Okay so i never actually played D&D, I do enjoy the lore though and the Baldur’s Gate 3 game, I’m also a big fan of fantasy in general and this movie made me so happy!
The landscapes, the practical affects, the characters, the humor, and the story.
Overall it was just fun.
Didn’t take it self too seriously but still respected the source material.
Gives me hope for future fantasy movies adaptations!
I would love to see a Dragon Age movie one day 😭
I highly recommend it if you are a fan of fantasy!
I don’t necessarily agree that the party needs to use every single packed item that they mention like it’s a James Bond movie, but it just bothers me like crazy when they have this great setup for a long journey and it’s dashed almost immediately
Does anyone else find themselves doing mental gymnastics to figure out what books people are talking about when they abbreviate the titles? (Particularly in online settings like Reddit)
Like, I love the Cosmere books, but if someone says they “just finished WoR” or “have a question about THoA”, or “wonder if there’s a connection between WoR and WoA”… I spend way more time figuring out what book they’re referring to than it would have taken to just type the title… lol
It doesn’t help that so many fantasy titles follow the pattern: [The/A] [noun] of [noun]”. WoT, EotW, WoK, WoR, RoW, WoA, AoL, HoA, MBotF…
Not a complaint, just curious if anyone else struggles as much with this as I do 😂
EDIT - Several people were annoyed that I used all the abbreviations I was criticizing in this post, but that was the point 😜
But for reference: WoR - Words of Radiance THoA - The Hero of Ages WoA - Well of Ascension WoT - Wheel of Time EotW - Eye of the World WoK - (The) Way of Kings RoW - Rhythm of …
I just finished the fifth season by N.K. Jemisin. The tone and the world totally blew me away. It’s grimdark in a whole other diaspora. The whole world is Afrocentric, the beauty standards and the power structures are based from a totally different viewpoint than other books I’ve read. I think I might have to read it again before moving onto the next book in the series. It tilts fantasy on its head and doesn’t hold your hand when it comes to explaining the world. You have to figure it out for yourself with context clues. What a commentary on our society. I am totally thrown.
As a Brazilian, I’m gutted that amazon is closing Book Depository. They’ve frozen shipping to Brazil mid-covid, but I had hopes that would soon start shipping to us once again, once our Internal Revenue stops to fuck around with intenational purchases.
BUT… all my Expanse books, all my Chine Mieville, Hiperion duo, Cloud Atlas, Malazan book of the fallen… they all reached me via Book Depository, very low prices and free world wide shipping. The custom was a plus, very nice and fast to answer. They also had some really good board games in there.
RIP to you, book depository. You even had better prices than some ebooks in brazilian amazon. You open the gates to my SFF reading and you’ll be missed.
It’s been a while since we’ve had a thread like this, so I decided to start another one. What are some books that you like or even love that don’t get talked about very much on this subreddit? Maybe it’s because they’re new, maybe it’s because they’re obscure, or maybe it’s just because they’re not Blindsight ;). Whatever the case, I want to hear about it! These threads are always great for discovering new titles.
Give us the title and one or two sentences of what you liked about it.
Edit: I absolutely love all the books that are getting recommended here. Thank you so much everyone, and keep those deep cuts coming!
Does anyone get the feeling Adrian Tchaikovsky is going to be a towering figures in SF in 10 or 15 years, after we have had time to real all his bloody books ;)
… and dear lord what a ride it was. i absolutely enjoyed every single aspect of that book, including the abrupt ending
!i at least expected to see purslane emerging from her hesperus sarcophagus..!<
This is exactly the kind of sci-fi i adore, (>!stories spanning billions of years and through galaxies and such!<) so do you know of books similar to this one? for context, i alread read most of Reynolds works, Adrian Tchaikovsky books, Three body trilogy, as these are some of the similar books that come to mind.
Thanks!
I’m interested in diving into trilogies or series that have a satisfying ending. Got any recommendations?
Are there good SF books about/involving corporate espionage that you can recommend?
