming. I honestly love being able to upgrade my base/ town/ gear as well. iOS 27 Beta finally lets my expense tracker run automatically from notifications

A little while ago I shared a Shortcut that automatically logged my expenses from bank text messages.

A lot of the comments were basically saying the same thing:

Looks like that wait is finally over.

In the latest iOS 27 developer beta5, Shortcuts can now run when a notification arrives.

That means if your banking app sends a notification after you pay with your card, you can use that notification to log the expense automatically.

No more relying on SMS.

I updated my shortcut to use the new trigger, and it’s been working really well so far.

Setup (iOS 27 Beta)
1. Add the shortcut below.
2. In the Shortcuts app, press and hold the shortcut and tap Edit.
3. Tap Automation at the top.
4. Choose Notification.
5. Select your banking app.
6. Turn on Run Immediately.

For iMessage, I currently use two Keyflow toolbars: one for shortcuts and another for frequently used emojis.

My first toolbar includes an OpenAI shortcut that takes the text I have typed and cleans up the spelling, grammar, and punctuation before I send it.

I also have an Evernote action. For example, someone might text me something I want to remember later, or send me an idea that I need to process when I have more time. I can quickly save that information to a specific Evernote folder without leaving the conversation.

Another button lets me create a reminder directly in the Reminders app.

Inside Reminders, I use two additional toolbars. The first includes actions for inserting formatted text, saving information to Evernote, creating different types of reminders, and accessing other useful options.

Every iPhone user has done this. You copy an address someone sent you. On the way to the maps app a friend sends a joke, you copy that to forward it, and the address is just… gone.

Back to scrolling up through the thread to find it again.

Or the worse one: you’re pulling five things out of a doc (a name, a code, an email, a link, a number) and you have to go back and forth five separate times, because iOS only ever remembers the last thing you copied.

That ”only the last one” thing drove me nuts, so I spent way too long in Shortcuts building a fix. 😅

I’ve always loved yoyos and I have been watching and reading about yoyos for the last few months. I know the speedaholic and shooting star are similar. But I couldn’t resist as I love collecting things and bought my self some yoyos for my birthday. You guys really make things look so easy, I can barely do a simple bind. I tried a breakaway into a trapeze yesterday and the string got caught in the k2 and cut my mouth open from the inside LOL.

I’m not sure if “documentary-style” is the correct way to describe what I’m looking for where it’s almost like your watching a documentary but just listening, but basically I’m looking for:

- Non-Fiction
- Scripted (at least the majority of it), more highly produced, can have multiple types of elements though like clips from interviews/clips from other media/etc.
- NOT true crime. Or I guess I mean not like typical true crime, nothing to do with extreme violence. Not looking for a solving an open mystery type thing.

I want a long series that can keep me for a long time, and that would also make me want to keep reading instead of going to sleep.

I already finished pretty much all of Discworld, a song of ice and fire, hyperion, hitchhikers guide to the galaxy, Robin Hobb’s stuff. For some reason I never managed to get into Malazan, even after reading the first book twice.

Would love some suggestions, the genre doesn’t really matter although I do obviously have a tendency to go for fantasy/scifi when it comes to long series.

So, I just finished reading a translation of Les Liaisons dangereuses, the 1782 French novel which is the basis of the movie 1988 Dangerous Liaisons.

The book is told entirely through letters between a social circle of French aristocrats and their interconnected affairs and betrayals. It was a fantastic read and I absolutely couldn’t put it down because at the end of the day I am a shameless chismosa.

Any genre, any time period, but it has to either be in English or have an English translation.

I kind of did this question a year ago and received A BUTT-LOAD of great recommendations (thank you guys. Seriously . I‘ve got a TBR list for LIFE ) I wanted to ask again because although the last post went great, I did end up getting a lot more books on US history than I had hoped, rather than books on other countries and their history, customs and stories in general. I did say in that one that I wasn’t well-versed in U.S. history and politics as well, so I was ok with that. It lead to some enjoyable and very eye-opening reads. But this time, hopefully I can get more recs for books from other countries to broaden my knowledge of the world (and hopefully yours too if you‘re looking for the same thing). I used to love reading YA (Maximum Ride, Divergent, Hunger Games, Uglies). Start the book for the plot, stay for the character development and a chaste flirty love story. Themes that make you really think about the world afterwards but prose that’s propulsive and fun and funny.

As an adult, I feel like to find this I either have to keep reading books about teenagers which makes me feel a little slimy, or settle for either of the two poles - romance for romance, thriller for plot.

I want all of it, together, in a book with characters legally old enough to rent a car.

Edit: As a point of reference, the closest I‘ve found was The Traveler by John Twelve Hawks. Also, I don’t like fantasy (magic, dragons, supernatural, “ancient”). Thanks everyone for your help!

What drew me to all of these books is the way they explore what it means to play the hand you’re dealt. I’m fascinated by stories of people who endure incredibly difficult circumstances, and I always come away with a deeper understanding of resilience, a bigger sense of compassion, and awe at the many ways people survive and grow through hardship.

What period? Any! I don’t really care. Just anything before the 1940s. Middle grade and up.

Most period piece or old novels star the rich or decently well-off. Even the March family in “Little Women” is poor, but they still have enough money to pay for a servant. Escapism is the reason, I know.

I don’t want cutesy rich people escapism. I don’t want rags to riches. I want to read a novel about someone who I would probably be in the past: bottom of the totem pole working class.

I’ve already read “A Tree Grows In Brooklyn” and a few of the Little House on the Prarie.

Star Citizen? Development limbo forever. Big graphics, 1990s complexity, 500 thrusters on your ship go brrrr “simulation”, zero point.

No Man’s Sky? Fun progression, 1000 proofs of concepts and tutorials disguised as plot continuity. Human pattern recognition still beats procedural generation. Player gains rep, but zero impact on the galaxy.

Elite Dangerous? The economy is an illusion, powerplay mechanics give you the same feeling of actual influence as casting a vote in a presidential election. Your insignificance in that galaxy is never understated, least gratifying grind in gaming.

EVE Online? Toxic shithole, dead chats, a simulation of real world class disparity that no one in their right mind should pay $19/mo to be part of.

