They are nothing alike. The only thing they really share is the sub genre grimdark and multi pov.
I love GoT and started first law because someone said this. I finished the blade itself and was like “that sucked”.
It took me like halfway through the second book to realize; this is nothing like GoT but it is still good.
I feel like we are doing a disservice to first law whenever this happens. Or at least if you are going to recommend it be very specific about what exactly is like GoT. Expecting a giant fantasy/political world is really gonna give someone stepping into first law the wrong impressions.
I know it’s hard because when you think about it GoT is pretty singular but we gotta do better.
Edit: and just do people don’t come at me with “ what would you choose” Tigana. That’s my choice. Maybe some other guy Gabriel Kay as well.
Edit 2: Looking at the replies it really feels like people don’t take into account tone, depth, or …
Piggybacking off another recent question about those that got progressively worse - it’s given me a good list to avoid - but what series got better as it went on? As if my reading list wasn’t already insanely long!
I am reading a series right now that I fell in love with on the first book. I couldn’t wait for the second book to come out, only to be super disappointed when I finally read it. I held out hope for the 3rd book but it’s even worse.
What series have you read that was good with the first book but then just went downhill and got worse as the series progressed?
Just started a rewatch of the series. I know the books are divisive (I’m in the camp that really liked them but totally understand those who can’t stand them), but the series is really just one of the most well done fantasy shows of all time, IMO. Sometimes I have quibbles with deviations from the source material in adaptations, but this show did it all the right ways. Aging up the characters from rising high school seniors to rising graduate students made so much difference in the tone (even though Quentin still starts out so whiny…just so, so whiny…🤦 😆).
Edited to add: The “Under Pressure” musical number from season 3 is one of my top TV moments of all time.
I’ll go first. There’s a book coming out this month. A debut novel. I don’t know even what it’s about and I have no intention to find out.
I went to university with the author, and I just think he is the worst person in the world. We had the same friend group, but he and I just never got on. Kept civil. Never fought. Never did anything outwardly wrong on me. Just felt the real ‘I don’t like you’ vibe anytime I had to be in his company.
So, I am not going anywhere near it.
I mean books that tend to be more popular with dudes than ladies.
For instance, “Lonesome Dove”.
My dad rec’d it to me, I (male) read it and loved it, and rec’d it to multiple female friends who tell me they didn’t finish. While reading, multiple men on my commute struck up a conversation with me about how much they loved that book.
I think it’s just more popular with guys than gals for whatever reason.
I’ve read embarrassingly few of these titles, just the first foundation book and 2001.
Where should I start? Any must reads in here in your opinion?
There’s some lovely cover art as well and they were obviously part of someone’s beloved collection as each has the name Bryan and the date he purchased the book, the price and the date he read or reread it.
I just got done reading Aurora and I thought the book was a bit disappointing. It did have one thing I liked though, and that is interstellar travel performed at sub-light speeds.
I hate warp drives in science fiction because I don’t think faster than light travel is possible nor will it ever be possible. Even otherwise great science fiction books like Dune I still find a bit irksome when I see civilizations travel many light years in a matter of days or even minutes.
I just don’t think there is any feasible way to do that, not now or ever.
So what I’m looking for is a science fiction story where the spaceships can travel a percentage the speed of light, but can’t exceed it through any kind of Macguffin like element zero from the Mass Effect series.
I’m OK with really high percentages of the speed of light, even like 90 percent as I think that is possible, but I am sick of warp drives in science fiction. They’re just lazy and they downplay the …
Like how season 1 and 4 of Attack on Titan may as well be completely different shows with how wildly the scale of everything has escalated. Or how the Three Body trilogy ends up being way way bigger scale than you could ever have imagined when you start it.
I love seeing the scale just go up and up and up. Like imagine if Trailer Park Boys eventually ended up on the moon. Except for Three Body, I haven’t really encountered anything like this in sci-fi or fantasy, but I’m certain that it’s out there if I can find it.
I hope it’s clear enough what I’m talking about lmao. maybe this sounds incomprehensible but yknow what I mean right?
*EDIT* - Standalone books are fine! I did not mean to make this exclusive to series. Feel free to recommend single books!
Hi all. 117 titles this year. I don’t envy the judges’ job getting through this before the summer when the six nominees are typically announced.
Any shortlist/winner predictions? Favourites from 2023 that made the cut? Infinity Gate and Titanium Noir are the only two I’ve read so far but I’ve already started some heavy wishlisting as this award seems to match up with my tastes far more than others.
I have so much time for these books. That delightful mix of fantasy and sci-fi; the exploration of what it means to be human when some characters are completely virtual, some with multiple bodies; and two fascinating, intertwined stories being told simultaneously.
Is this a hidden gem or am I blind to its flaws?
I love this genre. Films I’ve enjoyed include Spotlight, The Martian, the Bourne films, and Moneyball. There’s just something about characters knowing what they’re doing and making smart decisions that appeals to me. And if that is told in a compelling way, even better.
What are other examples that fit this category?
I can’t believe this cast signed up for this movie. The entire second half of this movie just kept getting worse. The ice skating scene? How was this worse than what I was certain was to be the worst scene in the colored smoke shootout. And both were somehow out done by the scene where she was “activated”. Sam Rockwell couldn’t save this movie. That’s saying something. Don’t watch this. Ever.
