I thought I would never bite the bullet. I thought they weren’t worth it for how short they are (12h is kinda tight for me personally with how much I usually listen to). I also HATE most LITRPG books, cause they usually suck. Also the name and cover are very offputting.
But I couldn’t escape it. Everytime I asked for a suggestion, that stupid series was at the top of the list. Every fucking time, even when I asked specifically not for that series.
So I bit the bullet. I had 6 credits extra cause I stopped listening to audiobooks for a bit and thought “why not, how bad could it go?”.
At first, it was good. Then it was just really good.
Then, near the end of book 2 I decided to listening to it while eating. I’ve only ever done that with 2 other audiobooks in my life: Curse of Chalion and Project Hail Mary. Those are my 2 of my 10 favourite books of all time.
By the time I was halfway through book 3, all my credits were gone.
I am now writing this as I …
I’m looking for a series with OP wizards going all out in huge battlefields, what would be your recommendations?
I have only read 100 pages so far, so maybe it gets better… But what the actual hell is this?
A physically weak girl is pushed into becaming a rider by her mom. Is she stupid, does she want her to die?
So basically these students have to go on a tall bridge and, if they fall off they straight up die, like how is this functional??? This makes no sense
There is also a guy named Jack, who just pushes people off bc its fun. WTF? Whats his motivation, whats the point?
And then the dragons randomly burn people for intimidation? What the hell is going on?
Is this just 800 pages of smut? Violet also thirsts for every guy he sees.. this book is just insanity
This is the only book that I brought on my vacation…
What if there was a prophecy in which that one day, a certain chosen one would finally bring peace and unity to the world…By being evil? Like, There is a war between two Kingdoms that has been happening for many years now. Let’s say the one kingdom is the Kingdom of Humans, and the other the Kingdom of Fairies. One day, a human got bestowed upon the powers of a chosen one but with one major problem and that he is secretly batshit insane, who desires nothing more but gaining more power. Overtime, The Kingdom of Humans starts to notice and realize how fucking crazy he is and how far gone he’s got off and began to seek help from the Kingdom of Fairies. As time goes on, the humans and fairies began to understand more and more about each other and finally set their differences aside and work together to fight against one common enemy being the evil Chosen One. Hence, bringing peace and unity to the kingdoms because of his downfall.
Hello, r/books. I’m SharedHoney and a few years back I posted the “Ultimate 4chan greatest books of all time”, which I was really grateful to find well-appreciated on this sub. What originally fascinated me with these lists is how, despite 4chan’s reputation, whenever their annual book lists come out they are always highly regarded and met, almost universally, with surprised praise. With a few new lists out now, and a round 10 total editions available, I decided to reprise the project to create a “conclusive list”, which I don’t plan to ever update again. Thankfully, this one took just half of the last list’s 40 hours. So… Shall we?

Notes:
And I’m guessing we’ll get the best answers from old redditors on this one.
Theres been huge sensations which are still read today (Hunger Games, White Teeth, The Road, Harry Potter).
But every so often, theres a book that was everywhere for a year or two - and now you see nobody reading and barely a book shop stocking it.
For me its Stieg Larsson’s Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy. Absolutely a top seller for years only for it to fade from every conversation about books and every front of house of a book shop (second hand shops are quite filled with it though). And this all happened in a mere 20 years.
Has an author written a character so completely actualized, with coherent psychology, that you absolutely abhorred the character? As in, you wouldn’t even name your pet or future kids that name, lol.
For me it’s the name Cathy, from John Steinbeck’s East of Eden
… to say she was a morally heinous individual - with utter disregard for the poor souls unlucky enough to get sucked into her volatile magnetic field - would be an understatement.
I can start with Sunshine Patriots by Bill Campbell, kind of cyberpunk-ish MilSF, about a soldier who’s been fighting alien wars his whole life, but now is assigned to put down a rebellion of human miners on a “paradise” planet. Recommended if you like depressing stories about the brutality and horrors of war!
What about you all, what’s a book that you liked that you’ve never seen recommended here, or never had a chance to recommend or mention?
Ed: Thank you so much for all of the recommendations! My to-read list just got quite a bit worse <3
What a delightful and outrageous book! Sparkling with magic and amoral nobles and fantastic plants. Totally my cup of tea. My favourite Jack Vance by far
Like, everything just comes together in a super satisfying way. All the mysteries: solved. All the threads: tied up. You close the book and think: NO NOTES. (Etc.)
I understand that ambiguity is also an authorial choice, and I like Philip K Dick (e.g.) as much as the next person, but right now I’m looking for the opposite of that.
I was born in 71 so perfect age for the first Star Wars movie. But in fourth grade some kid brought a book called Barlowe’s Guide to the Extraterrestrials to school. Probably around 81. I asked for it for Xmas and got it.
I think this book, more than Star Wars even, made me love sf. The range of creatures, the great art, the discussion of their environment, behaviors etc (as if a real wildlife encyclopedia).
Now, there are tons of cool picture books fir the young sf nerd, but in the early 80’s? I feel like this book was bleeding edge for its time. There’s still not quite anything like it. A masterpiece imho that doesn’t get as mich love as it should. Would love to see a guide part 2 again drawing from a range of modern sf books.
It’s been so long since Echopraxia, I hope he doesn’t go George RR Martin on us. 😭
Also, does anyone know when Ted Chiang will release a new story? It’s been almost 5 years.
When I say “Weird Sci Fi” I’m talking about your Dhalgrens, your Annihilations, your Ices, your Solarises, you get the idea.
What are your favorite short science fiction short stories that are weird, strange, bizzare, mindbending trips?