My wife and I had an incredible time recently playing Blue Prince, up until we reached a point where things just got so deep and abstract that we had to pull the ripcord. Unfortunately, we didn’t really get a sense of closure from Blue Prince, and now we’re craving something that scratches the same (and very specific) itch. I’m actually starting to worry that it’s such a specific itch that it might not be able to be scratched by any game other than Blue Prince, which is what brings me here.

We want to be dropped into a mystery where our own investigative abilities are the primary method of advancing the game. When we played Blue Prince, we had a whole notebook of notes we took, with no real idea if they were important or not at the time. Looking for a game where you explore, fight, or loot with a vehicle you can also live / work / sleep in. Can be in space, land, sea, whatever!

Essentially Pacific Drive if you never returned to the garage, or Subnautica after you get the Cyclops.

The ships in starfield somewhat scratch this itch… but that game has other problems. Maybe I should try it again.

I am new to the Apple ecosystem and just came across shortcuts yesterday. After about 45 minutes of tinkering with Gemini, I got it to work, and I was so impressed! I’ve been doing this manually with Gemini “gems” by copy pasting for so long! Having it automated is so much fun.

I had a fun, extremely nerdy idea today and decided to build a shortcut for it. According to Einstein’s Special Relativity, when you move, time passes slightly slower for you compared to someone standing still (Time Dilation).

I wanted to know exactly how much younger I am than my couch every day, just by walking.
The Physics & The Math
Since human walking speed is tiny compared to the speed of light, the time dilation formula simplifies nicely. If we know the daily distance (d) and average speed (v), the time “saved” is:
⁠Time = (d × v) / 2c²⁠

How the Shortcut Works
The shortcut pulls two daily metrics from Apple Health:
1. Walking/Running Distance (Sum in meters)
2. Walking Speed (Average in m/s)
Then, it runs a Calculate Expression action. To get the output directly in nanoseconds (so it’s actually readable and not just a bunch of zeros), I converted the 2c\^2 constant to match the scale. The formula in the shortcut looks exactly like this:

Hello!

I was looking for a shortcut that, at the beginning of each month, goes and grabs all the photos (and videos) from the previous month and puts them in an album.

I know you can see the date when you scroll past them, but I’m trying to minimize my endless scrolling in Photos, plus I wanted a nice overview of the previous month. I’ll admit I was looking while sleep-deprived and couldn’t find one here, so I thought I’d share mine. This is the first one I’ve made, so feel free to tweak it/give feedback so I can improve it!

I had a yo- yo as a kid for a brief time and loved it (even though I wasn’t very good at all and just played for fun) and decided to go back to it as an adult and the yo-yo I ordered and some other fun toys similar to it arrived today and I was soo exited to be able to try it out for the first time since I was a kid and as soon as I opened the box and my mom saw what was in it and just kept asking if these are for my kid nieces and nephews and I kept repeatedly having to tell her no they are for me as I used to have one as a kid and loved it and just wanted to get back into it and she just kept not taking it seriously and just spent the whole time just straight up laughing out loud at me for being into toys as a grown ass adult in my 20s.

Even after I had opened my yo-yo and was just sitting and playing with it I could hear her snickering to herself so I just told her that it was really not funny but she said I’m just laughing at someone who is in their 20s wanting to buy and play …

- True story (I don’t like fictional pods)
- A fact is crazier then fiction type story
- open to a pod where each episode is a different story.
- My preference is scam/non-violent true crime, or at least if there is violence, it’s not the full focus of the story (ie I enjoy hearing about cults, so the build up to maybe a particular event like Jones town, where it’s an exploration of how/why this escalated and not just about the terrible event)

Hi. I love history. I love little known history. My all time favs are Futility Closet and The Constant. I’ve been looking for another one to dip my toes into, but tbh, a LOT of podcasts have the same episode ideas. I can only listen to the history of Boston Mollasses Massacre, the Emu War, Mansa Musa, the Christmas Truce, or the Donner Party so many times (1-2 times per topic). Sadly I live in a country where reading books is not allowed in schools (crazy ikr?) so I never sadly read books inside of school and I stopped over two years ago in general wether outside of inside school grounds, now I just finished highschool and I’m doing a gap year to read books as books are my passion

While I lived as an expat in that country, I had my family back home in the states read books in schools and they would lend me books to read every time I was in the states for summer vacation or winter break, so I have read some books and the one that stuck to me was Anne Frank, a week ago I have reread Anne Frank and I’m really drawn by Anne’s writing and her life as she lives mid genocide as a Jewish 15 year old, that book has really changed my views on certain topics and it will be forever one of my favorite books.

Lately I’ve been pretty drained after work and I just want a game to chill out with. I used to play a lot of competitive shooters and tough roguelikes, but right now I don’t have the mental energy for high-stress gameplay or fast reactions.

I’m looking for something where I can go at my own pace without any annoying timers, survival meters that drain every 2 minutes, or punishing death mechanics.

I’ve already played and really loved Stardew Valley, Dave the Diver, and Dorfromantik. I don’t mind if it’s a management game, a puzzle game, or an cozy exploration game, as long as it lets me turn my brain off for an hour or two.

First, turn off Change with Buttons in Sounds & Haptics. Otherwise, Shortcuts will get the ringtone volume instead of the media volume. After turning it off, the current volume value retrieved by Shortcuts will be the media volume.

How it works:

When opening an app:
- The automation records the current media volume so it can be restored later.
- It saves the name of the currently opened app.
- It retrieves the saved volume level for the current app from storage and applies it.
When closing an app:
- The automation gets the name of the closed app.
- It saves the volume level adjusted while using the app to storage.
- It restores the media volume level from before the app was opened.

In an effort to better manage a new dietary restriction, I think I accidentally built something many may find helpful.

**The problem it solves**

You’ve got a solid rotation of meals you actually like cooking — the hard part isn’t the recipes, it’s the *deciding*. And even once you’ve decided, you’ve still got to remember every ingredient and add it to your grocery list. This automates both.

**What it actually does**

Two shortcuts, same underlying meal data:
1. Pick my dinner: hits a randomizer, shows you a meal, lets you re-roll as many times as you want before committing, then dumps the ingredients straight into your Reminders grocery list.
2. Dinner Planning: same idea but shows you the full list of meals, you tap the one you want, ingredients go to the grocery list. No randomness, just a menu.
Both pull from the same source so you only maintain your meal list once.

Hey everyone,

A while ago I shared the Lock Screen calendar app I made. It shows my calendar, reminders, and countdowns together, and I’ve been using it every day since.

But I still kept forgetting smaller things.

I’d put something in the Notes app, then completely forget the note existed. And some things are too small for a calendar event or a proper reminder — like something I need to bring tomorrow, a grocery item, or just a random thought I don’t want to lose.

So I added a simple Shortcut.

I run it, type a note, and it shows up on my Lock Screen with everything else. That’s pretty much it.

It’s been surprisingly useful. I don’t have to remember to check another app because the note is already there whenever I pick up my phone.

Now my Lock Screen has my schedule, things I need to do, upcoming dates, and whatever I just typed in.

This podcast is often recommended when people suggest a good podcast to start.  I was doing a search for Josef Fritzl, the Austrian man that locked his daughter in a cellar for 20+ years and had 15 children with her. His name came up in some of the reading I am doing on trauma and captivity, and I wanted a nice overview.  This podcast came up.  I always wanted to give it a try so I made the attempt.

I am not a wilting flower, and my humor tends to be dark; I am seldom offended by anything.  But FFS…these guys were horrible.  They turned such a ghastly and devastating event into a total punchline.  There were more jokes than story narrative.

I think if a different topic, I would probably not be so bothered.  But this topic….for me, rape is never funny.  For these guys, this is all it was about.

Hiiiiii, I’m looking for your favorite books that not a single person you know has ever heard of. I‘m especially interested in smaller/newer authors, or obscure books by otherwise well known authors, etc etc. I just feel like I’ve exhausted so many of the things you can pick up at any ole Barnes and noble and want something that’s completely out of nowhere.

I just really love the indie book stores near me that sell local authors because you can‘t really find those sorts of books anywhere else, but I think they’re just as good if not better than some of the big names.

I very much prefer fantasy, but feel free to suggest any other genres as well, but fantasy, mystery, thriller are my bread and butter :)

Throughout school, I’ve only been good at the sciences and math and English was more of a left out subject because it’s a second language to me, and now that I’m in uni, I feel like I’ve missed out on reading proficiency of over middle school level. When I try to form an opinion that I believe is “deep”, my train of thought and reasoning ends abruptly in the middle, and my arguments mostly sound like unorganised dot points and jargon that end inconclusive. I guess what I’m asking for to put in simple words is just “make me smarter!!!” lol
I’d prefer fictional books that allow me to do this rather than a comprehensive reading guide, I’d rather learn this skill more hands on and in my own manner than following a manual.

I’m done with telling myself I’ll get through my backlog someday. I’m tired of not finishing single-player games because their stories don’t interest me.

I need a forever game. Something I can chip away at each evening after work for the foreseeable future.

I love a grind. I love relatively intricate systems. I love difficulty that can be overcome by investment. Unfortunately, a lot of these “forever” games are games such as WoW - which I used to love, by the way - but as adulthood compounds its responsibilities, I simply cannot commit to the social requirements many of these games require.

Hence my conundrum.

I’m seriously considering OSRS because on paper, it’s the perfect game for me. However, I fear the gameplay might be too point and clicky for me.

I love games that start off feeling pretty normal and then slowly get creepier the further you get into them. Not games that are trying to scare you every five minutes with jumpscares, but ones where you slowly realize something’s really not right.

Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened is probably my favorite example. It starts out as a detective game, then gradually gets more unsettling until it turns into Lovecraftian horror. Dredge was another one I loved. At first it’s just a chill fishing game, but the atmosphere keeps getting weirder and more uneasy the longer you play.

I’m not really looking for games that are horror from the very start. I like when the creepy stuff sneaks up on you and the tension just keeps building.

Any genre is fine. I don’t mind a couple of jumpscares here and there, but I’m not after full-on survival horror. Also not really into card/deck-building games.

I had a random idea and wanted to know if I’m reinventing the wheel.

Capturing things on my iPhone always feels a little repetitive. If it’s an idea, I open Notes. If it’s a task, I open Reminders. If it’s a movie recommendation, I save it somewhere else. It all works, but I feel like there should be a faster and more enjoyable way to capture everything.

I’m thinking of building an iPhone Shortcut that acts as a single “capture anything” entry point.

Turned iOS Shortcuts into a DIY caller ID using OCR and Truecaller

When I switched to iOS from Android, the biggest issue I faced was tracking unknown numbers calling me.

On Android it’s as easy as installing Truecaller and forgetting about it.

On iPhone… not so much. Unless you’re willing to pay 🥲

So I got curious and started digging into how Truecaller works. I reverse engineered some of the Android app’s network requests (for educational purposes btw) and found a few interesting endpoints.

A few days ago I was also exploring iOS Shortcuts. It’s literally programming without code.

Then a random idea came to my mind:

Why don’t I make my own version of Truecaller for iPhone? (obviously using their endpoint lol 😏)

I designed an iOS Shortcut that:

-> Takes a screenshot

-> Extracts text using OCR

-> Parses the phone number using regex

-> Sends the number to a Truecaller endpoint (routed via my own proxy)

-> Gets the caller’s name and shows it in a popup

Simple enough, right?

Wrong.

I then ran into another issue.

A few days ago, I shared a hacky iOS Shortcut I built that takes a screenshot of an incoming call, runs OCR, and pings Truecaller’s API to give me free Caller ID on my iPhone.

My inbox blew up with people asking the exact same question: “Wait, how did you get the Truecaller API endpoint in the first place?”

The short answer: I reverse-engineered their Android app.

The long answer: It was a massive headache. The app uses SSL Pinning and TLS fingerprinting (JA3) to actively block scripts. If you try to catch the traffic with standard Burp Suite or hit the API with normal Python requests, their firewall instantly throws a 429 Too Many Requests error and blocks you.

Here is the TL;DR of how I bypassed it:
1. I dropped standard proxies and used HTTP Toolkit with Frida on a rooted emulator to hook the app’s memory at runtime.
2. This allowed me to intercept the raw API request before the app encrypted it.

I built a live Etsy sales widget for iPhone with Shortcuts and Scriptable

I wanted a quick way to check my Etsy sales without opening the Etsy Seller app, so I built this widget for my iPhone.

It shows:
- today’s revenue and order count
- monthly revenue and order count
- a 31-day revenue chart
- red, amber, and green indicators based on daily revenue
It does not use the Etsy API or any external server.

The workflow is:

Etsy sale email → Gmail forwarding → iCloud Mail → Shortcuts automation → monthly CSV file → Scriptable widget

The automation receives the subject line of each Etsy sale email, extracts the USD amount, and appends it to the CSV file for the current month. The Scriptable script then reads the file, calculates the totals, and displays the results in the widget.

It has been running reliably with real sales.

I use a free tier (quite generous) of a VPN app that doesn’t allow one to choose a preferred country/server for all connections. It just connects to a random country under their list of free servers.

I needed to know what country it connected to without having to go into the app every time.

Unfortunately this Shortcut can’t run automatically because there’s no automation action available for “when VPN connects” or “when network changes” etc

What the shortcut does:
1. It pulls up info from https://ipwho.is (which shows as .json by default)
2. Grabs the following details (ip, city, country and emoji of the country)
3. Shows those details as a silent notification (no vibration nor sound)
P.S: if Apple ever adds an automation action for VPN connection/disconnection, this shortcut would be perfect to use.

My 12 year old has read something like 50 books this year. He’s a fast reader, and loves scary horror type stories, but there’s been nothing in the middle grade books that’s really satisfying him. I gave him Wolf Worm by T Kingfisher and he loved it. Then finally, after much interest from him and much research from me, I gave him The Institute by Stephen King. He said it was his favourite book he’s ever read. Still didn’t scare him at all though.

Since then we have been on the hunt for more adult level books for him, maybe similar to The Institute or even grim dark fantasy. It’s been difficult because so many of Stephen King books have really problematic content or things that are way too mature for him. I do plan on getting the other T Kingfisher horror books for him, but I would like to find longer books that he can’t read in two days. The Institute took him a week and that was much better since he wasn’t needing new books immediately after finding one!

As title suggests, looking for open world games that feel alive and has activities to do, you can interact with NPCs and do stuff that are not related to just doing main story.

Recently finished CP2077 and the world, as pretty as it was, felt empty of any interaction or activity. NPCs are just there to fill the space rather than fill it with life, if you know what I mean.

EDIT: I want to thank everyone for suggestions and especially people who recommended KCD. I went ahead and tried KCD 1 and as janky as it still feels with regards to combat, the story and the setting and the lively world is captivating. I’ve been into it for 10 hours and this is the one I’m gonna see through to the end I feel.

And if anyone was ever on the fence to try it, I definitely recommend it. Lots to do, pretty fun and feels like medieval sim. Not perfect and pretty slow game, but for 6 eur, worth every penny.

Imagine your typical RPG. You do your starting quests, finish the tutorial, the usual. Then your character’s village gets attacked by the final boss of the game and you have to fight him, but it’s a scripted loss because you’re not strong enough to beat him. So you keep playing the game, reach the final boss, defeat him, game ends.

Then you start NG+ and you still have all the same stats you had when you beat the game, so when the final boss attacks the village you can defeat him. But because this pivotal character is no longer around, the story can’t progress the same way it did originally, so things have to drastically change.

Do you know of any games that are like that?

(It doesn’t have to be an RPG, that was just an example.)

I mostly play multiplayer games solo.

Not because I want to team up. Because I love what other players add to the world. Dynamic economies, people doing their own thing, and a world that feels alive instead of revolving around me. Real players make the best NPCs. I also love the emergent gameplay that comes from systems interacting in ways the developers didn’t explicitly script.

But between cheating and RMT, multiplayer games eventually get pretty demoralizing.

What are the best single player games that simulate a living world well enough that you don’t miss other players?

I’ve got STALKER (A-Life) and Kenshi on my list. What else should I check out?

Looking for a game where you slowly learn bits and pieces about the world until you get hit with a truth nuke that recontextualizes everything. Like Horizon Zero Dawn and Outer Wilds (or Attack On Titan and Mistborn, for examples from other mediums). I find this style of worldbuilding insanely satisfying when it’s done well.

I got tired of not having clipboard history on iPhone… so I built one with Shortcuts 😂📋

After switching from Android, one feature I missed way more than I expected was clipboard history.
So… instead of complaining about it, I spent way too much time wrestling with Shortcuts and ended up building my own. 😅

What it does:

👆 Double Back Tap saves whatever is currently on the clipboard.

📄 Appends it to a Clipboard.txt file in iCloud Drive.

📋 A second shortcut lets me browse my clipboard history and copy any previous item back.

🌅 A daily automation clears the history every morning at 6 AM, so it’s always just today’s clipboard.

I know it isn’t as seamless as Android since iOS doesn’t allow automations to trigger when the clipboard changes, but it’s been surprisingly useful so far.

I’ve shared all the shortcuts below if anyone wants to try them or improve them:

To refresh the dashboard, press and hold the highlighted “Refresh” text, tap Copy, then close the Dashboard. The shortcut will detect the copied “Refresh” command and automatically reload the dashboard.

• Added a refresh update indicator when refreshing the dashboard.

It works like a charm. the shortcut is triggered by an NFC tag on my headboard. It gets the next 3 calendar events and lets you choose which event to wake up for.

(Great for college students who don’t always attend club meetings or classes)

Then it gives a list of options for morning prep and calculates and sets an alarm based on your selections. simple and very customizable and saves me from doing math right before bed which was the goal

Someone here made a post recommending “What to Carry, What to Burn” recently so I checked it out, and it is SO GOOD. I wish there were more episodes, but it’s brand new.

The host tells real historical stories of people who survived harrowing situations (shipwrecks, stranded in the Arctic, etc). She does such a good job making the story engaging and tells it so well that even though I know the protagonist survives (because that’s the whole point), I’m still on the edge of my seat wondering how they could possibly.

If you like historical podcasts, or non-fiction stories in general, with happy endings (at least for the protagonist), definitely check it out.

Over the years I have gone from being a big podcast person, mostly listening to true crime and audio drama style series, to barely listening to any and finding it hard to find time. I’ve noticed I’ve traded a lot of the fiction and dramatic twists and turns that was really fun to hear about for boring work and mundane things. Recently though, a friend of mine recommended a podcast hosted by a guy in my field of work (therapist) and it greatly changed parts of my life and has led to some other shows I’ve become a fan of.

The podcast is The Absurd World and focuses on existentialism and how to use this philosophy to think about daily life and the world in new ways and how to seemingly get the most out of a world that seems so absurd at times. It’s funny, not gimmicky, and just feels like getting through life with someone like minded one episode at a time. I’ve since also listened to the Daily Stoic which I enjoy in different ways, but I haven’t tried any of that hosts books yet.

How to Take Over the World has been my top podcast for a year or so on Spotify. I was very shocked and saddened to hear that the host, Ben Wilson, announced on the pod a few days ago that he has been diagnosed with Stage IV High Grade Neuroendocrine cancer. It is very serious and his doctors give him a year to live, although he is hoping that some experimental treatments will come through.

He has a GoFundMe for his medical expenses if anyone feels compelled to donate. I won’t link it here, but you can easily find it.

It was a real gut punch to hear. Ben is a great guy with four kids and a loving wife, and he puts on a great podcast. I’m sure he’d appreciate all the prayers if you’re the praying type, or good vibes and thought if you aren’t.

It’s definitely easier for storytelling (and game-making) purposes to a show a society in decline. Skyrim and its crumbling halls, Witcher 3 and, well, its society of Witchers, once well-respected, but when we meet them, they’re in decline and viewed with suspicion. Star Wars (post Endor); even a lot of space games fall prey to this cliche. And it’s not a bad thing, but I’m explicitly looking for something more like The Old Republic MMO, where it’s explicitly during the height of an empire’s or society’s power, the cities are gilded and glittering, people are in paradise; the world may be a “World of Adventure™” where lots of exciting things happen, but the world itself is still lively and stable, more or less. Hell, even Baldur’s Gate 3, which would be something that almost fits this idea, doesn’t quite - cuz things like the Rosymorn Monastery are in disrepair, having been taken over by Kobolds.

I’ve realized I absolutely love the vibe of Hardcore WoW. Despite the name, it’s one of the best “dad games” I’ve played. I can hop on for 30–60 minutes, make a little progress, and log off feeling like I accomplished something. Want to see if there are games with a similar vibe.

The things I’m looking for are:

A huge world that feels alive and creates natural stories. For example, my gear breaking in a dangerous zone and having to limp back to town became its own little adventure.

Hundreds (or ideally thousands) of hours of content.

Traditional RPG character creation (race + class), or a large roster of unique characters to choose from.

Meaningful character progression that keeps you working toward something.

Primarily a solo experience. I’m happy to group up occasionally, but I mostly enjoy throwing on some lofi music and slowly grinding away by myself.

After coming off of Elden Ring and Sekiro I’m absolutely exhausted, combined with mental health struggles, even playing Ocarina of Time just gets annyoing when I have to run around for 40 minutes not knowing where to go. (Really, frick that Darunia guy and his room)

Are there any games where none of that happens? Where I never get lost, I never have to struggle with puzzles or exploration or bosses or dying over and over or any of that; just an absolute joy of a game that you can escape into when you’re absolutely finished?

I’m 25 and I’ve been gaming for as long as I can remember (with some breaks here and there). The problem is that for the past year or so, almost every game I start ends up boring me really quickly. It’s not that I need a break from gamingg, I already took long breaks before, and it didn’t really change anything.

Nowadays I’ll get excited to try a new game, play for an hour or two, and then completely lose the motivation to continue. I just end up closing it and never coming back.

I know what I like, but it’s becoming harder and harder to find something that really grabs me.

Hey everyone,

Some of you might remember my lock screen calendar post a while back — I’m the iOS dev who started building his own apps after having a kid. Well, the kid kept handing me new problems to solve.

After becoming a parent, money started leaking from everywhere. Diapers, random late-night Amazon orders, and somehow a dozen subscriptions I don’t even remember signing up for. I seriously thought my wallet had a hole in it.

I tried keeping a budget, but typing in every expense by hand lasted about three days.

Then I noticed Shortcuts automations can trigger when a message arrives, and that was the idea. My bank already texts me every time I pay — why am I typing the same thing into an app again?

So I made it. When a purchase text comes in, an automation catches it, and AI parses the merchant, amount and category and logs it. Zero typing.

A few things about it:

So here’s the situation: I’m on a flight, no wifi, phone at 80%, and no in-flight entertainment system.

After I landed, I said no more. A few days later, I had Spike Sprint — “a poorly coded pixel runner” (that’s the actual tagline, I’m not being modest, I’m being accurate).

The best part: I turned it into an iOS Shortcut that runs the whole thing locally in Safari with zero network connection. So now, the next time I’m stuck on a flight with no wifi, I can just be running from a barrel.

I’ve pretty much spent all of the last few weeks making my way through all of the Fall of Civilizations podcast by Paul Cooper. I can’t overstate how impressive and incredibly crafted of an experience it is. As a history buff, I’ve listened to a lot of the big history pods out there, like Hardcore History, Tides of History, Rest is History etc. but for my money, I think FoC really is the gold standard.

What elevates it to the top for me is not just the actual historical information and content - which is amazing on its own - but Paul Cooper’s storytelling ability. The guy knows how to weave a compelling narrative. It’s not just a dry recitation of facts - each episode feels like you’re being immersed in a high-quality Hollywood production, or a big-budget HBO miniseries, with fascinating characters, events, digressions into side stories and a very clear sense of a beginning, rising and climax/epilogue of a story. It’s been a really long time since a podcast absolutely rocked my brain like this and I’d love to discuss if anyone is game. I do not follow any organized religion and am inherently skeptical of them, but I am spiritual in the sense that I believe there is a very real but just about intangible connectedness to ***all of this.***

That said, I know some out there, like me, wake up almost everyday and look around and feel that we simply should not be living like this (not just the national and global conflicts, economic and political structures, etc.; though it’s all connected, but also work and the culture around it, the dehumanization and depersonalization that has become routine, the obsession with material things, celebrity culture, the flood of constant information… ).

This episode of Hidden Brain does an awesome job of blending science with innate spiritual awareness and it really made me think about where/when I feel most connected to my own spiritualism …

I hadn’t really listened to podcasts for almost a year. I just lost the desire, and nothing I came across was interesting enough to pull me back in.

A few days ago, though, I stumbled upon Hunting the Suicide Salesman. I had already listened to the first season, Hunting Warhead, which is still one of, if not the best podcast I’ve ever listen to. So I had to give season two a try, and it didn’t disappoint.

That sent me down the rabbit hole again.
Next, I listened to Adults in the Room, which I really enjoyed, followed by Love Trap, which was a solid listen and kept me wanting more.

Today I finished Sea of Lies, It instantly became one of my all time favorites. I genuinely couldn’t stop listening.

It’s great to be excited about podcasts again.

I generally enjoy Today Explained, but caught an error recently that is dismaying. The first 23 seconds of “The World Cup is Healing Us” mispronounces Cape Verde/Cabo Verde as Cape Verd, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo as “Doctor Congo”, which suggests that the intro might be using AI voice likeness of the hosts. He has always been a very selective reader. He has never really found a book he has loved. We spent over an hour at the library and he finally wound up with:

There’s a specific feeling I’m chasing and I’m not sure what to call it exactly, but it’s when a game plays like a completely different game depending on whether you’re a newer player or someone who’s mastered it (or just grinded enough to hit a certain power threshold). I’m not talking about Newgame+ or unlocking new abilities, prestige etc.. I’m talking about the gameplay itself changing completely based on your skill level.

ARPGs are probably one of the best examples of this. A new player is carefully fighting packs of 3-4 monsters, times his abilities and aims them and actually looks at most of the loot that drops. An endgame player with a fully built character is deleting entire screens of enemies every 0.2 seconds and the game has become more about loot filtering and map investment strategy than actual combat. When my battery is really low, I often wish low power mode went a bit further. So I did it myself! I think the results look very Apple-like / official. Here’s how I did it and what it does:

What it does:
- Enables low power mode
- Enables reduce transparency
- Enables reduce white point
- Enables reduce motion
- Disables Bluetooth
- Disables True Tone
- Disables AirDrop
- If on iPhone, automatically drops 5G to 4G
- Fully reverses all of the above upon turning off
- Customisable! Add or remove features you want

How to set it up:
1. Create a focus mode called Energy Saving.
2. Add the “Low power mode” and “Appearance” focus filters to On and Dark respectively.
3. Make a new all-black wallpaper and link it to the Energy Saving focus. You can optionally make all your icons black / tinted too!

I put this together based on a similar idea. The idea being your phone should automatically notify you if it gets stolen or found.

When it is plugged into power it checks to see if it is on your home network. If it is, nothing happens. If it isn’t on the home network or WiFi is off, then it takes a photo and emails that photo along with the location of the phone.

It may not be all that practical but it was fun figuring out how to make it work.

I enjoy consuming content about fitness and healthy living in general. It helps me stay motivated, it gives me ideas what to improve and it gives me a sense of community to listen to other people nerd out about my interests.

However, so much about fitness and self-improvement content has been infected by harmful ideas like red pill, tech broness, hustle culture and other bullshit that doesn’t benefit anyone but its peddler. I’m currently listening to a podcast called Love Trapped and I’m on episode 6 right now.
First of all, please don’t spoil anything in the comments. I went into this story knowing absolutely nothing, and I’d like to keep it that way.
Overall, I’m really enjoying it and I’d definitely recommend it. The story is engaging enough that I keep coming back for the next episode. However, the one thing that’s making the experience less enjoyable for me is the amount of ads.
I completely understand that ads help support the creators, and I have no problem with podcasts running advertisements. But in this case, it honestly feels like a bit too much. If I’m sitting down and listening, I can skip them, but most of the time I’m listening while driving and don’t have my hands free to constantly skip ahead. It gets frustrating when the flow of the story is interrupted so often.
There have been several moments where I’ve found myself tempted to stop listening altogether and just look up what happened …

My spunky, talkative, magical friend has decided to stop fighting her cancer after months of setbacks and recommendations from her doctors not going as planned. She’s chosen to rest in hospice, and I understand, and I am devastated.

She is having trouble reading due to her medications, and being in pain while holding her head up. I mentioned audiobooks to her today and she lit up. I told her I’d come back tomorrow and set her up on Audible.

Somewhere in the story there’s a friendship between two women that’s doing more emotional work than the marriage, the affair, or the romantic plot the book is technically about. Played Dispatch recently and had a blast (never started second playthrough instantly after the first one). Swearing makes characters believable and relatable in some sense, nudity and sex isn’t abused to gain attention but for humor or to highlight a feeling.

I’m a new gamer looking for recommendations.

I played PC games as a kid (Mario, Aladdin, Wolfenstein, The Sims, etc.) but then didn’t play anything for about 20 years. I got back into gaming Feb of this year, so this is my first Steam Summer Sale and I think I’m going overboard.

I’ve missed almost every major franchise from the last two decades, so this sale is kind of to dip my toes into different genres and styles and get a feel for what I might enjoy.

Hi there - I have a couple of lockscreen items where the action is set to ‘Show Folder’ of shortcuts and these show up in a nice view at the top of the screen - image attached. This time I want to show you a Shortcut that lets you add a schedule, a to-do, or a habit just as easily from the lock screen.

I’m an iOS dev and a dad of 11 years (well, 11 years as a dev — the dad part is what changed everything). With a kid in my arms, I just never had the time to unlock my phone, open an app, and tap through to add an event or a task. So I built this.

You add the Shortcut to your lock screen, then either type it out or say it with your voice, and the event/to-do gets added right away — and your wallpaper updates with it.

Honestly this is what let me register stuff instantly while parenting and never forget a single thing. My wife is a lot happier now.

I’m (always) looking for podcast recommendations, but I’ve realised over the years that my taste is… annoyingly specific, so I thought I’d try describing it properly here.

I’ve been listening to podcasts since around 2012, back when podcasting didn’t really feel like the huge industry it is today. I’ve listened to literally every episode of This American Life, and like many people, Serial completely changed the way I thought about what audio storytelling could do.

Since then, I’ve listened to a huge amount of narrative and investigative podcasts, and I’ve realised that what I’m looking for is not necessarily true crime itself.

What I love most are long-form investigative stories where you can genuinely feel the journalist’s involvement in the reporting process.

I’m especially drawn to podcasts where the reporting itself becomes part of the narrative — where you can hear the journalist thinking through contradictions, changing their mind, chasing leads, building relationships with …

I just finished listening to Your Own Backyard (big recommend) and it’s left me searching for other true crime podcasts of a similar feel.

I felt deeply impacted by the profound love and respect the podcast had of the missing victim, bringing her story to life and going into deep detail about her life, her loved ones, and her community and how deeply people loved her.

I try to be really intentional about the true crime I digest, I am not interested in sensationalized podcasts that are doing their research for their own personal benefit. I am not interested in casual “cocktail scary story time”, I want to be able to envision the victim and their life and respect given to the person and their loved ones over the tragedies that have happened. I want to remember these people and their lives, even if I did not know them. I want to know them, miss them, and remember them, if that makes sense.

I often find myself mimicking the behavior of people I’m around for a long time, including podcast hosts. Knowing this about myself and wanting to improve, I think listening to a podcast with a really friendly and lovable personality at the forefront would help me behave more like the person I want to be. I’d like to be someone welcoming that anyone feels like they can open up to, while also being interesting to listen to. Just a generally nice person.

Maybe the podcast host someone who frequently does interviews (although that doesn’t have to be their main thing, or a thing at all, as I’d like to listen to banter among people who are familiar with one another, too). Could be any gender, idc.

I love history and learning about stuff like MK Ultra or the Tuskegee Incident or other weird government stuff, HOWEVER, I am not a fan of wild conspiracy theories like a new world order or lizard people or alien mind control. I think there’s enough shit governments have done without insane conspiracies.

Things like SNAFU: Medburg kinda helped scratch that itch, or Behind The Bastards episodes about certain people. But does anyone have any dedicated podcasts about stuff like this that doesn’t reach into heavy conspiracy theory?

I’ve been having a lot of fun reading books where the narrator is entirely unlikable, unreliable, and rather sneaky. The last 3 books that I’ve read (that fit this bill) are Yellowface, Yesteryear, and The Silent Patient. Not all *great* books, but I had a great time stunned at the audacity of the narrators.

I’m currently about to finish reading Demon Copperhead. I’m generally a sci-fi or fantasy guy who steers clear of reading about real-world troubles, so just reading the book description did absolutely nothing for me. Still, I figured I’d give it a try since it gets recommended so often. I’m blown away with how much I’m loving it and how well-written all of the characters are.

So, what book gave you this experience, of not having any interest due to the description, genre, or something else, but you absolutely loved it and understood why it gets recommended so often once you gave it a read? I’ve tagged classics on here, but it doesn’t need to be something that is widely considered a classic by the average literature snob. This isn’t a “this book is a modern-day classic” discussion though, so I do ask that the books are from the early 2000s and older-ish.

I’m also aware that the reading lists/curriculum varied based on location, time, whether the person was in honors classes, and so on, so there’s a chance someone will say something that was part of someone else’s homework. That’s perfectly fine with me.

What I’m expecting from this (just because someone always asks) is probably mostly books from POC or books that made it to a banned list before they could make it into the schools. Due to it being a reference to school curriculum I imagine this list will consist of more literary or historical fiction, though truly I’d imagine only romance is off the table entirely.

And I don’t mean that she’s a mother who is trying her best in difficult circumstances but fails sometimes. I don’t mean a mother who is a terrible person but will ultimately always be there for her children.

I mean a protagonist who is actually a terrible mother, explicitly written as such. It can be for any number of reasons: her own traumas, being made to have children despite not wanting them, anything really. It doesn’t even have to be the focus of the story, just one aspect of it.

I came to the realization recently that one characteristic we absolutely refuse to accept in fictional women is the sin of being a bad mother. So, I am curious if there are any stories that dare to present the reader with such a thing.

I’m looking for a game that will basically consume every waking hour I have for the next few months and I want to feel GOOD about it afterward. Just that deep satisfaction of experiencing a well made game that rewards your time investment.

ARPGs used to be that thing for me. I put like 800 or so hours into Path of Exile across a few leagues and like another 600 into Last Epoch and there’s nothing quite like opening your character screen after weeks of grinding and just… staring at your build. Everything skilled perfectly, every slot farmed to near perfection, your character is a majestic juggernaut… that feeling is unmatched.

Same with WoW back when I played it, log off after a raid night and your characters would all be standing there in full tier gear looking like absolute units and it felt like you’d actually accomplished something reven though objectively you were just clicking at best a 3-4 button rotation for a couple of hours.

This is a little specific so let me explain. I love the idea of having an open world game that features a big, super important, landmark to go to. Ideally at any time, as long as you work toward it. And if there was some sort of mystery to what it is and why it’s important, that would be perfect. Let me list some examples of what I’m talking about.

Elden Ring. There’s the Erdtree. It’s always there, no one ever shuts up about it, and getting there feels majestic.

Breath of the Wild. Hyrule Castle. It’s your end goal and ground zero of all the terrible things around, and guarded by terrifying piano robots.

Fallout: New Vegas. There’s two, actually. New Vegas itself and Hoover Dam. Standing at New Vegas feels like being at the center of the world, and everyone talks about how important Hoover Dam is, everything builds up to that.

My brain is terrible at remembering irregular timelines. I could never remember when I last changed the AC filter, when I last gave the dog her flea pill, or when I last descaled the coffee machine.

I tried standard habit trackers, but they all want you to do things every single day. If you don’t, you break the streak. I just needed a simple system to tell me exactly how many days it had been since I last did a specific chore.

So, I built a completely hands-free tracking system.

Here is the setup:
- I bought a pack of cheap, blank NFC stickers off Amazon.
- I placed them strategically around the house: one inside the air filter grate, one on the dog’s medicine bottle, one on the watering can.
- I set up Apple Shortcuts to trigger a log whenever I tap my phone to a specific tag.
The missing piece was where to actually store this data. Apple Reminders is built for future to-dos, not past logs. A spreadsheet was too clunky.

I’ve been an iOS dev for about 11 years, but the thing that actually made me build my own app was having a kid.

When you’re holding a baby you never really have a free hand. Opening the calendar, tapping into the right day, checking what’s next… it was just too much for something I do 20 times a day. I kept thinking I just want to look at my phone and already see it.

Then I noticed iOS lets you change your wallpaper automatically with Shortcuts, and that was the idea. Put my schedule and to-dos straight on the lock screen so it’s always there.
So I made it. I think it was actually the first lock screen calendar app like this, and it somehow got to #3 overall on the Korean App Store.

A few things about it:
Customization: you can change the colors, fonts and use your own photo.
Natural language: you can just type “lunch with mom tomorrow at 1” and it makes the event.

I recently attended an event where one of my favorite podcasts were at. It was a several day event, I saw both hosts hanging out or walking around a bunch of times during this event. I feel like every single new show that launches lately is just two people sitting in a studio with high-end mics for three hours. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good deep dive, but I’ve noticed a massive shift where even niche topics are being stretched out to fill airtime. It feels like the ‘edutainment’ style is being replaced by just letting people ramble without an editor. I miss the days when shows had a tighter structure or a specific hook that didn’t require a massive time commitment just to get to the point. Like a decade ago I found a podcast called the bittersweet life. It’s about 2 Americans. One living in Seattle and another as an expat in Rome. They met as schoolgirls on the bus in middle school 3-4 decades ago. Listening to them is like flipping through a magazine—it’s definitely not a lecture on a very narrow topic. It’s chatting. But they are often very good at finding light, fun, interesting and uplifting topics to discuss. That’s what makes me think the podcast is golden. Before them I just was never into podcasts because they seemed overly critical and serious and didn’t have enough humor to them. The bittersweet life podcast is brilliant because it makes you appreciate things that you don’t always remember are great. The podcast started in 2014. It’s been a long journey but their episodes just fly by for me. Does anyone have a podcast that feels like this for them?

I love it when I read a nonfiction book that fills me with facts that I absolutely need to tell everyone I know immediately!!

My favourite books in that category are:

Women’s Work by Elizabeth Wayland Barber (about the history of textiles!!). A bit academic, but I have somewhat of a special interest in textile history so this book is so important to me!

Don’t Sleep, There Are Snakes by Daniel Everett (about the Pirahã people of the Amazon and their absolutely fascinating language and culture). Was made to read this by a friend who read it and could not shut up about it and they were absolutely correct.

I am partial to anthropology but open to other suggestions!

I’m not at all interested in self-help-ish pop psychology or anything businessy in any capacity, but I’m super down to read anything else.

What was the last nonfiction you read that you could not shut up about?
I just finished John Green's "Everything is Tuberculosis." I really enjoyed this but I haven't read a book like this before. Any suggestions to add to my library?

Okay first of all, I genuinely enjoyed reading this book. I’m currently an EMT, a caregiver, and I’m working on getting a nursing license so I picked this book up to expand my knowledge in medical literature. I’m not the biggest fan of John Green but I truly adored this book. I loved the history, the story of Henry and the pathology of TB that John Green described. However, this is not a genre I’m familiar with. I usually read horror, thriller, and mystery. After reading this book, it has become apparent to me that I need to know more about the history of disease and how it *really* affects people. When I was a teen, I played Maplestory and loved to take Thief as my class, so I could go invisible and go places that were WOEFULLY overleveled for myself. Knowing I could be surrounded by instant death but being safe was weirdly really reassuring?? It’s probably the same part of my brain that loves when it rains, knowing I’m warm and dry inside.

This is not about games that failed to deliver, but about games you felt delivered so well that you expected other games to follow suit, but ended up not doing so. I’m looking for would-be trend setters that didn’t gain the attention or recognition you believe they deserve, and I’d love to hear the reasons you think they stand out.

My personal choice is Supreme Commander. I’d played the Total Annihilation games it was a spiritual successor to, but even compared to them the level of strategic depth available in SupCom was almost unprecedented. While I didn’t expect the likes of StarCraft or Command and Conquer to change their gameplay, I fully expected a wave of SupCom clones that never came and apart from a couple fairly recent indie titles I haven’t found a strategy game that quite compares.

A Shooter That Really Uses Machine Guns For Their Intended Purpose?

I was playing Fallout New Vegas and was really enjoying myself. Had a crit build with a gatling laser and was watching enemies explode into dust with a quick burst from a mile away. Then it kind of hit me: THIS is what these heavy machine weapons are for. But in almost all the shooters I’ve played, the heavy weapons are meant for heavy armored slow characters who wander straight into battle, acting as living tanks. That’s not right! A machine gun fills the role they usually give to sniper rifles, medium to long range combat. They fire high caliber rounds, sometimes even the exact same bullet, but instead of worrying about accuracy they have a high fire rate.

So I ask, are there any shooters where the heavy weapons actually feel good to use from a distance? No dramatic reduction at range, no piss-poor damage that causes every single fight to cost hundreds of rounds, just something where I can find a good vantage point and make things explode with a minigun or LMG that …

The one two punch of bringing automation triggers inside the shortcuts editor and having notifications trigger shortcuts is huge.

Specifically this enables three longstanding desires from the shortcuts community.
1. Run a shortcut every X minutes throughout the day
2. Schedule a shortcut from shortcuts to run later
3. Share Automations
In the images I’ve attached you can see that the proof of concept shortcut I made, has run 2867 times all on its own.

this loop has been running now for over 2 days, and as far as I can tell, little to no impact on battery life.

This test shortcut also makes use of the native ability to store data, which allows the shortcut to show a custom message the very first time it runs, and then keep track of the amount of times it’s run so far.

I also include the notification settings screen to indicate that it will be possible for all of this to happen nearly invisibly, this long running notification test loop runs silently and without any visual interference. …

iOS 27 finally solved the main issue with Apple automation by adding the “On Notification” trigger.

Historically, scheduling a shortcut to run at a dynamically calculated time in the future (e.g., “run this task exactly 45 minutes from now”) was incredibly difficult. It usually required clunky workarounds like cluttering your Calendar or using a ⁠Wait⁠ action that would inevitably time out in the background.

By combining the new “On Notification” trigger with a third-party helper app (like Actions), we can now reliably schedule background tasks.

How it works:
1. You use a helper app (like Actions) to schedule a local notification to appear at a specific calculated date/time — you can make actions schedule a notification from Shortcuts itself.
2. You set up a Personal Automation in iOS using the new On Notification trigger, set to watch for that specific notification.
